Football: Week 1 Predictions

This year will be like last. I don't do the 'points' thing except to prove how strong or weak my choices are. I'll always be a sleeper of the week, and you can tell me how wrong I am (but at least explain yourself). I'll order them in the order they play:This year will be like last. I don't do the 'points' thing except to prove how strong or weak my choices are. I'll always be a sleeper of the week, and you can tell me how wrong I am (but at least explain yourself). I'll order them in the order they play:

Jets vs Skins: No Pennington, no Coles (well, for the Jets), no Morton and Martin is running on two bad legs. If I was Edwards, I'd be thinking hard about retiring Martin for LaMont Jordan. Shouldn't be much of a game. Skins by 10

Ravens vs Steelers: Two solid Ds. But which O will produce? The first matchup of these two last year was the Ravens winning, then Maddox coming in his first game to come from behind to win. The second matchup was an utter blowout. I expect a blowout here again. Steelers by 17

Texans vs Dolphins: I've got to play against Ricky Williams this week. Feel pity for me. Phins by 14

Rams vs Giants: People expect great things out of the Giants this year. But I think you'll be surprised to see a healthy Kurt Warner + healthy Marshal Faulk = the superbowl offense of old. High scoring game! St Louis by 3

Colts vs Browns: Have the Colts caught on to Tony Dungies Cover-2 D? Either way, Payton Manning and Edge will have a hey-day against the completely young and useless Browns D. Another VERY high scoring game. Colts by 7

Broncos vs Bengals: SLEEPER PICK Yes, I expect to be laughed at for this one. If the Bengals O can be what they were at the end of last year and the D caught on to Lewis' power D, this could be quite a game. The Broncos have a strong O, but a slow D. If the Bengals don't win, it'll be a CLOSE game. Bengals by 1

Cardinals vs Lions: The Lions were pitiful last year. Last year. Lions by 3

Jags vs Panthers: Peete at QB is a joke, right? Not when you have a really good D, and a powerhouse RB. Panthers by 3

Pats vs Bills: Everytime Bledsoe faces up against Belichick, he gets his ass handed to him. Bledsoe will probably suffer some headaches this game too. HOWEVER, the Bills D is looking mighty strong this year, so the Pats Mediocre O will have a hard time against the Bills. This is your boring low-scorer of the week. I love the idea of Bledsoe beating his old team for the first time at home, though. Bills by 3

Chargers vs Chiefs: The Bolts have a strong and young D. The also have a good running game and maturing passing game. The Chiefs have a superb running game, good QB, but it all comes down to the chiefs D. If good, they are playoff material, if poor, well... it'll be a long year. Bolts by 1

Vikes vs Packers: The Vikings left a bad taste in my mouth last year. The O got worse with the loss of benett. All they have is a decent D to depend on. Packers by 7

Saints vs Seahawks: This will be a good game to watch. Both teams are trying to prove they can get over that 'hump' into the post season. I have a tough time picking either side. Both have great QBs, Ds, RBs, but the Saints WRs are slightly better than the Seahawks. Saints by 1

Falcons vs Cowboys: The Cowboys secondary is steller. The Falcons have a good D, also, but they are putting in a QB that will probably pass more to Roy Williams than Peerless Price. But I have a feeling the Falcons will employ more of a running game. Falcons by 2

Bears vs 49ers: The 49ers are on the downslope. However, the Bears haven't done much to improve its O, and the D is looking worse with the 'big man' in the middle. 49ers by 3

Raiders vs Titans: The Raiders hit the wall. Sorry Blackneto, but this year is not looking too good for the men in black. The Titans, on the other hand, look very solid this year (many have them picked for the superbowl). Titans by 7

Bucs vs Eagles: The Bucs just don't have a good offense, in my opinion. I don't think they deserved the Crown. My emotions have perverted my pick. Eagles by 3

no prediction for the bears/niners? (1)

Em Emalb (452530) | more than 10 years ago | (#6868756)

As you well know, I am a rabid bears fan. I have too many questions to make any predictions yet this year:

Which Kordell will we see. The one from years past or the one who failed badly the last few years in Pitt?

Is the D healthy and wise enough this year? Is the loss of whatsisname at LB that much of a loss?

Will Urlacher be the same beast with a new linebacker playing with him?

Can the team stay healthy? Start 98!!! (IIRC) different players last year. let that sink in. 98.

Which team will we see? The one that went 13-3, or the 4-12 team from last year? I hope the former.

Everything seems right in the world when the Bears are winning.

Whatcha think?

Da Bears still suck.

GO PACKERS!!!!!!

Em Emalb (452530) | more than 10 years ago | (#6869230)

And WHY do they suck?

Because they aren't the packers?

Just wait til Favre retires. Then we'll see who sucks in the black n blue division.

Packers fans....sheesh.

If you don't have something nice to say, don't say nothing at all ;)

Yes! He picked the Niner's (1)

Though it looks like the Bears may have a chance, a slight chance, but a chance none the less....

Go Niners!!!

What's the 49ers pick? (1)

FirstNoel (113932) | more than 10 years ago | (#6868937)

You didn't give a score for the Bears and Niners?

Ugh, and that the one I was looking for.

Oh well I guess I'll jest have to watch ESPN...

Sorry. Just added it. I think its pretty clean I was leaning towards the 49ers for THIS game...

Raiders hit the wall? (1)

Blackneto (516458) | more than 10 years ago | (#6869383)

Based on what? Pre-season? Next thing you will be saying they are too old to make it to the Superbowl.
The team has never taken these games seriously. They have been properly used to give the draftees and walk-ons a look. Also they give a chance for players changing position to get a workout.

I think sunday will be tight and your assessment is good but it may be more like 3.

I think if they split the division games they will take the AFC West again. But I'm not sure about the post season. I usually wait to see how the actual team is playing before I make predictions.

Bears first home game (1)

When is the Bears home opener in their new spaceship... err I mean stadium? Man, is that thing ugly or what?

Only Christmas is better (1)

DaytonCIM (100144) | more than 10 years ago | (#6869680)

Oh! Oh! Oh! Is it already time for FK's predictions? Woo hoo! Ok...

Jets vs Skins: No Pennington, no Coles, and no Morton... Vinny QB'ing. It does not look good for the Jets. (Side note: have you seen the cool ads for this games? Withs Coles saying how excited he is to be playing his old team? LOL!) Let me get it out in the open, I like the Skins. Good program, great ownership, cool fans. But I hate, I loathe, I detest Steve Spurrier. And it pains me to say: Skins take this one tonight. Skins win.

Ravens vs Steelers: It's going to be the Tommy/Plaxico/Hines/Amos show. Solid defense (lacking one major component who was in the wrong place at the wrong time) should step up and keep the Ravens from finding a groove. I'm curious to see how well Tommy does with a healthy Lewis disrupting his day. No matter though, the Steelers have too many offensive threats and too good a D for the Ravens to win. Steelers win.

Texans vs Dolphins: No brainer. Dolphins have a damn good defense. The Texans Oline were terrible last year. With the changes will they be any better for the opener? I think not. I really, really, really like Texan's QB David Carr, but I think that the Texans have way too many question marks on Offense and Defense to overcome a powerful Dolphin team. Dolphins win.

Rams vs Giants: Big question is will Shockey be at the game or at the club? Giants defense is for real and will disrupt Warner and Faulk. I don't think the Rams are as solid as some believe. Giants win.*

Colts vs Browns: Payton Manning surgically dissects the Browns useless secondary, but may have some time on his back with a couple of strong Browns LBs running wild on a weak Colts Oline. Still... Colts win.

Broncos vs Bengals: New QB Jake gets an easy opener to ease into. Portis and Sharpe will give Jake enough weapons from which to choose. I don't see the Cincy Defense giving the Broncos any difficulties. Broncos win.*

Cardinals vs Lions: Is Jeff Blake the answer for the Cards? Is Mariucci(sp) the answer for the Lions? The Lions have a new offensive scheme and a terrific QB, but the Lions lost . I think the Lions win their opener. Lions win.

Jags vs Panthers: I flipped a coin on this one...neither team brings much to the table. Panthers win.

Pats vs Bills: Bledsoe at home. I like the Bills this year (and Bledsoe is one of my fantasy QBs, so I have to go with the Bills!). Bills win.

Chargers vs Chiefs: Bottom line: last year the Chiefs defense sucked and sucked bad. No matter that the Chiefs had two of the top scoring threats in the NFL... their defense couldn't keep anyone from scoring 21 points. I think Vermeil worked very hard in the off-season to not only maintain the explosive Chiefs offense, but to better the defense. The Cheifs front seven are much, much stronger than last year with Vonnie Holliday and Shawn Barber, but the secondary is still questionable. The Chargers rely on Tomlinson for the majority of their offense, but the addition of Boston adds a major downfield threat. But, let's remember that Brees doesn't have a very experienced receiving core to throw to. I think the Chiefs have a better balanced team this year and much improved defense. Chiefs win and win big.*

Vikes vs Packers: The Packers have the biggest problems with the Vikings. The Vikings over the years have played the Packers tough, taking both games last year. I still have to go with the Pack, though. Packers win.

Saints vs Seahawks: This is going to be an offensive scoring fest. Seahawk Alexander wants to prove that he's one of the best backs in the game and Saint Brooks wants to be known as something other than Michael Vick's cousin. If Brooks can keep control his emotions under check and the Saints defense can keep Alexander under 100 yards, then the Saints win. Honestly, I think this game comes down to kickers. Who can make the most extra points and who misses the fewest FG attempts, wins. Saints win.

Falcons vs Cowboys: Even with Vick out, the Falcons are far better than the Cowboys. I am excited to see Williams v Price. Still never count out Papa Parcells. Quincy Carter got the nod for the game, hopefully he's a little less excitable under Papa. I'm calling upset. Cowboys win.*

Bears vs 49ers: I love my Bears. That said I have to be honest, the Bears defense is soft and won't do well against the run this year. I think Hearst has a big game against the Bears. The Bears offense is... well a big, fat question mark. Which version of Kordell Stewart will show up for the game and can Anthony Thomas stay healthy? Too many question marks on offense. Over on my Bears defense, Urlacher is pretty much alone up front against the run, now and that is not good. With all of that said, I'm going to be positive: Bears win.*

Raiders vs Titans: The Geritol bunch is back for more. Yes, I make fun, but damn these guys are good. The offense may be old (except for Mr. Porter), but they know how to put points on the board. I think the Titans watched the Super Bowl A LOT to get ready for this game. Raiders have too many weaknesses on O and D and the Titans are looking WAY too good to let 'Da Raider Nation' get away with a win. Titans win.

Bucs vs Eagles: The Bucs just don't have a good offense, in my opinion. I don't think they deserved the Crown. Ummm, yeah... right. The Bucs have a GREAT defense, with two of the best defensive players in the game right now. The offense is solid and comfortable. Confortable? Yup. The O knows that the Bucs D will keep them in the game, every game. Didn't make that 1st down this time? No problem, our D will get us the ball back. On the flip side, the Eagles HAD a strong D, but lost it to Free Agency. McNabb is back and healthy, but I think Mr. Rice and Mr. Sapp might interfere with his ability to connect with his receivers. And don't forget the stellar Bucs secondary. I think this is the game of the week... looking forward to it! Bucs win. *

So says it all. I couldn't have said it better, myself. So what's a man to do when he can't stand the head coach on his hometown football team? C'mon, tell me!

Am I going to have to write a JE to get an answer?

those pics are interesting. (1)

Agreed on the Raiders. Disagree on Broncos, sort of - My assessment is that Plummer will suck or barely get by until week 3, then you'll see him come into his own and the team. Then look out. But I don't think the Bengals will beat them. Disagree on the Bucs that they didn't deserve it. That's like saying the Angels didn't deserve the World Series title. They (the Bucs) won it fair y square, but they won it with D. Their offense was good enough to get by, and with Gruden and another year, hopefully it'll get better.

I'd write more, but I've got more JEs to slog through.

This'll be a fun year, tho, guaranteed. :)
