Journal Organized Konfusion's Journal: My computer might have crashed. 10

Just tried to "remote desktop" to my home machine.

My computer has crashed for the first time since I have been at university. Either that or the cable company has cut me off for constant downloading for four weeks saturating my 600kb/s connection.

Oh well, I'll find out when I go home tommorrow.

My computer might have crashed.

  • how do you tell a 2k pro or a XP pro box to listen to remote desktop requests... is there a option in a control panel that I'm not aware of?
  • PCAnywhere has really improved in recent years and I really like it. Gotomypc I've heard has things like spyware and costs $20 USD a month, so I never looked into it. I wouldn't trust the Microsoft remote agents as far as I could throw them and I admin a Windows 2000 network ;) I have not used any other software, so I feel I can't comment on other types.
    • terminal services aka remote desktop.

from the years since w2k first introduced ts until now there has never been an exploit for it!

Anyway my computer didn't crash, the lease on my ip ran out and the isp's DHCP server was not responding so it assigned itself a funky 169.*.*
      * Ip adress. I was afraid the linux zealots would flame me but I had nothing to fear all along ;-)

At times like this, I smugly think how much nicer using SSH is with a nice powerful command line interface, and not having to put up with a jerky remote desktop :-)
    • try it I dare you, I used to be a tightVNC user but found that useable until I was introduced to terminal services. I fell in love!!! SSH is for servers, my home comp is my baby. I need to *see* that its ok once in a while.
      • If you're a Windows user, there's OpenSSH for windows too (including sshd). IIRC it's at http://lexa.mckenna.edu

Unfortunately, Windows doesn't have a particularly good command line, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (and they have improved command line administration a bit, at least you can now change the routing table etc. via the command line).
        • OpenSSH/Cygwin is ok but I don't see the point trying to use antiword somefile.doc > less to read a huge word file on the command line, when I could just use word itslef and keep all the pretty formatting!!

I use mappoint alot through TS, wouldn't really work on a command line.

Another use is porn browsing which I can't do through the university network. ASCII porn ain't that great!
          • If you learn how to use SSH properly, you CAN do porn browsing through your uni network. Learn the commandline well, and how to use port forwarding, and you can make your uni's firewall totally irrelevant. Don't get wrapped up in TS and GUIs, figure out how networks really work :-)

I've used SSH to melt the most restrictive firewalls in existence (no packet routing, only HTTP via proxy...HTTPS connect is your friend).
