Football: First round finished, what do you think?

This isn't just for the Fantasy folk, but our Draft has finished the first round. What do you think so far?

I think I may have picked Portis too early, but I wanted him soon, cause he'll be someone I want around for years to come (I hope). This isn't just for the Fantasy folk, but our Draft has finished the first round. What do you think so far?

I'm out of it (1)

Would anybody kindly mind telling me the status of the 3 most important things in America right now? (i.e. Football, Baseball and Politics)? Thanks.

Well, football is going into its first official preseason week (although there was the american bowl and hall-of-fame game last weekend). So there isn't much exciting news, yet.

Baseball, I dun really know/care about.

Politics? Arnold is running for Governor of Cali, but you prolly already know that.

I agree with FK about football, this will be a REALLY exciting year. Parcells coaching the Cowboys who were awful last year, the Broncos could have a really strong season, the Bucs could easily repeat as world champs.

Baseball, well, my world-champion Angels are in the midst of their midsummer swoon, and are looking like they're making a charge for last place in the AL west. Thusly, I'm looking for a team to root for. I'm thinking Red Sox. :)

Politics...ehh. Cali sucks, I don't even wanna think about that state. I'm so happy I'm in Colorado now. There are maybe 2 worthwhile democrat candidates for the '04 election, but the field is so crowded and they sound like idiot reactionaries whenever they talk (and I'm a registered Democrat!)

So, that's it from my view.

the picks look decent (1)

EggMan2000 (308859) | about 11 years ago | (#6646570)

It is a keeper league, but the elites still need to be selected. I had the last pick (14th) so it was getting pretty slim as far as elite players go. I got a couple good rbs though as our league allows more than one rb on the field for a game.

Re:the picks look decent (1)

FortKnox (169099) | about 11 years ago | (#6646631)

Actually, you can have 3 rbs active in one game (remember, its 1RB, 1WR, and 2RB/WR).

You had two good picks, and don't forget (I hope this doesn't come back to bite me), that no one has picked a WR yet.... ;-)

Portis (1)

siliconvortex (235693) | about 11 years ago | (#6646802)

I don't think it was too early. He wouldn't have been there in the second round, I would have grabbed him in the second round if he had still been available :). If he's the one you wanted you had to get him there.

My 2cents (1)

DaytonCIM (100144) | about 11 years ago | (#6647207)

I'm not in the league, but I'm going to give my 2 cents anyway. ;)

Daunte Culpepper QB, Vikings - Kormoc
I think taking Culpepper over Vick is a mistake. The Vikings are not set to do much this season, other than try and keep up with a mediocre Packer team. Unlike Atlanta who went out in the off-season and picked up some targets for Vick, the Vikings are counting on their "troubled" potential hall-of-fame receiver Randy Moss and Culpepper to hook up this year. I hope Moss has his head in the game and not elsewhere.

Michael Vick QB, Falcons - Sielwolf
In my humble opinion, Vick is the most explosive and most dynamic player that the NFL has seen since Walter Payton. And while Culpepper is a good QB in his own right, I don't think he'll be nearly the offensive powerhouse that Vick will be this season. Atlanta wants the playoffs and the Super Bowl badly and showed their commitment by going out and getting Vick some offensive support. I think Sielwolf got a steal here and I think week in and week out he's going to be the guy to beat.

Clinton Portis RB, Broncos - FK
Portis as the first RB pick? Before Williams, Tomlinson, and Holmes? I gotta say I think this is a mistake FK. Williams has a better Oline supporting him and a proven QB guiding the Offense. Denver has a new QB and Portis is only in his second year. Is he ready to step up and lead the offense if Plummer falters? I had Portis as one two RBs last year and I admit he was much better than expected, but in only his second season and with Plummer I think a safer Fantasy pick would have been Williams or Holmes.

Donovan McNabb QB, Eagles - Helio
McNabb is back and healthy. I love watching McNabb play because he reminds me of the smash-mouth players of the past. McNabb will do everything necessary to score and that includes putting his shoulder down and hitting someone. Last season he was dominant before going down with a broken leg. The Eagles defense is not as strong this season and as such the Offense must score and score often. Good pick.

Ricky Williams RB, Dolphins - asv108
Best thing Williams ever did was fire Master P as his agent. I think he's going to have a break out year. Miami's Oline is healthy and ready. Williams looks healthy and ready. I'm curious to see how many carries he gets this weekend against the Bucs and how hard he runs. The Miami QB controversy won't affect Williams. He's gone through it before and really doesn't care who hands him the ball. Good pick.

LaDanian Tomlinson RB, Chargers - siliconvortex
LaDanian Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander have one thing in common: they're both very good running backs on mediocre teams. Both of these guys were the offense for their respective team last year. Neither the Chargers, nor the Seahawks did much in the off-season to improve their offense. Look for both of these guys to carry 25+ times a game this season and rush for 1200+ yards. Unfortunately, carrying that many times a game means injury. I suspect that Tomlinson will again miss one to two games this season. Good pick.

Peyton Manning QB, Colts - Magnetar Jones
To everyone who believed the Manning hype is a huge disappointment. But, for those of us that know how different the NFL game is from college, Manning is doing ok. However, he has the most underrated receiver in the league that happens to destroy defenses on a weekly basis and yet still finds ways to lose games. Now, in all fairness the Colts defense last year was pathetic and should take 50% of the blame for the abysmal season. This is really a do or die year for Manning. I think he knows and wants to step up and make the playoffs this year. I think he also knows if he doesn't he's headed elsewhere. Kind of a question mark. He could go either way.

Priest Holmes RB, Chiefs - MC Hampster
*Applauds* Hampster's pick. Everyone is scared off because of his hip. I've heard Bo Jackson mentioned in the same sentence as Holmes and yes it could be that Holmes' career may be cut short like Jackson's. But, not this season. The Chiefs went out and drafted Larry Johnson. Why is this important? Johnson is a catalyst for Holmes to do better. I think that this is a sleeper pick of the draft. I expect that Holmes will dominate like he did last season. Very good pick.

Jeremy Shockey TE, Giants - Blackneto
Giants are poised to win the East and head to the playoffs. That said, how many times are they going to throw to their loudmouth TE? A lot. Very good pick.

Chad Pennington QB, Jets - Keith
Can he repeat the magic from last season? I'm not sure that I would take Pennington over Brooks or Favre for that matter. But, if he does paly as well as he did last year, he could be a very good source of points.

Marshall Faulk RB, Rams - RedWarrior
I had the chance to pick him up in my draft and did not. I'm not sure about the Rams offense. It seems like everyone is healthy and ready to return to their Championship form, however too many question marks. Can Faulk go 16 games? Can the aging Rams Oline give him some lanes in which to run?

Aaron Brooks QB, Saints - Cliff
I think Brooks gets lost in Vick's shadow. I personally think that after this season Brooks is going to be one of the 3 best QBs in the NFL. He's got great feet and a good arm and scrambles well. One more year of experience with NFL defenses and I think this kid breaks out and takes the Saints to the playoffs. This year I think he'll be a week-in, week-out stable source of points. Good pick.

Deuce McAllister RB, Saints - daoine
Good pick. Saints Oline is fairly healthy and stable. I think McAllister rushes for 1300 yards and 14 TDs this season. Very good pick.

Shaun Alexander RB, Seahawks - Eggman
This is a sleeper pick of the draft. Everyone take notice. Alexander is the most underrated rusher in the league. No one gives him respect for the simple reason he's on a terrible Sea Hawks team. Thing is Alexander is the Seahawks offense. Like McAllister, I think Alexander goes for 1300+ yards and 14TDs.

What no Bears in the 1st round? What's wrong with you guys? ;)

Remember, we are in a keeper league, which is why you are seeing people chose young instead of the best player for each position.

Re:My 2cents (1)

heliocentric (74613) | about 11 years ago | (#6647634)

I think McNabb is both young and a great player in his position. I would not be a bit surprised if scores the most points for a QB this season in FFL. At the very least third place.

If all goes well, my second round pick will not be keeping with the young player thing as I hope to next year pick up a decent nubie... but if all goes un-well, I have a young player I'm thinking of for round 3 that I might bump up.

Rookie RBs often have a break out year only to trail off in their second year.

Re:My 2cents (1)

MagnetarJones (447059) | about 11 years ago | (#6648067)

McNabb was going to be my pick if he lasted that long, he didn't. I think that McNabb will be the top QB this year. While Vick is good and getting better he doesn't have the team resources that McNabb does.
Manning, IMHO, is a genius - he reads defense to perfection, has the athletic ability and is a great leader. I see ability in him that rivals Joe Montana, but his offensive corps are his weekness.

Now as far as how the draft has gone its surprising that so many QB's have been picked first, thats why I grabbed Manning while I had the chance. I think those picking later in the second round will suffer because of the slim pickings at QB.

That's the fun part about FF in a league this size. There aren't enough top tier players at any position for all of the teams. You just try to get a top tier in on or two positions and hope for a sleeper to work out. I'd be suprised to see many more QB's go for a while, as people head for WR's, or even over to the DB/DL's to get a head start on the tops in those positions.

FortKnox (169099) | about 11 years ago | (#6648982)

Yeah, I usually play in 6 or 8 team games, when most people have a lot of good players. This league will come down to everyone having one or two elites, the rest goes down as regulars. Will be fun :-)

daoine (123140) | about 11 years ago | (#6648393)

No kidding, I was shocked to be able to pick up a decent RB first round. I just was torn over my QB pick -- it's hard to pass up Gannon, but the whole keeper league thing nags at me. :)

Re:My 2cents (1)

DaytonCIM (100144) | about 11 years ago | (#6649315)

While Vick is good and getting better he doesn't have the team resources that McNabb does.

Did you read about the off-season moves the Falcons made? And the fact that Duce Staley still has not reported to camp for the Eagles.

No, my money is solely on Vick. He faster, stronger, and simply a better QB than McNabb.

Re:My 2cents (1)

EggMan2000 (308859) | about 11 years ago | (#6650480)

Vick's got peerless price to throw to now. Combined now with a great WR, I think Vick will easily be the tops this year in QB.

I am amazed that so many QBs are already gone. I have a few sleepers in mind though, so not too worried. But to see Vick, Manning, Pennington, Culpepper, McNabb, and McNair all picked in the first 16 picks is wild!

This will be a fun league, and am really looking forawrd to the competition. I've never been in a 14 team league before. It really changes things a bit in the draft.
