Damn, is a lot of the web written by incompetents. And i'm not talking about the content, but the composition of HTML. Even if you are just a bit myopic it can be though reading all the small letters that usually ensues from misuse of Stylesheets (in MSIE you can't change the font size if someone twit has specified an absolute font size) - but now the progressive Brits have made it a crime if you don't design your pages properly - God save the Queen!

BTW, Opera will switch to Google-style text ads in the upcoming 7.20 release.

Because they don't quite support some features from MSIE which are required to view some sites. Although its a long time since i've tried Opera, i tried Firebird just recently and there were other things that annoyed me enougt that i think it would be a problem in the long run. Oh well, can't win(don't try).
How will Google style text adds work in Opera? Will it insert adds on the pages you view, or?

They replace the current rather innocuous banner in the top toolbar space of the earlier versions with two Google ads. On secure and unindexed sites, you see a Buy Opera banner. Note that this was introduced in beta 10 or 11 which wasn't announced very loudly.
Chances are, if a pixel-perfect IE site doesn't work in Firebird, it won't work in Opera either, but I could be wrong.

One thing i didn't like about Firebird was that it insisted on storing datafiles in the windows directory (much like "My Directory") an ideal program for me is something which only stores its information in its install directory. Alas they are few and far between.

In that case, you should check the single-user check box when installing Opera. That will keep the datafiles in the same directory as the executable.;)

But it probably uses a bloaware installer (which just needs to store several megs of guff on the c drive), or fill up the registry with typelibraries classids *G*

OK. Isn't what you are describing here a result of nasty Microsoft's policy of "embrace and extend"? Isn't what you are describing a consequence of Microsoft not complying with the HTML standards? Doesn't Microsoft FrontPage generate broken web-pages with non-compliant HTML, which require broken Internet Exploder, designed to interpret those broken pages?
