So, turns out my first cousin, Allison Saari Byrne, was in fact 20 feet from the finish line when the first bomb went off and was, in fact, wounded.
She's in for knee surgery right now but is alive and will be ok.
Seriously, why do people keep attacking my family. First my brother and uncle (World Trade 9-11 they worked there, but not in office during attack), now my uncle's daughter (my cousin).

Less snarkily, Will, one rejoices that your sister lives. May her recovery be speedy. And God rest the souls of the fallen, comfort their immediate relatives, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Just like when 9/11 happened, and the guy who was president started the department of homeland security, right? I don't remember now, who was president on 9/11/2001? Must have been Clinton, or maybe Carter, right? Certainly republicans wouldn't take a national tragedy and use it to expand government, or start two wars on the other side of the world.

As the government admitted today, we illegally tortured people, not that it worked (it didn't), after 9-11.
Torture does not work. Terrorist acts are usually a sign that you're losing the "argument".
But it's personal to me now. And my sympathies or ability to listen to said arguments just went out the window.

Kind of how I felt about it when my cousin died in Iraq 6 years ago. Fuck the Iraqis, fuck Al Qaeda, fuck Bush and Cheney. My cousin's dead, and the only solace I take from it is my great-uncle Olin died a month before it happened so he didn't have to see his grandson come back in a box.

You know, we should probably come up with some vague "right to livingspace fairness" so that the government can control population density.
MH42 might be headed that way, since he wants to ensure that nobody is in a non-married, non-child-bearing relationship, and he wants the government to ensure that is the case. And you thought that only liberals wanted the government in the bedroom...

I've always understood 'moral relativism' as a denial of any ultimate truth. 'Moral relativism' is something related to 'situational ethics', AFAICT. But I wouldn't accuse MH42 of either.

If you want to distinguish strictly between moral relativism and situational ethics, then I would I say I recently witnessed the latter. I don't want to continue to discuss someone else when they aren't present in this discussion, so I will leave it at the fact that he contradicted himself a lot in that discussion and frequently made statements along the lines of "everyone should be forcibly held to ethics X, except for special group B who can do whatever they want".

Made it through both surgeries, now on crutches.

Sounds like she had a good share of luck. Glad to hear that she came through the surgeries ok. Hope that she makes a full recovery.

Yup. So far. My aunt and uncle will fill us in after we give her a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed (glad she has hers)
