I have since heard the joke that Usenet has proven this not to be true.
This site actually is attempting to prove the original concept. Sure, it's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but cool nonetheless.

There was an article in the news a month or two ago about an experiment that had been done by giving computers to zoo monkeys to see what they'd type.
The conclusion was that they'd never type the works of Shakespeare because their behaviour wasn't actually random. For example, once the monkeys' figured out the relationship between pushing buttons and what happened on the screen, they enjoyed holding down one key and watching the same letter appear hundreds of times in a row.
