Journal FortKnox's Journal: Updated Contest 135

Never fails, I post up pictures, get SWARMED with a bunch more. Lots of single numbers became series. Some series were added to, and we have almost 10 more people (including some more females).

Reorganize lists, and get to it. I need to turn off journal messages, again (135 in last JE!).

Now don't give anything away people... wait a bit before giving hints or anything!

Once again, the link is marotti.com/slashdot2

Tet's "thumbnail page" is http://www.astradyne.co.uk/tet/slashdot/ but is invalid due to changes (some pictures were moved... single pics that turned series went from NN.jpg to NNa.jpg and NNb.jpg, etc...), so but him to update it if you want that thumbnail action!

  • did not participate in this one... I had no new pictures available of me, though I have changed my appearance somewhat since the last contest; my sister's hooking me on Queer Eye had an effect...

  • (Replicated from the last thread, because I will NOT be ignored!)

#25 -- Amending my vote. Not sol. Saige?

#48 -- Oh my god. You are NOT looking forward to this contest ending, because the Slashdogs will be baying at your door! Oh, and BTW, you look exactly like a prettier version of my (already very pretty) cousin.

#49 -- another 14-year-old. Not the greatest picture, dude.

#50 -- Xerithane? (Definitely hot, BTW.)

#51 -- Someone very wise. This guy *knows*, man.

    #52 -- Didn't FK say he was changing h
    • yeah thanks to my homie red5, I pretty much was able to make the first ham-handed, idiotic pass at #54.

in some warped dimension, I rule.
    • #18 Your picture would be better if you took your shirt off first. ;-) nice eyes btw.

#25 is hot, didn't want to say much first round as the first photo was blurry and low res.

#48 and #54 are hot too. I have NO idea who you or #25 might be.

I'm guessing #50 is probably eglamowski and wife. (the chick is way hot)

#52 makes me wonder if I should submit a photo with my shirt off. ;-)

Oh and #15 is probably Red Warrior.

I know who Bethane probably is but how could you not?
    • #53 -- This guy gets around, don't he? Nice eyes.

Sure, but judging from #53b he's in the business of clubbing baby seals. (OK, what do you think those things are in the water behind him?)

    • #25 -- Amending my vote. Not sol. Saige?

Ah, yeah, now that I think about it...and dig through some old JEs...yeah, that must be Saige. (Someone dropped a major hint to me about that, and I only now got that hint...)

I stand by my earlier rating of the degree of hotness. :-)

And I also stand by my rating of Cutest Slashdottir as being Kiddo in #6...

      Cheers,

      Ethelred

  • Tet's "thumbnail page" is http://www.astradyne.co.uk/tet/slashdot/ but is invalid

Fixed. Even though I'm still drunk from last night (my company just bought another, and they had a party with a free bar all night to celebrate).

    • You need an excuse to get drunk???? What kind of man are you anyway? ;-)

      Ow, and #54...... *drool* :-D

    • Kick-ass job, Tet. You code with beauty.
    • do you code up the gallery by hand or do you use a script like jigl.pl etc?...Im looking for a simple gallery creator that my wife can use without too much help from me(It makes her cranky to have to resort to asking me for help with the computer and she doesnt like dos window programs like jigl.pl).

and Ill throw some guesses into this post as well as Work and such is keeping my slashdot time down to a bare minimum.

06 -- Bethanie and Kiddo ....BTW except for me -- I'm decidedly not hot..um so not true
      • do you code up the gallery by hand or do you use a script like jigl.pl

I used about 10 lines of PHP that I hacked up in a spare few minutes. It's pretty crude, but it works well enough for my needs. If you want to take a look, it's available at http://www.astradyne.co.uk/tet/slashdot/index.php s [astradyne.co.uk]. The thumbnails were generated grabbing the images with:

        wget -m -np http://marotti.com/slashdot2/

        then resizing them with:

        for i in *.jpg; do djpeg "$i" | pnmscale -xysize 150 150 | cjpeg -quality 60 > "thu

      • You might try My Photo Gallery [fuzzymonkey.org], which is perl-based. Once you install it and give it the top level directory for the photo gallery, it takes care of everything else. If you want to add another album, just create the directory under the top level gallery dir and dump your photos in it.
        • interesting, but what she really wants is a GUI based program that she points towards the pictures and clicks a "publish" button, I just havent had the time to research for one or write one as work is consuming all mental & temporal resources at the moment! but thanks
          • Well, you could just set the document root for the photo gallery to the directory where the digital camera dumps the photos. Then the gallery would be generated automagically. If she wants a GUI to add directories to publish and to do other setup, the package includes another CGI for that. It's a pretty slick package.
      • Thanks, KMAPS.

But I stand by my earlier statement. I may be many things, but hot I am not (except when Matthew McConaughey bothers me!) :-)

        ....Bethanie....
    • Dang! What company is that!!!

Well nevermind. I don't want to get sloshed with the people I work with. Its bad enough to deal with them 8-10 hours a day.

  • Which one is Em?
    • Hmmm...I think I've been reading Slashdot long enough to answer: The one who sucks! I don't know this Em guy very well, but with all that sucking, he must be popular with the ladies! ;-)

    • You're not going to believe this, but it came to me in a dream last night (and baby, I didn't want to wake up!!)

Obviously there is just a preponderance of straight males in the reading audience, because everyone's going with the bouncer jokes and totally missing the *real* joke of the imagery.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you #57, the infamous Em Emalb!! And for once, he's watching *YOU* do the sucking!!!

      ....Bethanie....

      • Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you #57, the infamous Em Emalb!!
        Maybe you're still joking, but...

        Oh, yuck.

Oh well, just in case anybody is still serious, I don't think that #57 looks like Em. #57 doesn't look like any famous actor that I have seen.
  • My guesses were almost entirely wrong in the last contest but this time people are giving much more away in the comments so I might do better. I already know more correct answers than I got in my final guesses last time.

  • At tip for everyone: #4 is a giveaway! I remember having seen that picture on someone's web page. I know who that is now :-)
  • I got no guesses, but I got captions [slashdot.org].
  • Serving the pictures is complete [master-developer.com]

Just gotta get the voting part finished...

  • I think that #55 deserves a thread all on his own, because he's posted so many pictures that could be clues to who he could be.

    Here's a list of his pictures: 55a [marotti.com], 55b [marotti.com], 55c [marotti.com], & 55d [marotti.com].

To get us started, I'm going to relist all of the clues.
    * German mug in photo 1.
    * European street sign in photo 1
    * foreign [as in not Canadian & American] food in photo 2
    * sense of humour in photo 3 & 4
    • @ 1st, I thought that photo 4 was taken @ the front of an airport. If you look behind the left storm trooper, you'll see a sign that a begger would use, on the side walk. In between the black suited guy & #55, you'll see some people sitting on the side walk against the building. I now speculate that this is a shopping mall, or a very public place. It kind of reminds me of when I attended Expo 86, but this doesn't seem to have many festivities in the background. 1 reason that it might not be a shopping m
      • Wait a minute! If you look in reflection of the windows on the left side, I think you might see what appears to be palm trees.

Dude. You're forgetting somewhere else in the US where there are MANY palm trees. Southern U.S., on the LEFT coast. Architecture is consistent with this locale, as well.

        ....Bethanie....
        • Dude. You're forgetting somewhere else in the US where there are MANY palm trees. Southern U.S., on the LEFT coast. Architecture is consistent with this locale, as well.

Huh? I'm not forgetting the left coast. There are palm trees in Canada's southern left coast, so I'm aware of the south western US, as well.

I skimmed through my comment above, & it seems that you are forgetting that "the south" means all of the south. Maybe I missed something in what I said above. Maybe I misinterpret what you said.

    • In all, but photo 3, he is wearing floral shirts, that aren't supposed to be tucked in.

This is kind of insignificant, but we can only see a ring in photo 1.

Notice his watch in 2 & 4. It appears to have sports type of band that probably uses velcro, thus implying the active type of guy. It's on his left hand. Is he right handed? He's drinking beer with his right hand. On the other hand [no pun intended], his cigarette is slightly on the left in 2. Does he smoke using his left hand?

He wears a suit in 3
    • I posted this elsewhere, but to participate in the appropriate thread, my guess is that #55 is spumoni fettucini.

      ....Bethanie....
    • It could be my imagination, but in 2 he seems to have some kind of ribbon on his shoulder coming down the front. Does this imply that we was @ a party? That would explain the hand full of food. Also, look in the window on the left. Is that a cultural hat? Notice the screens on the windows. That doesn't tell us a whole lot, but I get the impression that it must be warm enough that they keep the windows open for significant periods of time. The plant behind him seems to be tropical.

I speculate that he is on

C appears to be San Francisco County [page down to "Range"] [mountainwatch.org]. If you look through the photo galleries, then you should see that the terrain C & the gallery photos are very similar.

    • 8. Appears to be a bachelor's degree gown
Does that yellow line going around his neck mean that he graduated with honours?
    • #17 is probably married or is dating. Notice the black shadow on the left of the picture. Notice how he leans, & how he isn't in the centre of the picture, but is close to the centre. I speculate that he cut it in half before he submitted it.
    • 22. Can anyone recognize the brand of anything on the counter?
I can't, but what about the decorations in the background on the left side? I ask because I wonder about the 1 on the top. Does that appear to be something a bachelor might have? I'm just guessing.

#22, what OS do you use? If you have more than 1, would you please them all & the distribution(s)?
      • #22 Has a bag of Millstone Coffee on the counter, the dish soap looks to be "Dawn" and I think the espresso maker is a Krups.

Also he appears to have a Rocky Horror shirt on.

    • Thank your for the info. Went over to your site at once and 'lo and behold, there is a picture of you! Problem is I have a hard time matching you! I first though of #9, but that guy has more hair than you (no offense meant, I'm losing my hair too!), and the nose seems to be a bit more broader. Also the ears seem to have a different shape.

The others just don't match very well, apart from #39, which could be you if you shaved and gained a little weight (again, no offense meant, we all get older)

      Apart f

      • Apart from that.... why am I not linked from your "My Links" page. If I wen't a nice guy, I would be offended now ;-)

Well, it would be good if you got off your behind and updated it. :-) No offence, but 'last updated 10th September 1999'?

Oh, and for your information I'm losing those pounds, not gaining them.

        MT.
        • Ergo: You are not #39

Sorry, didn't see that the last update was 1999. However, I do not think that andr0meda had his domain in 1999. As far as I know, I had a domain before him (we are real life friends, fyi). So... Uhm... Did you update that list without updating the timestamp?

  • I'm in this time. If only to throw some people off the track.
  • #10 I recognise that desk! This person has participated in the machine setup photo contest. If only I recalled who hosted that, in no time I would know who this is!

#12b is taken on the Golden Gate Bridge.

#13 Love the T-Shirt dude! No idea who you are though.

#14 American-style house in the background.

#20 looks like the guy with the silly hat in the last contest. If only I'd recall who that was!

    • #54 I know who she is, but my guess is that *nobody* will guess her right!
Do you know her very well?
#28 is one of my favourite Journal Entry Writers. I'm pretty sure of that... Bloody name, but nice guy! ;-)
I think that you just gave it away. I honestly didn't recognize him. Maybe the hat kept throwing me off.
      • Do you know her very well?

What is your definition of "very well"? If you mean: "did I ever see her in person", then the reply is "no". It definately is not spirit00, because spirit00 isn't *that* pretty, besides she doesn't compete this year.

I think that you just gave it away. I honestly didn't recognize him. Maybe the hat kept throwing me off.

I am not 100% sure, that is the whole point. I compared with the pics that I have, and he is the most likely candidate... The hat is indeed throwing me

        • It definately is not spirit00, because spirit00 isn't *that* pretty, besides she doesn't compete this year.
Oh okay. That was what I was asking because that was my guess. Now I know better.

FortKnox had better hurry. I'm getting a bit curious.
    • I was mistaken. He didn't take part in the machine photo contest [systemsalchemy.org]. I mistook the pink pastel wall with the green pastel wall. So forget that lead... *grmbl*
      • Number #44 is a rather interesting picture. I first thought it was taken in the UK, because of the english style-pints. (Looks like nice beer by the way). Also, see that the glasses are on real beer-pads (or whatever you call those). In the US normally beer is served on some kind of napkin.

I still think this is in the US, for two reasons: two of the glasses are ice-water. I have never seen ice-water served, except in the US (of course, I don't claim to know the world). Also, look at the cars: the

        • It's definitely in America -- there is a red American-style No Parking sign behind his head. Also, the condiments on the table are a bit more typical of an American restaurant, along with the iced water.

The glasses are Guinness glasses, so yes, it must be a British or Irish pub. However, I think they are drinking Newcastle Brown Ale or Kilkenny -- it's not Guinness and it's not a bitter or lager/pils, either. Some kind of ale.

So perhaps it's a Brit or Irishman in America (Cyberdyne?), or at least an Ame

          • Yes, I also noted the condiments (Never call "ketchup" a condiment in my vicinity please. That is the one sauce that shouldn't exist!)

Oh, and they're called "coasters" in America and "beer mats" in the UK -- not "beer-pads". ;-)

As you guessed my english is far from perfect, so thank you for the update. I'll try to remember...

            • "As you guessed my english is far from perfect, so thank you for the update. I'll try to remember..."

Personally, on slashdot I use good English usage as an indicator that someone is not American. *sigh* Besides, that was just a local distinction. In other English-speaking places, they may have yet more names. Your English is excellent, it just doesn't sound American.

              • I use good English usage as an indicator that someone is not American.

Uhm, well, I wouldn't be that critical. A good few Americans around here have excellent spelling.

Your English is excellent, it just doesn't sound American.

I'll take that as a compliment... Even though, you have never actually heard my English. You might be in for a surprise ;-)

                • Even though, you have never actually heard my English. You might be in for a surprise ;-)

Get me a nice job in Lux, or visit me in Austin, and I'll find out. :-) I'm sure it's better than my Spanish/French/German/etc. I think I can successfully order a meal and a drink and find the toilet in any of those. Beyond that, it gets dodgy. Of course, how much more do you really need?

                  • Get me a nice job in Lux

Shouldn't be too hard [monster.lu]. Contrary to popular belief the job market isn't dead everywhere. Yeah, it's a bit tougher, but not as bad as everywhere. I myself have thought of becoming an Unix admin, but I'll stick with being a Java2 developper for now. After all, my salary isn't that bad...

Of course, how much more do you really need?

Calm down and step away from the flamethrower. It was a joke.

                    • As someone that talks 5 different languages every day, I refuse to reply this question. I have had far too much flamewars about the topic here on slashdot.

English, German, French and what are the other 2?

As to the other part other than getting laid, getting fed, getting drunk, and finding the bathroom about covers the important stuff. ;-)
                    • I did exactly that by not going into rant-mode... ;-)
                    • Dutch, which is my mother tongue. Finally Luxembourgish, which is a language spoken by only half a million people. It has officially been declared a language in the eighties (IIRC), so I still count it. :-) I need it every day though...
            • As you guessed my english is far from perfect, so thank you for the update. I'll try to remember...

Hey, is anyone's English perfect? ;-)

Your English is at least as good as many native speakers...like Dave said, you can tell who the non-Americans are by their good grammar and spelling. ;-)

              Cheers,

              Ethelred

        • I still think this is in the US, for two reasons: two of the glasses are ice-water. I have never seen ice-water served, except in the US (of course, I don't claim to know the world). Also, look at the cars: the red one on the left looks non-European to me, and seems to have a US style license place.

Actually, they serve ice water in Canada too. You usually order it once you sit down & are given menus. Some people go without the ice water, & order some other drink.

Regarding the red car on the left, I

          • You usually order it once you sit down & are given menus.

Don't you guys now " aperitif [epicurious.com]"? What kind of savages are you? ;-) As a matter of fact, I know Americans do not know the concept -I had a pretty hard time to explain it to spirit00-, and I must assume the same for (at least the english part of) Canada.

Beware: In Europe (Okay, the parts I know) you *never* order ice-water. First of all, it is very unlikely that they have it in the first place and second it would be considered rude. You ar

    • I don't think that's candy...that's fireworks, I'm pretty sure. The long flat box in his breast pocket looks to be sparklers. The blue ball in his hand is probably a cherry bomb that he's lighting with his cigarette.

Other than that, I also think the picture was taken in America -- screen windows in particular aren't something you see often in Europe, at least not in Germany.

#54 I know who she is, but my guess is that *nobody* will guess her right!

Well, how about a hint? ;-)

OK, I know it's not SW

      • Yes, I also looked at the windows. It is America. You are right about the fireworks, I see the fuse of the bomb now. However, the packaging of the fireworks still looks very un-European. This together with the windows tell us it is the US.

Also for pic 22: same style windows... Thus US, but that's all I can deduce from that pic.

Well, how about a hint? ;-)

No. Sorry... I promised not to. I can only tell you one thing, and that should say you enough: she is a lurker.

        Me #34? Might be.... Won't

      • Based on SD's hint, #25 is not her. From my memory of the last contest, I don't see KshGoddess in the set so far. I think that Saige is #25, which would leave SD as 48, 49, or 54. It's remotely possible that #49 is LG (old/bad photo?), but I don't think so (I don't remember her photo from the last contest as well).

On 55b, I think that you're right about the location of the picture. #55 does have a vaguely European (British?) look, but I'm not sure that can be relied upon.
  • Well, actually, it is 99% finished [dyndns.dk]. The beta testers complained that grouped photos were all voted seperately when they should be voted together. Fixing that should be as simple as adding a few more lines to a stored proc. I will try to add that feature Monday afternoon, but seeing as how Mondays are Reporting Days, we'll see. It will not matter, as this function can be adjusted at any time and all previous votes will be maintained.

The only think lacking is the 50 or so names of the people in the pictures.
