Speaking as a guy, I can tell you that we really are morons and jerks. We're not exclusive to the tech sector either, so be careful. Of course theres always exceptions if you look for them, but how hard you look is up to you. You can only put up with the majority so long, and the majorty realy does suck. The mindless filler part of Slashdot is still there for me. I'm just not reading the comments anymore- unless they're made by people I've previously marked as friends, those still interest me.
I'm hanging out more on kuro5hin and a variety of IRC channels instead. It's just more pleasant. =]

IRC is definitly nice to, Much easier to control.
Still a bunch of random jerks, but they're much easier to kick/ban/ignore. (I know, Running irc.goatse.cx is kind of asking for it, but whatever)

Also, the "deficit moderation" is a problem. Scarcity of modpoints encourages positive moderation and leaves stupid comments with high score received before somebody debunked them.
K5 has a much better moderation system, but the users don't seem to be very interested in technical topics. It would be great if somebody set up another Scoo
