[tt] Poll of the Day - Who do YOU trust more? A Bakers Dozen

tomhudson (43916) writes | more than 2 years ago

It's funny. Laugh. 13

Trust is a funny thing ... takes time to build up, and only a second to destroy. So, in each of these pairs, who do you trust more, and why? I know, some these are like that definition of conflicted feelings - watching your brand new car go over the cliff with your mother-in-law at the wheel ... others are a Hobson's Choice .... but saying "neither" doesn't count.

1. Paypal [we'll hold back whatever we want when we want] or your bank [thanks for the bail-out, suckers]?
2. Facebook [I sell your data and lock you in] or Microsoft [I want your money and lock you in]?
3. Google [I sell your eyeballs and own your data] or Apple [we'll tell you what you want]?
4. Apple or Microsoft?
5. Microsoft or Sony?
6. GM [thanks for the bail-out, suckers] or the governments that bailed them out [thanks for the campaign donations, suckers].
7. The ER doctor you've never met before, or the salesman referred to you by a close friend?
8. The cashier at the store [I just work here], or the owner of the same store [I own the place]?
9. Dog or cat?
10. Skunk or porcupine?
11. Politician or Biker Gang Member? (warning: this is a trick question)
12. The police and the courts or Biker Vigilante Justice? (see, I told you #11 is a trick question).
13. Someone who uses linux or someone who calls it GNU/Linux? (no, Virginia, they are not the same).

1. Bank
After all, if I don't like them, I can switch banks. PayPal is just about a monopoly....
2. Facebook
I don't have a Facebook account, so what they do is irrelevant to my interests.
3. Google
4. Microsoft
5. Microsoft
Apple is the most fascist company in the country. Fuck them.

6. GM
7. ER Doctor
8. Owner
9. Cat
10. Porcupine

your answers weren't amusing this time. not that they were amusing before either. if youre going to try to keep this up you could at least try to be less stale.

1. Bank... because it's not really a bank and didn't get a bailout.
2. Facebook
3. Google
4. Apple, even though my experiences with them are beyond bad, my experiences with Microsoft are simply worse and built up over decades.
5. Sony... If you stay away from their media and their services, they're still decent.
6. governments, because GM is not an option at this side of the pond (Yes, yes, Opel, I know Opel)
7. ER doctor
8. Owner
9. Dog
10. Porcupine
11. Biker Gang Member
12. Biker Vigilante Justice (You know who you messed with and you'll pay the price... Unlike Police/Justice system... you don't know who messes with you and you still might pay the price)
13. Linux

Smokin' poll (1)

plover (150551) | more than 2 years ago | (#39347127)

1. Bank. Mine didn't take any of that money.
2. Microsoft. They aren't trying to steal my habits, just my rights to use my computer.
3. Apple. Google has shattered my trust with google-analytics; they watch every link you click and sell you to the highest bidder; they've shut down the cool free stuff; "sure we'll censor your webz for you China, oh, wait, someone noticed"; "we're not evil except when you're not looking". Apple never had my trust, but they're honest about their walled garden, and they show you the brightly colored shiny giant dildo they're going to screw you with. Fuck Google.
4. Microsoft. They're still more open than Apple. Fuck Apple.
5. Microsoft. Sony lost my trust with their DRM moves with DAT, Minidiscs, ATRAC, Macrovision, etc., etc., etc., all going back to when they bought Columbia. Cap it off with the rootkit CD-ROM installer, and they've been the scummiest company on the earth. Fuck Sony with Apple's giant dildo. Microsoft is trying to steal our computing ability with web services, TPM chips, and locked boot loaders, but I have a choice, and outwitting them isn't particularly difficult. So fuck Microsoft, too.
6. Governments. I haven't owned a GM in 22 years for a reason. But fuck 'em both anyway, just to be sure.
7. The ER doctor. He doesn't know me, but he doesn't have to in order to treat me. I trust the system that allowed him to get in that position. And he has more to answer for if he screws up. Besides, broken people are relatively easy to fix. Someone who takes my money and promises to deliver something, well...
8. Shop owner. He has more to lose if he's a thief.
9. Dog. I trust a cat to do whatever it wants, which seldom coincides with what I want it to do. I trust a dog will do anything for a cookie.
10. Porcupine. No ranged weapons, kind of slow. Skunks are mustelids, fast and vicious, and have that whole distance attack thing going on.
11. Politician. There's a chance that he or she may not yet be corrupt. No chance with the gang member. Xtian "gangs" are a fucking joke, and don't count.
12. Sadly, this is the toughest one. I still have to go with police and courts. At least they tell you Rule #1: shut the hell up, because nothing you can say can help you. Both are likely to mess you up just for the lulz. The cops can certainly make that part worse. The biker gang will eventually go away, assuming you live. But the biker gang can be as capricious as they want. The cops generally aren't.
13. Someone who uses linux. Fuck the pedantically correct.

Re:Smokin' poll (1)

kermidge (2221646) | more than 2 years ago | (#39348975)

Yup, good poll, delightful, twisted, good-humored mind-messing. Was gonna do my own reply, but reading yours, and getting some good laughs in the process, I hope you won't mind if I second it, with a few changes.

3. Google. I know I don't trust them and why, yet still use gmail - they're the only freemail that hasn't shrunk storage, lost stuff, or closed an account for inactivity. Apple to me are like cats - I trust them to be themselves, and I've carried a grudge since idiosyncratic floppy formats and forked file headers. Btw, you may wish to try ghostery for all the tracking stuff.

6. GM - but I agree with the rest. In fairness, they both occasionally do something right. Last car was a Ford, before that a Packard.

10. Was gonna say skunk - I've met a few with no problems except for a dog washing (and getting quills out of my dog's snout was not fun for either of us) and a chewed-on axe handle, but I do like your reasoning.

11 & 12 Tough call, I've had good and bad experiences with both, but I also chose gummint; there is at least the prospect of recall, remediation, due process, etc.

You call that a poll? I call these answers (1)

tqft (619476) | more than 2 years ago | (#39349259)

1. bank - they actually have to comply with the law
2. Microsoft - I know how big a fuck up they can be, facebook has not yet approached maximum fail
3. Google over Apple - google can't be trusted, but is there anything about apple to trust at all?
4. Microsoft over Apple - see 2
5. Microsoft or Sony - see 2
6. GM over governments - GM can be taken down without killing millions
7. ER doctor - tust a salesman you crazy?
8. The cashier at the store [I just work here], or the owner of the same store [I own the place]? cashier
9. Dog or cat? dog
10. Skunk or porcupine? echidna
11. Politician or Biker Gang Member? (warning: this is a trick question), politician
12. The police and the courts or Biker Vigilante Justice? (see, I told you #11 is a trick question)., BVJ
11 & 12 for the same reason - bikies have a code of honour however warped and won't rat you out to the cops for a few votes, serious money maybe, but then the BVJ kicks in
13. Someone who uses linux or someone who calls it GNU/Linux? (no, Virginia, they are not the same). GNU/Linux as they actually know what they are talking about

1. Paypal [we'll hold back whatever we want when we want] or your bank [thanks for the bail-out, suckers]?

Paypal, because they have taken a lot less money from me in the past 7 years.

2. Facebook [I sell your data and lock you in] or Microsoft [I want your money and lock you in]?

Microsoft, because I can more effectively opt out of their services. Facebook has stuff on me even though I'm not a user.

3. Google [I sell your eyeballs and own your data] or Apple [we'll tell you what you want]?

Google, only because they are a bit less cultish.

4. Apple or Microsoft?

Microsoft, again.

5. Microsoft or Sony?

Tragically, still Microsoft.

6. GM [thanks for the bail-out, suckers] or the governments that bailed them out [thanks for the campaign donations, suckers].

GM, only because they are less conservative than the idiots running the government.

7. The ER doctor you've never met before, or the salesman referred to you by a close friend?

ER doctor. I probably don't need the salesman much.

8. The cashier at the store [I just work here], or the owner of the same store [I own the place]?

The cashier, because I've been there.

9. Dog or cat?

The dog - loyalty over arrogance.

10. Skunk or porcupine?

Skunk. They give fair warning before they do something bad to you.

11. Politician or Biker Gang Member? (warning: this is a trick question)

Most of the time, the latter. In rare occasions, the former.

12. The police and the courts or Biker Vigilante Justice? (see, I told you #11 is a trick question).

The former has a poor chance of long term success, the latter even less.

13. Someone who uses linux or someone who calls it GNU/Linux? (no, Virginia, they are not the same).

Linux.

why did you answer twice? (0)

1. A bank - Paypal is bound by .. what law?
2. Microsoft - At least I have the option of escaping, one day
3. Google - Eyes or balls.. I am keeping my balls
4. Microsoft - At least they have the decency to admit their evil
5. Microsoft - There is no trusting Sony. Ever.
6. GM - At least there is a chance that they might be honest, one day
7. ER doctor - Trick question?
8. The cashier at the store - They do their job and that is that, and probably do it well. No ego. Just the job. Great.
9. Cat
10. Porcupine - so cute, so versatile
11. Biker Gang Member - at least you know he will act in his own interest..
12. Biker Vigilante Justice - there is no justice in The Justice System.
13. Linux user

Hmm (1)

Stargoat (658863) | more than 2 years ago | (#39356555)

1. Paypal - Less access to data
2. Facebook - I do not use Facebook
3. Google - Apple are just a bunch of bastards.
4. Microsoft - See Above. Plus Microsoft is much better about fixing security patches.
5. Sony - I don't use Sony for much, if anything. Therefore, I can trust them.
6. GM - I don't drive a GM vehicle. Therefore, I trust them.
7. Depends on the recommendation. Probably the Salesperson.
8. Cashier. Definitely.
9. I will trust that the cat is pointless, but I prefer the dog.
10. Perhaps the skunk. As a member of the Mustelid family, it is intelligent and trainable.
11. Most politicians aren't bad people, but I'll still go with the Biker. I've never been robbed by one.
12. Biker Vigilante Justice. At least I can appeal to my 12 Gauge.
13. I do not trust anyone who uses GNU, Redhat, Debian, or Ubuntu. Mostly, I stopped trusting widely available OSes after IBM Dos 5.1.
