Journal The Fun Guy's Journal: Lego Robotics 2

The theme of the Lego Robotics competition this year is food safety. All it takes is a quick bit of Googling on "food safety", "technology", "processing", "awesome" and other obvious search terms to make me pop up to fore. In this morning's e.mail, I just got another request to serve as an expert adviser to a group of schoolkids. Given my soft spots for science, engineering and inquisitive kids, how can I say no?

  • I busted out my old Mindstorm kit a bit back. It took a little digging to get the software working on XP but I did it and we had a blast building and programming our little robot. I need to do more of that with them. Sooner or later I'll get around to getting a new kit - though I think that they changed a lot of the hardware. Maybe run the old and new together in tandem.

    • I've never used Lego Mindstorms, but they seem pretty cool. One of the nice things about advising science fair kids or working with teams like this is that they are all there by choice and interest. That preselects for an above average level of enthusiasm. Intelligence is mostly irrelevant, to be honest; it's enthusiasm that drives science forward.

Anyone can make an omelet with eggs. The trick is to make one with none.
