That whole treatise presupposes that freedom is a good thing. And that presumes acceptance of the notion of the sanctity of the individual. But Islamists, who want religion to subsume govt., and Leftists, who want govt. to subsume religion, do not, and see freedom as a bad thing. Individuals with freedom can hurt the society, and it's the collective that's valued the highest.

You don't get it: Totalitarianism is the goal. It's central to modern Leftist thought that people simply cannot be trusted to make the right decisions. So they must be made for them.
It's a values divide. I value individual liberty and will accept as its cost a highly imperfect society*. Leftists and Islamists value a highly ordered and perfected society so much that not a single tear is shed for the loss in people's rights and freedoms that follow.

The only defect is that liberty itself does not seem to be really defended in that story; in that world, the battle is between different levels

Note, however, that the best lies are half-truths. If Karl Marx convinced so many people, then it is likely that some of his critique against Capitalism is true.
We must not necessarily become anarcho-capitalists just because Marx was wrong.
In fact, many great orthodox Catholics like Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc and Cardinal Reinhard Marx have severely criticized Capitalism.
Pope Benedict also does not seem to like wild Capitalism.

It's likely that some of Karl Marx's critique of capitalism is true, but I don't think he's convinced a very large number of people. People have adopted Marxist ideas because it's been popularized. The few who have studied the Leftist texts have infiltrated my country's information dissemination institutions -- education, journalism, and entertainment -- and have demonized opposing ideas and made it cool and hip to hold Leftist views. But the masses don't know them as Leftist views, they just know what's so
