Winner as far as guessing goes was definitely FuzzyBad-Mofo. The booby prize for most half-points goes to Bethanie. and the award for most pics entered was certainly Heliocentric.

it's interesting to note how relatively easy it was to identify each other's faces yet so hard to identify our computers, especially when we're on such a technically minded forum. Just goes to show there's more than technology to this place.

yep...that's mine and my wife's bookshelf, along with her Athlon 1800+ XP with 1.125 GB RAM, 60 GB Western Digital hard drive, rounded IDE/FDD cables, aluminum full tower window case with 5 quad-redLED fans and a Riva TNT2 M64 32MB (which while it may seem a bit out of place does the trick in a non-gamer workstation). The books are definitely the eyecatcher the way she took that photo, though.

we have triples even of some..theres a store out here called 75% off books. They're a book liquidator who has a policy of "nothing over $5". So if i'm there and not sure if I have it, or if its something like [unix|linux] in a Nutshell (which I give away almost faster than I can get them), then I just buy it.

hey, if i knew specifically what you sought i'd be more than happy to keep an eye out when I make my occasional sojourns down there. you could send me the cash and I'd ship them to you (on your tab of course...i'm unemployed.) they're usually either cosmetically flawed (a little dirty looking from handling) or older editions, or sometimes even simply overstock being liquidated. The stock isn't consistent, but it makes up for it in price and the treasure-hunting spirit.

Personally I like Helix's setup [systemsalchemy.org] because of the sweet rack, but I have to give props to myself [systemsalchemy.org] for probably having the most orderly setup out of the bunch..

While I was a fan of Helix's setup [systemsalchemy.org], I have to say that Heliocentric's setup [systemsalchemy.org] is most like what I am likely to create in my computer room over time. Though your desk would win the "which desk do I want" contest. I freely admit that I was pleased to see the Dell and Apple laptops closed yet the Thinkpad (which appears to be not all that unlike my own Thinkpad 600E) was in use.

Funny you should mention the wife factor.... When my bride and I lived in a one bedroom 'compartment', she looked at my collection of boxes and asked if I could consolidate the hardware into one box.

This irony is the actual Sun 3/180 died, but is a test chassis for one of my mini-itx projects. A nice roomy area for water cooling, etc, once I gutted it....

How could FuzzyBad-Mofo guess incorrectly that equipment that clearly wasn't is was his? I mean, I'd know my own equipment if I saw it. I think. :)

If I had guessed my own setup correctly, it would reveal the answer, and omitting it would also be a giveaway.. so the only solution was to guess incorrectly. :)

Ironically, I obtained my results via an extremely quick and dirty Perl script. Admittedly, I did group the pictures manually, taking into account things like the carpeting and camera focus.

For the curious, my main computer is an AMD 1200MHz (SuSE 8.0, 2.4.20 kernel), next to it is my server (AMD 450 MHz, SuSE 8.0). On the desk is one of my "toy" computers (Commodore SX-64), various other relics about the apartment include an Amiga 500, Commodore 128D, and Mac SE (soon to be a MacQuarium).
