After this article, and this comment, I think I'm going to d/l Blender to my home PC and see what I can do with it.

It is true that the interface is difficult to figure out, I suggest you have the tutorial pages on-hand to figure stuff out, but once you get they keys down its a breeze. I've not done anything super-complex with it, but for a piece of free software I am very impressed. (Not that I've used any other rendering software.)
