A lot of you were asking about marotti.com. The deal with marotti.com is simple. I want to put in the JVM, tomcat (and jboss, possibly), struts, and a good DB, but I have under 100MB free on the disk. I need to upgrade the harddrive before I can do anything with the website. And I have a mortgage to pay, and a lease to break out of, so the likelihood of me getting a new harddrive before January is pretty slim.

So, feel free to enjoy the test page. I don't think I'll be able to do much more (maybe a cheesy html-only site) for a while.

  • You can get tomcat, a JRE, and use XML for your data stores if you are really tight on disk space. Mind you, there are things a db will do that will be a fair bit of work, but xpath can work in a pinch. If you build your model right, you should be able to swap it out for SQL later in the year, as well as turning your javabeans to helper beans calling EJB's.
    • Tomcat and struts don't take up that much space, and I can probably get a small DB installed, no problem. Its the Java JDK/VM that takes up the monster space. That's where I run into problems.

      I just need to find a good 10-20GB drive for like $30 (or less).
      • Just install the JRE, rather the full blown JDK. Makes a huge impact. Sounds like it is hosted, thus a quota problem?... the server have a lot of RAM*?

        What DB are you going with?

        • No, its my box, I just had to build it with what I had lying around. Which ended up being 4 HDs with under 1GB of space each.

          And I don't want to give up KDE and X :-P

          Oh how I wish. But you need a java compiler on the live site. Yet another braindead design brought to you by Sun Microsystems. FWIW, I've reduced bloat somewhat on our production sites by only installing the JRE, and just adding tools.jar from the JDK.

      • pricewatch says $36 for 20Gig. Here in the UK (which is invariably more expensive than US) 49 quid for 40gig.

        There was thtat story on Slashdot about the guys who mined data from hard drives that were sold at garage sales. Maybe you could find a cheap temporary hard drive.
  • Here's an idea:

    You could point your dyndns to my server and I could set up a temporary weblog type site that runs in ASP.NET (so at least you have something going other than a test page?). Then when you get your new hard drive, you could install Mono and run the site as is :)

      LOL. The first hit is always free, right? :-)

      • Hehe.. Actually, MONO is free. There are also some good tools available for developing ASP.NET pages (Web Matrix). Granted, they're not VS.NET but should work fine enough.

        Supposedly, most stuff will port over to the Mono platform but I have never done it-- definitely want to try!

  • It looks like you might be getting other offers. If you want to run MySQL (or better, don't mind running MySQL), I can whip up a quick DB at my host site. I have unlimited MySQL, or at least a threshhold I'm not even close to.
    I can set you up as admin and it even has phpmyadmin installed.
    So long as you don't mind the db being hosted on something like marotti.brew-masters.com.
