Journal smittyoneeach's Journal: If Petraeus doesn't run for POTUS on the 2016 GOP ticket. . . 23

. . .I don't know how I'm going to muster enthusiasm to fall in line for the conservative Charlie Brown parade.
After John McCain and Mitt Romney, I really need somebody with the stature and courage of DP to call for another head-on charge at Lucy, clutching balls the way she does, only to offer another grotesque yank at the last second, letting conservatives fall down, gasping. Again. For another four years. In the name of Progress.
Ah, political fantasy football.

If Petraeus doesn't run for POTUS on the 2016 GOP ticket. . .

  • Why don't you throw your own name in? You can run on the Burma Shave platform. No doubt you'll have the catchiest slogans...

    • Have you heard of Virgil Goode [washingtonpost.com]?
I lack the requisite megalomania, money, mob, and mendacity to run for office.
My wife's not supportive, my son is 15 months old, and my federalist platform is too conservative for the GOP.
My local GOP candidate, Patrick Murray, lost 1:2 against Jim Moran
Even Fairfax County politics is an absolute ball-room brawl.

What I bring to politics is some technical skills, leadership experience, and patience to the role of supporter.
  • Sure, he can run on the usual GOP family values platform.

One photo op with Bryan Fischer and they'll forget all about him stepping out on his wife of 35 years.

    • There is that, although one questions the timing of the revelation.
      • Pity. His disgrace came, not from conducting military operations against civilian populations or spying on his own citizens, but from simple acts of coitus.

They were waiting to 86 him for a while...

This wasn't discovered yesterday - and would have been hushed, were it necessary for the right people to have it so.

He's pretty clearly being taken off the chessboard.

That said? He could run, as "disaster-proofed". The worst has already happened. But that could only work as a Democrat - or a televangelist.

        • The irony atop the pity is that military officers are held to higher standards than elected officials.
Some officeholders would look at that, say, "Just the one?" and accuse Petraeus of not exploiting power enough.
        • Knight jumps queen! Bishop jumps queen!

You gotta go with what works and throw the dogs off the trail. It kept Clinton out of the hoosegow..

    • Heh, for some reason, I doubt that's the real story.

      • No, I envision
        - Petraeus getting told what he'd say before Congress,
        - stating that he'd reveal the truth of Benghazi as it unrolled,
        - pressure being applied for Petraeus to sell his soul for rock'n'roll, and
        - Petraeus clinging bitterly to vanquished notions of truth and honor, even in the midst of personal disgrace.
        Or not--that's pure speculation.
No matter what Petraeus reveals about the missing 18 1/2 minutes of White House tape, BHO is not a crook, and he's not going to go down over this burglary.

Some traditions never die... I find it kinda nostalgic

          • I find the asymmetry with which the media treats the parties to be disturbing in the extreme.
            • Oh please, everybody gets their turn to drive. Think of it as a Chinese fire drill at every stoplight.

              • Katrina => Sandy
                Watergate => Benghazi

I'll nod to your 'Oh please', if you're willing to admit that the bias goes just a bit past simple existential subjectivity for the public figures involved.
And by 'just a bit', I mean 'flog me gently with a barrel cactus'.
                • What "bias"? The people are distracted and divided by meaningless drivel while the system remains unscathed. The media is serving its purpose very admirably. It would make Goebbels cry tears of joy.

One minor point, if you want to compare Benghazi to something, make it: Benghazi = Iran/Contra. Both were weapons smuggling schemes worthy of life sentences for the perps. Watergate was simple breaking and entering. Ok, two points, "Monica-gate" saved a lot of people from going to prison, republicans and democr

                  • Benghazi = Iran/Contra is a good call, assuming a proper investigation reveals all of the rumored details.
I'm not sure the story quite ends there, depending on how the dots connect.
The point is that there was no body count for Watergate, yet the press crucified Nixon.
Regardless of the details, an Ambassador died on Obama's watch, and BHO enjoys his usual pass.
                    • ....yet the press crucified Nixon

They had to, before anybody important got snared in the trap. It's how to put a quick stop to an investigation. It happens all the time on a local level when the cops are after a particular, usually innocent, target.

Ah, so then we can blame Bush for 9/11...

These sex "scandals" serve a very useful purpose, and I would venture to say that a lot of them are complete fabrications, but t

                    • Ah, so then we can blame Bush for 9/11...

Absolutely we can, and should, if the WTC is a consulate, security was pulled, &c.
Seriously. You want the job as POTUS, you want the victory lap for bagging Osama, you get the blame for the blood.
Throw in FDR for Perl Harbor, and Kennedy for PHP Harbor (Bay of Pigs).
                    • ...if the WTC is a consulate, security was pulled, &c.

Of dear... still stuck in the muck. It's hopeless...

                    • In other words, "Nothing to see here, move on. . ." So much wrong has occurred in history through such complacency.
                    • In other words, "Nothing to see here, move on. . ."

?? What on earth are you talking about?

                    • I thought I was talking about that one thing, but then I--oh, shiny!
                    • *sigh* So disappointing

              • I suppose, in your favor, you can point out that Monica-gate is an example of the press going after Clinton.
In reply, I'd question whether the wrist-slap didn't count as foreplay.
