New Fyodor Evidence Released

Security 16

Trollaxor.com has obtained a cache of Fyodor's "Troll Hunting 101", briefly posted to www.insecure.org/tmp/trolls in 2002 by Fyodor shortly after hacking the computer of a Slashdot prankster. I have been advised that the images and content in this cache have been modified to protect the name and personal information of Fyodor's hacking victim (SumDeusExMachina) which Fyodor initially saw fit to publish. The modifications appear in bold and are clearly marked as REDACTED.

I would like to invite anyone who witnessed this firsthand in 2002 to post a comment certifying that this content is accurate to the best of their recollection below in the comment section.

I personally certify that this content was posted to www.insecure.org in 2002, and that I personally loaded and witnessed it.

The Cache.

It looks legit to me. I was the one to originally post my browser's cache contents (to a site sdem.50megs.com, I believe) after posting in trolltalk and offering to send it to anyone that replied to fake_spam_address@yahoo.com. If I recall correctly, 4 or 5 people asked for the archive and I sent it. I since deleted it long ago, but it looks like one of those copies survived somewhere.

Anyone can post AC and it looks like astroturfing. Please use your actual /. account to certify this; the more eyewitnesses, the better. Any shadow of a doubt must be removed.

I wish I still had the e-mail from Fyodor to prove it. In fact, another little ditty that was never told: The page was submitted as a story to Slashdot, but the editors waited a day until the page was deleted, then rejected the story submission.

That mirror is accurate (1)

I viewed the content on insecure.org, and it is accurate to the best of my recollection.

I can testify to this as well. (1)

I remember it, because in the middle of August 2003, I was doing a network security audit at work and needed to find some nmap documentation, so I checked insecure.org for it. I was shocked by the "Pathetic Life of a Slashdot Troll" article. I never knew that Fydor would stoop to the level of a criminal. I'd actually used nmap only for legal purposes (security auditing), and I assumed that's why nmap existed. I guess I was wrong.

I don't know what's more sad, the fact that this even happened, or the fact that the author (an adult, mind you) of the best-known portscanner in the world spent 12 hours or more on a "project" that even a typical high-schooler would be too mature to engage in.

I did save a copy of the page, and it's pretty much identical to the mirror that was posted recently. But I already had part of it in my memorable quotes file months ago:

We were also going to post some of his files, passwords, and full keystroke logs, but that would be gratuitously mean. After all, he is only a high school kid, so maybe he will mend his ways. Sdem: if you are reading this, change your passwords before we change our mind :).

White Hat? Doesn't sound like it.

Foiled! Nice try though. (1)

Hi Gendou! That was an excellent and believable post, so why did you have to ruin it by using your troll account?! Don't you have any others? Nobody will believe someone who regularly posts to trolltalk [slashdot.org] and whose Fans list [slashdot.org] reads like a who's who of Trolling. You are even on the No More Trolls Blacklist [slashdot.org]!

I respect your work, but please be more careful next time! Slip-ups like this hurt our credibility.

Who knew CmdrTaco was a troll account?

Looks like a lot of pics are missing on that page. From the ones that did load, though, I do remember seeing 'em the first time around on insecure.org...
