  • No kidding... Boston was (literally) designed by cows. Where the cows went, they made roads.

    That's the part they didn't build on the swamp.

      What I love most about the quote is how brilliantly it uses "geek" terminology to discuss urban form. It's a crossover we need a lot more of.
      • I always do, when available.

        While I think the same way you do, no one I know understands me when I make analogies like that. It's actually fairly depressing to make a very obvious reference, or joke, or whatever and have people treat it literally.

        So I agree with you, but I don't think it's going to happen.

      • What we need more of is understanding and learning. Geek terminoligy in everyday usage is just going to add to miscommunication if people don't understand what they're saying, or if they're using a new vernacular instead the accepted geek meaning, they're just going to muddy the waters more.

        Honestly I think I might have had enough geek terminoligy today though. I had to sit through a day long technology meeting today where they word persist was used to mean 'save to a non-voliatile data store, i.e. a per
  • I love the quote! It makes me think how trivial most problems in software development and migration are, compared to common engineering situations...
    • No kidding. I'm studying transportation planning... and finding it's a whole lot like telecom, but if the packets made up their own minds about how they were going to get from one place to another. And if it typically took 10 bytes to transmit a single character...
    • This is because computers won't put up with the sort of inane shit that people will.
