Journal fm6's Journal: I have sinned 21

This post just appeared in my metamod queue. "Flamebait" isn't quite correct, but it's close enough to "Offtopic" not to matter. But I couldn't bring myself to endorse the moderation -- because I strongly agree with the observation.

I know some of you think that the mod system is completely broken, so what the heck. Well, if I ever become convinced of that, I'll stop frequenting Slashdot.

I agree with the comment, as well.

While /.'s mod system isn't completely broken, it is sorely bruised; things like underratted/overratted, the lack of names attached to moderations (give you some accountability), and the lack of knowledge whether or not it was an editor who modded you lead to abuse.

Of course, none of the editors care to fix it.

    • Rob said in the last chat that he would never impliment anything that made that much sense.
      • Did he really? o.O (I don't seem to remember that...)
        • Yes, indirectly - for example:

          • Well, it looks as if you're correct.

Either that, or it's "I'm too lazy to impliment anything better; submit patches."

    • I have to disagree with you on the "accountability" issue. Maybe some people consistently misuse their mod points, but I really believe they're in the minority. The big problem is moderators who are just plain pigheaded or bigoted. People like this are not going to respond well to being flamed by all the folks who disagree with their mods. For that matter, neither will the more thoughtful moderators. Moderation has to be anonymous.

In my opinion the moderation system has always been too complicated. Rob s
