User Journal 135

Never fails, I post up pictures, get SWARMED with a bunch more. Lots of single numbers became series. Some series were added to, and we have almost 10 more people (including some more females).

Reorganize lists, and get to it. I need to turn off journal messages, again (135 in last JE!).

Now don't give anything away people... wait a bit before giving hints or anything!

Tet's "thumbnail page" is http://www.astradyne.co.uk/tet/slashdot/ but is invalid due to changes (some pictures were moved... single pics that turned series went from NN.jpg to NNa.jpg and NNb.jpg, etc...), so but him to update it if you want that thumbnail action!

did not participate in this one... I had no new pictures available of me, though I have changed my appearance somewhat since the last contest; my sister's hooking me on Queer Eye had an effect...

Re:I guess I will state that I... (1)

He said his sister got him hooked on Queer Eye, not got him on there. :) Though I think it would be cool as hell to get a Slashdotter on that show. Hmmm, should we find someone in the NY area and all start working to get him on the show?

Thursday Night Addendum (1)

(Replicated from the last thread, because I will NOT be ignored!)

#25 -- Amending my vote. Not sol. Saige?

#48 -- Oh my god. You are NOT looking forward to this contest ending, because the Slashdogs will be baying at your door! Oh, and BTW, you look exactly like a prettier version of my (already very pretty) cousin.

#49 -- another 14-year-old. Not the greatest picture, dude.

#50 -- Xerithane? (Definitely hot, BTW.)

#51 -- Someone very wise. This guy *knows*, man.

#52 -- Didn't FK say he was changing his look? In any case, you can shuffle my deck anytime, Cowboy. (Super Caliente! Ay dios mio!)

#53 -- This guy gets around, don't he? Nice eyes.

#54 -- Another Wow. Good lord. These guys aren't going to know what to do with themselves (after they buy new keyboards).

#55 -- Looks like a cuter version of one of my exes, but I'm sorry -- the lit cigarette eliminates hotness potential. If you've quit, you make the list.

So yeah, the chicks all make the hot list (except for me -- I'm decidedly not hot), and many of the guys. I had no idea!!

That is a girl isn't it?

"#50 -- Xerithane? (Definitely hot, BTW.)"

Do you mean Xerithane or the girl?

"#54 -- Another Wow. Good lord. These guys aren't going to know what to do with themselves (after they buy new keyboards)."

Yes. And I mean damn.

"#55 -- Looks like a cuter version of one of my exes, but I'm sorry -- the lit cigarette eliminates hotness potential. If you've quit, you make the list."

But.. only losers quit. Or only quitters lose. Or school something drugs win?

#18 Your picture would be better if you took your shirt off first. ;-) nice eyes btw.

#25 is hot, didn't want to say much first round as the first photo was blurry and low res.

#48 and #54 are hot too. I have NO idea who you or #25 might be.

I'm guessing #50 is probably eglamowski and wife. (the chick is way hot)

#52 makes me wonder if I should submit a photo with my shirt off. ;-)

Oh and #15 is probably Red Warrior.

I know who Bethane probably is but how could you not?

Sure, but judging from #53b he's in the business of clubbing baby seals. (OK, what do you think those things are in the water behind him?)

Thanks for the compliment and one back atchya, Hottieness is your domain oh mistress of the innuendo. The black suit pic was on the release day of MIIB and everybody in the office thought I was a complete nutter. Well, if you're having a hard time with the smoking thing, I have a pretty good cure-all -- except it may result in temporary amnesia.... :-)

I think I'm giving up guessing any more pix, though. Not even knowing who's entered is making my brain ache trying to think of everyone it could possibly be.

Oh, and since you've quit smoking, then I can say that the ex-boyfriend you resemble was, indeed, quite hot. :-)

Welcome to the list, #55.

Ah, yeah, now that I think about it...and dig through some old JEs...yeah, that must be Saige. (Someone dropped a major hint to me about that, and I only now got that hint...)

I stand by my earlier rating of the degree of hotness. :-)

And I also stand by my rating of Cutest Slashdottir as being Kiddo in #6...

Kick-ass job, Tet. You code with beauty.

do you code up the gallery by hand or do you use a script like jigl.pl etc?...Im looking for a simple gallery creator that my wife can use without too much help from me(It makes her cranky to have to resort to asking me for help with the computer and she doesnt like dos window programs like jigl.pl).

and Ill throw some guesses into this post as well as Work and such is keeping my slashdot time down to a bare minimum.

06 -- Bethanie and Kiddo ....BTW except for me -- I'm decidedly not hot..um so not true...but This kinda rant is a pet peeve of mine since all 3 of my sisters do the same thing "Im not Pretty ...Im not hot" yet they are beautiful(and have guys falling all over them), besides u've got a great smile and a hot smile makes a hot woman ..oke now my wife and sisters are all going to kill me (But 22 years of living with 3 sisters and 2 years of living with a wive listening to that can drive anyone over the edge!!! :)

50 -- Must be Xerithane

23 -- Must be CyranoVr - Touche!

and thats all the slashdot time for today

Re:Thumbnails (1)

Tet (2721) | about 11 years ago | (#7124490)

do you code up the gallery by hand or do you use a script like jigl.pl

I used about 10 lines of PHP that I hacked up in a spare few minutes. It's pretty crude, but it works well enough for my needs. If you want to take a look, it's available at http://www.astradyne.co.uk/tet/slashdot/index.phps [astradyne.co.uk] . The thumbnails were generated grabbing the images with:

wget -m -np http://marotti.com/slashdot2/
then resizing them with:
for i in *.jpg; do djpeg "$i" | pnmscale -xysize 150 150 | cjpeg -quality 60 > "thumbs/$i"; done

Re:Thumbnails (1)

dubiousdave (618128) | about 11 years ago | (#7126367)

You might try My Photo Gallery [fuzzymonkey.org] , which is perl-based. Once you install it and give it the top level directory for the photo gallery, it takes care of everything else. If you want to add another album, just create the directory under the top level gallery dir and dump your photos in it.

You're not going to believe this, but it came to me in a dream last night (and baby, I didn't want to wake up!!)

Obviously there is just a preponderance of straight males in the reading audience, because everyone's going with the bouncer jokes and totally missing the *real* joke of the imagery.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you #57, the infamous Em Emalb!! And for once, he's watching *YOU* do the sucking!!!

....Bethanie....
One thing, though -- there's already a ring on the left hand finger. So if it's not Em, the joke doesn't work as well. But still -- that's what the angle makes ME think of!

Oh well, just in case anybody is still serious, I don't think that #57 looks like Em. #57 doesn't look like any famous actor that I have seen.

Anonymous Coward | about 11 years ago | (#7125092)

1) Thank god for the pics b, c, and d. That first one has gone terribly wrong. Nice smile in d, though it doesn't look like it was really meant.
2) The power of stoicism.
3) I love looking at peoples' eyes, says so much about them... why would you hide yours?
4) Wow, I wouldn't expect b and c to be the same person. There's just something that looks different. Attractive, especially in photo a.
5) Looks like a great dad for some kids. And has a great face for managment.
6) Awww... what a cute daughter, bethanie! (could it be anyone else??)
7) "Dammit, I forgot today was school picture day!" Looks like you want the guy who's dating the girl you're interested in...
8) What's the thumbs-up for? Signifying you're a-ok to dive into the horrid mess behind you? :) Regardless, b is my favorite of the three - you look good in it.
9) Just makes me think of a photo someone would take for their christmas cards, where they announce they're spending months on a mission trip to central america or something like that...
10) Looks like the power being used to light up that shirt is getting you a bit powered-up also. You look ready to run a marathon with that expression!
11) Trying to hide from the picture? Don't be afraid, no reason not to put that face on film!
12) No offense, but all I can think of due to the first pic is a drunk frat boy. :)
13) Intense eyes... nobody could ESCape that look.
14) Mmm, food. Makes me hungry. Looks like a guy I'd like to have as a friend.
15) Gotta be a marine... have the look (appearance and attitude) down flat.
16) What a cutie... love to sit and play with that hair.
17) Nice looking clean-cut guy... but more hiding the eyes! Why oh why?
18) Wow the eyes... and (in a Willow voice)wow, lookee those...
19) Looks like someone worthy of corruption... just to sweet and innocent here.
20) Food. Hungry again. Noodles look good. Guy does too.
21) Nice snowboardin' moves. Glasses again, damnit!
22) Looks like someone's getting breakfast ready to have energy to make it through the day's LAN party.
23) Please don't hurt me mister fencer! I should know who this is, I've read their journal...
24) The uncle teaching all his nieces and nephews how to be more computer savvy than their parents.
25) Someone got lucky - the bridesmaid dress doesn't look nearly as bad as many do.
26) Huh? You talkin to me?
27) Yeah, as someone else said, definitely has the cool-as-hell DJ look here. Yo, DJ! Show me the cool music!
28) Ack, too much shadow here.
29) Very friendly eyes. One of those guys that just everyone can't help but like, methinks.
30) Very intense look for a very intense room.
31) I hope this was taken many, many years ago.
32) Even more shadow here! I can't see you!
33) Reminds me of someone, but I just can't place it, and it's bugging me.
34) I would have never guessed it was you, thanks for letting us know. :) Looks like a cool guy to have around.
35) I like the eyes. Probably quite the joker. You'd do well with your hair odd colors, I suspect.
36) Whoa, when did the drugs get into my system?
37) Wow, cute couple all around. I bet the family is/was constantly asking when the big day is?
38) Cheerful yet intimidating - any girl feels safe with a guy like this around.
39) The quiet college professor relaxing in his home, preparing the next day's science lesson.
40) I bet mommy and daddy are proud of their little princess, even if they were accidentally transported to merry olde england...
41) "How much longer do I have to hold this, dad, my pants are falling down!" "Until you cut that hair and join the army, just like I did. And call me sir!"
42) More shadow, hiding the eyes - but doing it because you're a cultural revolutionary, rebelling against the oppressive slashdot photo contest culture, I see.
43) Lots of sexiness going on here...
44) The aliens are meeting with their secret leader on Earth, discussing how to divide up all the girls he's attracting for their experiments on the effects of beer.
45) No, not sunglasses again... I'd love to get a look at those eyes.
46) The power of industrial music. But I suspect it's more look than anything else...
47) Looks like a sweetheart... like the hair.
48) Ooh, lookin good... especially in that dress. Go nuts, guys.
49) Sorry person, this is not a good picture. Can't even tell for certain if it's a guy or girl here.
50) Ooh, another contender for the sexy couple contest.
51) "You talkin' to me?"
52) Sunglasses and shadow... bet the eyes increase the sexy factor already here.
53) Looks like a world traveler, either taking or wanting to take some woman on a trip of their lifetime...
54) I... uh... um... wow.
55) First, I shall ignore the ick factor of the 'b' picture (smoking stinks :) C makes me think Matrix Agent, but cooler than any of the ones in the movie. Got the style goin' on, definitely. But at least the stormtroopers are defending Neo and company.
56) OK, why is my college math instructure riding a kiddie horse, and looking like he's quoting Plato in the process? This is definitely a winner for the "most unexpected picture" award.
57) Quite attractive, but I get the feeling I'm like 3 feet shorter than this guy and it throws things well off. I didn't become like 7 again when I wasn't looking, did I?
57)

Okay, my memory of the last contest is a bit *lacking*. Some people look familiar, but I don't quite can put names on them.

#6 - Of course, that is a giveaway. My guess is that this picture was not to show off herself, but to show of her daughter.
#11 - Not as giveaway as you might think. I have an idea, but he didn't post anything in these journals. So I'm in doubt.
#18 - Definately a giveaway... But you have to admit that this pic is waaaaay better than the one last time
#47 - Yeah... it should be a giveway. I distinctly remember that guy from the last contest. Alas, I forgot who he is! Damnit!
#53(e) - Doesn't look familiar to me... I don't know why you mention the (e) specifically. They all look the same to me.

eugene ts wong (231154) | about 11 years ago | (#7130423)

I think that #55 deserves a thread all on his own, because he's posted so many pictures that could be clues to who he could be.

Here's a list of his pictures: 55a [marotti.com] , 55b [marotti.com] , 55c [marotti.com] , & 55d [marotti.com] .

To get us started, I'm going to relist all of the clues.
* German mug in photo 1.
* European street sign in photo 1
* foreign [as in not Canadian & American] food in photo 2
* sense of humour in photo 3 & 4

Location in Photo 4 (1)

eugene ts wong (231154) | about 11 years ago | (#7130472)

@ 1st, I thought that photo 4 was taken @ the front of an airport. If you look behind the left storm trooper, you'll see a sign that a begger would use, on the side walk. In between the black suited guy & #55, you'll see some people sitting on the side walk against the building. I now speculate that this is a shopping mall, or a very public place. It kind of reminds me of when I attended Expo 86, but this doesn't seem to have many festivities in the background. 1 reason that it might not be a shopping mall, is that there are no big signs outside the windows. There are no doors, except @ the main entrance. Is this some kind of tourist attraction? Perhaps a movie theatre surrounded by offices? I must say, that I am a bit surprised @ how North American the architecture appears. If you look @ the very right, I think that you can spot a bus. If this is true, then the passengers would be getting off on the right side of the bus.

Wait a minute! If you look in reflection of the windows on the left side, I think you might see what appears to be palm trees. Does this mean that he is in the southern US or Europe?

I've got my mind set on the US.

Questions? Comments?

Clothing Choices (1)

eugene ts wong (231154) | about 11 years ago | (#7130564)

In all, but photo 3, he is wearing floral shirts, that aren't supposed to be tucked in.

This is kind of insignificant, but we can only see a ring in photo 1.

Notice his watch in 2 & 4. It appears to have sports type of band that probably uses velcro, thus implying the active type of guy. It's on his left hand. Is he right handed? He's drinking beer with his right hand. On the other hand [no pun intended], his cigarette is slightly on the left in 2. Does he smoke using his left hand?

He wears a suit in 3, but I don't think that he normally wears it. His tie knot seems to have been made in 4 folds [can't remember the name of the knot]. I speculate that most people who often wear suits tend to use the Full Windsor or Half Windsor [correct names?]. I normally use the Half Windsor, because it makes the shape of the knot even & symetrical, yet it isn't as big as the Full Windsor. I can't see for sure, but the pants seem to have been folded up. The shoulders seem to sit unevenly. I'm just speculating, but is it partially made of cotton? That shirt appears to be the type that you might wear with Khakis. I honestly don't know anything about the suit. I'm just guessing to rationalize my speculations. So no offense intended. :^)

Notice the use of the pockets in 2 & 4. His left shirt pocket has food in photo 2. His pants pockets are full of stuff. This implies to me a man who is very practical. He does what it takes to get the job done. A Republican? A Windows user? ;^) Just kidding about being a republican & Windows user, because I honestly wouldn't know. Seriously though, I get the impression that although he looks cool to me, he isn't the type who tries to figure out what is in style, & he wouldn't buy stuff just for the sake of keeping up with each season.

Misc. (1)

eugene ts wong (231154) | about 11 years ago | (#7130627)

It could be my imagination, but in 2 he seems to have some kind of ribbon on his shoulder coming down the front. Does this imply that we was @ a party? That would explain the hand full of food. Also, look in the window on the left. Is that a cultural hat? Notice the screens on the windows. That doesn't tell us a whole lot, but I get the impression that it must be warm enough that they keep the windows open for significant periods of time. The plant behind him seems to be tropical.

I speculate that he is on a front porch in 2. Does anybody know much about the style of windows? Is he in the deep south? Again, draw your attention to the screen window on the left. Look @ the top of the screen. See the window on the other side of the screen? Doesn't this imply that he is outside? Now look to the right, behind his left arm. Isn't that carpet just behind his elbow? For comparison, look @ the carpet in 3. It looks the same to me. I honestly don't know.

Notice on the right side of 3, there is that tiny bit of black. Is this because he is posing with another guy in the original photo? It would be consistant with photo 4.

C appears to be San Francisco County [page down to "Range"] [mountainwatch.org] . If you look through the photo galleries, then you should see that the terrain C & the gallery photos are very similar.

In picture C: Can't you guys read??? The sign says: "Twin Peaks Native Plant Restoration". Now where in the world would you find "Twin Peaks". It even is consistent with pics b and d.

Greetings from Contestant 53.

Re:Clues (1)

turg (19864) | about 11 years ago | (#7131988)

I did a web search and found a "Native Plant Restoration" at a location called "Twin Peaks" in California. I guess you're saying that's not the one?

Re:Clues (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 11 years ago | (#7132575)

Of course this is in Californina: all pictures, except a are in California. If I'd say where pic a has been taken, I give myself away ever more because it's about a month old. The picture with the sign is indeed "Twin Peaks in San Francisco". So, I am saying: "Yes it is the one". I took the pic with the sign to prove that I had been there. I couldn't take a picture of the skyline because it was very foggy that day. I walked up there all the way, most people are just lazy and take the car.

Where would we find Twin Peaks? I didn't know, because I don't come from the US! I honestly thought that the photos were of Europe, & that you were European. But because of the Google search, I now know the truth. Unknot panties please! ;^)

US Centric indeed.... (0)

There is an expression, "Don't get your panties in a knot!", or something like that. I was just implying that #35 has got his panties in a knot. Even though it's directed @ women, people use it for guys too, just a joke. I said that because he seemed to be surprised that nobody knew where it was.

I watched a few scenes from a tv show called, "Twin Peaks". You can trust me that nobody looked like they came from San Francisco. I think that they came from northern Canada.

Besides, it's not uncommon to find locations around the world with the same name.

HAHAHAHA!
You guys are WAY over thinking on this one!

First of all, by far, I'm *not* a receptionist.

Secondly, it was taken while visiting my sister for approximately 2 weeks.

Re:#4 - KFC (1)

jawtheshark (198669) | about 11 years ago | (#7133212)

Ah, but what country?

Germany, I could recognise those from farther than that. Apart from that that is a mercedes which is german, then comes a Ford Focus which isn't very popular in the US, and the last car is most probably an Audi A4 break, which is again German. The Mercedes has a license plate that starts with "H" which indicates Hamburg if I recall correctly.

Poulet frites aux Kentucky?

Only in France. My guess would more be "Fritiertes Kentucky Hun"

They aren't all that popular where I am, either... :-P

and the last car is most probably an Audi A4 break, which is again German.

Uh? I don't see an Audi in the photo...

The Mercedes has a license plate that starts with "H" which indicates Hamburg if I recall correctly.

...and, for the record, I drive a Rover. ;-)

And I would like to point out that there are other European plates [licenseplates.tv] that look similar to the German ones (black type on white with blue EU flag).

I won't say they aren't. Germans typically prefer VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Focus is for low-income people.

Uh? I don't see an Audi in the photo...

You only see two cars clearly in the picture... Next to the focus (to the left) is another car. While I don't claim to know everything about cars, that one looks like an Audi A4 Break or a Passat Break. Both which are german. You just see a very small part of it, but that's enough for me.

And I would like to point out that there are other European plates that look similar to the German ones (black type on white with blue EU flag).

I am European. Don't you think I know? These *are* german plates. Besides, the plates on the site are obsolete. Luxembourg changed it's plate scheme two months ago. ;-)

You helped me buddy! (1)

jawtheshark (198669) | about 11 years ago | (#7137250)

That link you gave me has been useful! Look at picture #1c. It is a European style license plate. Not only that but only 3 can match according to the site: Great Britain, Lithuania, and Sweden! Now, I rule out Sweden and Lithuania because I know of no slashdotters in that country.

Conclusion: picture taken in Great Britain, which already rules out a lot of slashdotters. Now, I only need to find out if there any residents of the United Kingdom that have long hair.

#17 is probably married or is dating. Notice the black shadow on the left of the picture. Notice how he leans, & how he isn't in the centre of the picture, but is close to the centre. I speculate that he cut it in half before he submitted it.

I can't, but what about the decorations in the background on the left side? I ask because I wonder about the 1 on the top. Does that appear to be something a bachelor might have? I'm just guessing.

#22, what OS do you use? If you have more than 1, would you please them all & the distribution(s)?

Thank your for the info. Went over to your site at once and 'lo and behold, there is a picture of you! Problem is I have a hard time matching you! I first though of #9, but that guy has more hair than you (no offense meant, I'm losing my hair too!), and the nose seems to be a bit more broader. Also the ears seem to have a different shape.

The others just don't match very well, apart from #39, which could be you if you shaved and gained a little weight (again, no offense meant, we all get older)

Apart from that.... why am I not linked from your "My Links" page. If I wen't a nice guy, I would be offended now ;-)

All in all, I have not made my choice yet... You're a hard nut to crack!

Some more ideas (1)

jawtheshark (198669) | about 11 years ago | (#7133357)

#10 I recognise that desk! This person has participated in the machine setup photo contest. If only I recalled who hosted that, in no time I would know who this is!

#12b is taken on the Golden Gate Bridge.

#13 Love the T-Shirt dude! No idea who you are though.

#14 American-style house in the background.

#20 looks like the guy with the silly hat in the last contest. If only I'd recall who that was!

#28 is one of my favourite Journal Entry Writers. I'm pretty sure of that... Bloody name, but nice guy! ;-)

#42 was also in the last contest. I should have saved that damned page from last contest!

#47 Same remark as above....

#50 Now who has an asian girlfriend and is a good looking fella? I do know someone like that!

#54 I know who she is, but my guess is that *nobody* will guess her right!

#55b Architecture in background is American. The candy he holds is not European. This pic has been taken in the US.

That's it... Feel free to make remarks....

What is your definition of "very well"? If you mean: "did I ever see her in person", then the reply is "no". It definately is not spirit00, because spirit00 isn't *that* pretty, besides she doesn't compete this year.

I think that you just gave it away. I honestly didn't recognize him. Maybe the hat kept throwing me off.

I am not 100% sure, that is the whole point. I compared with the pics that I have, and he is the most likely candidate... The hat is indeed throwing me off too. For the moment, I have decided that #28 is him though.

jawtheshark (198669) | about 11 years ago | (#7137134)

Thoughts about #44 (1)

jawtheshark (198669) | about 11 years ago | (#7137208)

Number #44 is a rather interesting picture. I first thought it was taken in the UK, because of the english style-pints. (Looks like nice beer by the way). Also, see that the glasses are on real beer-pads (or whatever you call those). In the US normally beer is served on some kind of napkin.

I still think this is in the US, for two reasons: two of the glasses are ice-water. I have never seen ice-water served, except in the US (of course, I don't claim to know the world). Also, look at the cars: the red one on the left looks non-European to me, and seems to have a US style license place. The other car looks like an SUV, but I'm not sure.

Conclusion: picture taken in the US in a English/Scottish pub. A nice way to mislead people, indeed ;-)
