I'm not the father, what do you mean I have to pay???

  • I remember reading a couple of months ago about a guy who wasn't the biological father of a kid, but his girlfriend skipped out on him, leaving him with the baby for *2 years*, then came back, GOT CUSTODY of the child, and even though he was found to thoroughly NOT be the child's father, he had to pay child support, because he took care of the kid for 2 years. It seems the mother was aware of this statute, and just dumped her kid for the requisite amount of time, so she could get child support.

    • My question is, if he was taking care of the child because she skipped out, then upon her return, how the hell did she get custody, especially if she could not support the child on her own?
      • It is ridiculously difficult for any man to get custody of even his OWN children, much less if they are NOT his own. I think that even 2 years of taking care of someone else's children is not a good enough reason to get custody (especially for a man). Perhaps they should have counter sued since because she obviously abused the law...?
        • but she ran out on him. That's what gets me. If he had custody for two years and she fought it, then I'd see a slight reason, but since she ran out, she shouldn't get custody.
          • Doesn't matter. I've got a friend who is separated. He picked up his kids for the weekend (or evening). His wife went a little nutso. She hopped in her car, and tried to run him off the road. Actually hit his car with hers. He probably won't get custody because her father retained an attorney who has filed so many motions that he can no longer contest anything.

If you think that the court system is screwed up when it comes to IP, check out family court sometime.
      • I don't remember the particulars; something about a state that almost always places children with their mothers. I'll try to dig it up, if I can remember where I read it -- all I remember was that it was off my usual sites. I was horrified.
