This is how bad it is now. At some point a couple months ago, either /. or FF logged me out for some reason, and I literally couldn't be arsed to log back in. I checked in on the FP a few times a week, but it's as bad there as it's ever been. Paid trolls? Check. The first hundred or so comments containing nothing but moldy humour and politically retarded geeks? Check. The other half of the thread containing pointless, nitpicking digressions? Check.

Here's something interesting: According to a recent audit, I am part of the 1%. I'd been suspecting this for a while now, but to have some fussy accountant reveal your worth in 7 specific figures is another thing.

Mind you, that's all paper. Give me 30 days to liquidate, and I doubt I could break 50K. Still, nothing to sneer at, especially in these times.

Then again, contra Churchill, I've only gotten more liberal as I've aged, so I sleep well at night. There's never been, and never will be, any of that Galtian bullshit at any of my businesses. Oh noes, I'm only a paper millionaire because I believe in responsible work hours, comprehensive benefits, generous vacation time, and ridiculously competitive pay packages. Give me a friggin break.

Apologies for the shitty grammar. Apparently this new JE interface is even worse than I thought.

I still enjoy the FP - I mean mostly as much as before. But here in JE land it has been super quiet.

Me too! In fact - when my parents come visit this summer they will flip because my hair is longer than it has ever been. What? Isn't long hair the definition of liberal? But actually in a lot of other ways. I had a long car ride with a young Hungarian guy who interacts a lot with my peer group - evangelical missionaries from the US and to be honest while I could sympathize with a lot of his questions and incomprehension - I could not answer or make it comprehensible. I'm a weirdo in a group of even bigger weirdos.

Here's a fun story I like to tell.

In the 90s I kept my hair practically bald, and spent a lot of time railing against President Clinton. Most people thought I was a right-wing whack job.

Fast forward to 2000-2001. I took a job at a company in start-up mode and was working mad hours. Enough that I let haircuts pass me by. By the time that business imploded, my hair was long enough that a friend suggested "grow it out a bit and ponytail it." I thought what the heck, and did so.

In that time, we also switched presidents. By the start of 2002, I wore my hair in a ponytail and railed against President Bush. The only things that changed was the president and my hair length. At that point, everyone thought I was a left-wing whack job.

I joked that if Obama won in 2008, I'd have to cut my hair and go back to being a right-wing whack job. The problem is the right wing whack jobs are somewhat more annoying and a lot more stupid now than they were 15 years ago. Not wanting to be confused for those idiots, my hair is long, but I rail against Obama. Now nobody knows what to make of me.

The last president I liked? Grover Cleveland. I'm still a whack job. :-)

Put this [slashdot.org] in your slashbox and smoke it... Get it right the first time. Getting in to re-edit is a bit trickier.

Also paper millionaire and liberal (1)

I too belong to your category. But mostly because I save like crazy and live cheaply.

Now if I could just whittle away at my 800 hours of unused vacation time ...

My FP is more neutered... (1)

damn_registrars (1103043) | more than 2 years ago | (#40365109)

... and I have no idea why. I normally don't see the poll question when I'm on the FP and logged in, nor do I see the archive headlines (stories from X number of years ago on the same day). I've noticed this for some time but can't find a way to change it back.

Check yer prefs... you know how to get there, right?

I don't know if you're just trolling me or what, but yes I know where the preferences are. And I have yet to find one that pertains to suppression of the poll booth.

Damn! You really are stupid!

It's right there under the 'Slashboxes' tab... 'Slashdot Poll'... Uncheck it, you dumb fuck!

Was checked ... now un-checked ... still not showing up. Thanks for playing, but it didn't work.

And on what nonsensical plane does it make sense to uncheck something to display it? Especially when it says "you can check up to 25 boxes"? The instructions suggest that checking a box would show it.

Then turn off your script blocking bullshit.

Then turn off your script blocking bullshit.

That would be a great idea - if I was using any such 'script blocking bullshit'. Try again. Besides if I was using such a thing, why wouldn't it block the poll when I'm not logged in?

sigh... how I miss the days when we had decent trolls here.

there you go again, showing the the mental defect that is dumb_registrars. to be expected from someone who takes in such a heavy dose of obamunism such as yourself. we can't fix you - just go play in traffic and the world will take care of your problem.

knowing you, you likely will instead make a new account now called mental_defect and try to hide behind it just like you do with logical_failure.

Being in the 1% (1)

Marxist Hacker 42 (638312) | more than 2 years ago | (#40371991)

Is about INCOME, not ASSETS. Income over $325,000/year to be precise, but for fudge factor and to protect my blog postings against inflation, I go to the .08% of $500,000/year (there's a strange gap in the United States between the .008% and the .08%- the difference in income is $1.5 million- most everybody is below the $500,000/year line, but for those above, an even small minority even in the midst of recession is earning over $2 million/year- of course there is no way to do that on labor alone unless you're an NBA talent, and even then, it's not sustainable over more than about 10 years, your body will just break down).

If your ASSETS are in the 1%, chances are your income isn't anywhere close. You would need productive assets in the 9 figure range to make 7 figure income.

Fair enough. By your metric, should only take another 5 years then.

At which point, for believers at least who start complaining about the taxes of the 1%, I refer them to the example of St. Katherine Drexel. I'm not sure if the Philadelphia Nun's Loophole is still in tax law (last time I checked it was, but that was *many* moons ago), but it's still damn good advice for anybody who has income that exceeds spending ability.

I'm there with you, brother (1)

Yes, YES, _YES_... the world needs more of you.

If the 1% acted like you do, then wealth really WOULD trickle down... problem is that oftentimes the people with tons of money are greedy, and try and close off any trickle down that is possible in order to save every last damn penny. (Dam penny? v_v sure, why not...)
