After LG's 'bridge burning', I've been a bit perturbed. A bit mad at some accusations, a bit mad at criticisms on volunteer work, but really mad I didn't get hollared at.

Just as SW said. Its nice when someone gets so perturbed to actually give their real opinion of you. Helps you be better and check yourself to make sure you aren't pissing people off. On the other hand, you shouldn't have to change for others. After LG's 'bridge burning', I've been a bit perturbed. So I guess it comes down to what do you hate about me? AC if you must (you won't lose points from me if you don't. I take constructive criticism very well). Anywho, go ahead and lemmie have it.

Feel free to comment on other people too (BTW - a warning. Don't read the comments if you are afraid someone might make a comment on you).

As a psycologist would say: This is a safe place. Don't link to it or anything. Just lets get all this crap out.

BTW - People think the 'mass exodus' that was hinted at in LG's JE means that someone is writing a site that's similar to here where they will go. No, I am not writing the site, and no, I have no idea about it at all. I'm as clueless (or worse) than you. Would I participate? Sure. Would I think it'd succeed? Nope. Adding another site for people to read usually results in about 60-80% dropoff of readership (people forget to go to the new site, eventually). Oh, and, no, I'm not leaving. That should answer all the questions that people are askin of me.

No problems with you. Nope. Nothing at all.

And for the most part, no problems with anyone. If I avoid the journals of a few "death to all liberal" types, I don't have much in the way of worries, other than one person's "look at us poor persecuted Christians in America" commentary...

It still exists (hell, I already have tomcat on and ready to go), but it will never become a slashdot clone again. In fact, I have no idea what to do with it, which is why it doesn't have any content, yet.

You need to leverage some synergy to let you think outside the box, so you can produce content for your site at a loss, but make it up in volume.

Or maybe you could just make hashpot.org - "No Moderators on Crack here!".

Sorry for this pointless post. I now realise how utterly stupid and devoid of useful content it is :-/. It must be the prednisolone talking.

awesome move! First of all, you get points for even starting this journal! My complaint about you is that you don't hang out more often. But being that we are in different states, I'll let it slide! ;) (and since I was they guy who pretty muched missed the SamThaButcha hang out in DC (save for 15 minutes) I shouldn't be talkin'!)

on a more serious note, in regards to your recent JE's about your new love life: I for one, welcome our kissy-faced overlords! I'm not tired of it, I think its adorable, and a lot of what you are writing is stuff that I still notice with my wife. The only difference is that I've somewhat sublimated the need to write about it (Except for the occaisional song...).

Sorry to make this an FK appreciation society comment. IN all fairness to everyone else, I'm posting this AC (though from comments and possibly writing style, I'm sure someone can figure out who I am).

mass exodus a good idea (1)

banky (9941) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436319)

C'mon, slashdot blows. CmdrTaco writes in his journal, basically writing off all the flaws as if this was still some dopey personal site. There is an active community of trolls and flamers making S:N get out of control. All but one or two of the editors are freaking tools.

The only reason I'm here at all is people like you, who don't actively post anywhere else (that I know of). And rarely can I find the gumption of get in on a discussion, anyway. And I'll admit, from time to time, the headlines are interesting, although lately I don't even care. How many times can you wade through the "port to x86!!!" chorus every time there's an Apple post? Why even bother with correcting the ravings of some slash fools when it comes to various other topics?

Decentralization is the key. By and large, there's a core group of people who are strongly technical; they can host their own sites or obtain managed hosting and administer it for users who are non-technical. Why not just do what the rest of the Web does: take command of your own life, get rid of lameness filters and posting delays and moderation and idiotic editors. Become your own idiotic editor!

And seriously; slashdot puts serious restrictions on things like headline grabbers, which of late is the tech-du-jour for the "web power user". Way to stay cutting edge, guys. Love the freedom of choice.

Hell, I'll set up a "group blog" on my site; anyone who wants in, find me.

Decentralization. Distribution. Use the Web for what it is.

Honestly, I got popular pointing out all the problems with slashdot.

The only problem is I go elsewhere for the news now-a-days. Making a 'joural like' only site is just a livejournal clone. I don't know what to make of a 'break off' site that would attract the 'FK circle' to another site. I tried it before by making a slash-clone. It failed miserably.

So what's on your mind about a new site? What would be ideal in your mind?? Perhaps we should make a journal discussion on it and see what we can do? We can even make it proprietary just to piss off open source zealots!! ;-)

You don't even need to go that far. They piss themselves when it's not GPL, so just use BSD or some other license agreement.

Everyone knows that software licensing is a grand scheme by Wal-Mart to spy on our buying habits in an attempt to take over the world. :)

No, this is /., and thus Simpsons references are still key. Thus you meant to say it is the work of Major League Baseball, not Wal-Mart as WM is merely a minor player in MLBs plot.

Replacing /. journals (1)

Jack William Bell (84469) | more than 10 years ago | (#7437076)

I am working on an application myself that could be used as a /. journal replacement, but that isn't the main purpose of it... What I really want to do is change the way people connect over the web into something like an asynchronos instant messenger. Only that isn't really it either. This idea is difficult to describe in terms most /.ers are used to I'm afraid.

The application consists of a personal web server that supports a user maintained weblog (which can be hosted elsewhere, but maintained from the personal webserver) and an RSS aggregator (with hooks to add other tools). So far what I am describing is similar to PYDS [muensterland.org] (Python Desktop Server). But to this I am adding to the mix is the concept of distributed 'friends' lists, a reputation system and hooks to chat programs. Plus personal and distributed authentication, a publish/subscribe tool and a simple way to connect to people without fixed IP addresses (using IRC believe it or not). I want to take the concept of the two-way web [thetwowayweb.com] and extend it to an N-way web...

Yeah, pretty big idea. I am starting simple though, with just the weblog and RSS aggregation tools. Sadly the first version will be Windows only (I am using .NET -- flame me if you want) but hopefully it will port to Mono without too much problem. Plus it can be used remotely as well as locally and I want it to play nice with things like community servers.

But my main goal with this is a form of online social change: I want to enable people to create communities in ad hoc ways, but also provide the tools to make those communities into something more permanent. And I want this to be something you can run on a personal computer instead of requiring a server and a complex setup. My mother should be able to install and use it.

Sorry... I guess I rambled too much there. I have been working on this idea semi-secretly for so long that I can't describe the basic idea without a huge info dump. But it is a relief to actually talk about it.

Invitation accepted. ;-)

Jack, why would you do such a thing, when the Python standard library is already so feature-rich and portable, and most of the popular add-on libraries (e.g. Twisted) are portable?

Wait .. you are doing it in Python, aren't you?

Python vs .NET -- was Re:Replacing /. journals (1)

Jack William Bell (84469) | more than 10 years ago | (#7438447)

Not much of a flame there :-) More like a slight burn...

I talk about why C# and .NET are now my main development tools here [slashdot.org] .

I certainly agree with everything you just said about Python. And if this was a perfect world Python would be my main development environment. But right now I am soaking in .NET and I am training a friend .NET so he can find a job (apparently good Perl and C skills just aren't translating into employment the way .NET is). I only have so much mindshare I can apply to a development environment and, well...

I guess there is no easy way to say this... After six years away from the Borg I have been invited back. The money is good. And I get to stay in Seattle. And, well, I get to play with all the latest stuff -- so long as that stuff is .NET 2.0 and other MS tech. In fact they are literally paying me to play; my new job consists of learning the technology, writing sample code, documentation and conceptual white papers...

But I will still long after Python in my heart :-(

Re:mass exodus a good idea (1)

As you've said, de-centralize. The YRO gang gets so much critisim here I'd think it'd be easy to fracture that off. Now, I don't know how good of an idea that is since to me the mere concept of the YRO message breads concempt, and to just split off into one-thought repitition would be boring.

I have always wanted to make a /. site just for computer security topics. I feel that this deserves more light and there are tons of "stories" to be posted about bug fixes and what not. I just look at the mailing lists I'm no about vulnerabilities and I see the need for a good central site where one can post "here's a problem" and the community could (hopfully) post linkage to patches and such.

The other area that I *know* would draw a great community (although quite seperate from that of geek-dom) is the model railroading/trainspotting/etc.. community. Topics such as good places to hang out, write-ups on trainspotting, as well as product reviews and gossip about the latest this or that. Plus, the "ask" section would be *GREAT* since those who are new to the hobby would have an outlet and those with more experience can help. I have seen that the model-RR community is great about this sort of help.

There are already message boards for different manufacturers, the Bachmann one comes to mind, but only handles their product line and its quite messy with frequent posts. I can only imagine how nice that would be if it were moderated so that not everyone could post a main thread (ie. story submissions) and those with "answers" could focus on fewer (and hopefully better) things.

Neither of these would serve out little clique, but I thought I'd at least put the idea out in the open if there are others who share a similar mind and want to help me, or want to screw me and just do the thing on their own, hey, that's great.

Be that as it may, Taco and co have still managed to create something that works better than 99% of the blog software, journal sites, or comment systems out there.

There are some good sites out there run on blogger and Movable Type, however they lack the community aspect of Slashdot Journals, LiveJournal, or Kuro5hin. Not to mention that the comment systems blow and don't scale well.

I can't stand LiveJournal's comment system, the "community" there seems to be mostly made up of teenage girls and "oh my goth" types. I also dislike the fact you have to pay to be able to use it effectively.

As for Kuro5hin, for whatever reason I've never really been able to be interested enough in what goes on over there enough to become a regular. The community over there also seems to have more of a groupthink and echo chamber problem than Slashdot. I also don't think their moderation system is as effective.

In short anywhere I "switch" to needs to probably have some sort of front page with content that I find interesting to draw me in the first place. Second it needs to attract people I'm interested in interacting with for a community. Third it needs to have a slashdot like comment system in order to be useable.

One hand and the other hand (1)

insanecarbonbasedlif (623558) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436339)

Slashdot, bridges, life in general.

I think somehow, some people have formed unrealistic expectations of slashdot, or JE's. Whether they wanted entertainment, or just to pass the time, it no longer interests them (Stronger drug, anyone?). On the other hand, I think some people don't take what they do on slashdot seriously enough - everything is frivolous to them... My position? I ignore those who annoy me, I pay attention to those who I care about, and I don't expect slashdot to replace google for all my netsurfing fun.

Bridges are never good to burn, you never know what's waiting on the side that you're now stuck on. I think of all the people that are on reality shows, and talk bad about the other people on the show to the camera. Sure, that's a good idea, immortalize your momentary passionate dislike of a person on millions of people's VCRs. What if you need help someday, and the only person who could help is the one that you bad mouthed every day for a whole season of national TV? Anyhow, never a good idea to burn your bridges... it's always better to just vent elsewhere and move on, ignoring what bugged you.

Anyhow, I've got some friends on slashdot that I care about, and then some people who post interesting things that I watch, and then a large group of people that I ignore... Seems to work for me.

P.s. I've got nothing against any of you all, if I did, you'd probably just forget that I existed because I'd just be ignoring you.

I'll bite... (1)

SamTheButcher (574069) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436362)

Well, about the only thing I have to add is that if someone here is annoying me, I take it to them directly. At our meetup in DC there were only a couple people that came up as annoying, but that was more of a meatspace "something to bond about" thing.

You're not annoying at all. I mean, the things that people would find annoying like blathering about religion, innuendo, boyfriends/girlfriends, etc, if I don't agree, I largely ignore. Who am I to say you're wrong? Or right? I'm happy for the people that seem to deserve happy things that happen to them; I'm interested when people talk about things that I know nothing about but am drawn to (RW, slothdog, gmhowell). I mean, I could care less about gmhowell's bike enthusiasm, but it's because I'm not a bike guy and have very little to put into the conversation. His ongoing life with Angie and his son is interesting because I don't know anyone in that situation and it's interesting (to me) to see how people react/adapt.

Now, about bethanie who got a little more than she deserved in LG's journal, while I find her tendencies toward innuendo odd (I'd probably have a problem if my wife were doing that online), it's actually none of my business and as long as no one's getting hurt (hubby seems to know enough to check her posts out and so surely knows what goes on here), then why should I open my big, fat mouth?

I try to take the piss out of myself because I'm the same as all of you. Just some dope with an opinion and a keyboard. I've found some friends here, and that's cool. I've never talked a lot to you, but I do feel we'd get along well IRL. I just seem to have more in common with other people, and that usually means music. I'd love to get up to sielwolf's level and have a conversation with him about some of his ramblings/rants, but I think he's really on a different intellectual plane than a lot of us here. I think he *is* qualified to discuss the universe. Not that we're all mental midgets, but I think he's just a couple floors up.

So...no harsh words here, I guess. I'm bland. I don't need to be liked, but I don't want to be hated. I like having discussions, but usually feel I'm not qualified to "go deep" on some of the subjects, and other ones don't warrant my opinion.

Beer and music and writing are my things, and I've not had a beer in a long time, and with a wife, kids and colitis, am not really prone to drinking like I used to be (or like I want to be!). I don't write creatively much because I know what it takes and don't really make the time for myself to. Which is why I'm not a writer. I don't have that passion.

I could probably trim my "friends" list down to about 20 people, maybe. I don't wanna be any arbiter and I certainly don't see myself as anyone important.

I'm just a dope with a keyboard and an opinion.

Hubby was super-cool when I met him. I think he's ok with it because he know that no matter what, she loves him and would never be with anyone else. I think it's a great sign of trust, and healthy in a relationship. And to bethanie's credit, she is a LITTLE more daring online than off.

I've found some friends here, and that's cool... I do feel we'd get along well IRL.
Yeah, and I hope we get to hang out sometime.

I just seem to have more in common with other people, and that usually means music.
Speaking of which... I'm thinking of getting my guitar back out and trying to write a song for her. I've never been great at guitar (although I did play backup to a piano and drums in front of the entire college my freshmen year), but I have a little more inspiration this time.

Roger that, and you know it. :)

I'm thinking of getting my guitar back out and trying to write a song for her.

Good luck with that. I suck at writing "I love you" songs. As Sting said on Oprah, "'I love you, you love me' songs are boring. 'I love you, you love someone else', now there's something to write about." I largely agree, although there are some beautiful love songs out there. I just have trouble writing them. ;) I have written one for my wife and our first daughter, though. It's very simple and there's not a lot to it, but I do really like it. Maybe it's time I got around to posting my other songs on my site...my solo songs....

Try making your own beer. It takes an afternoon, then some patience. You'll gain much enjoyment, without actually having to tie one on. Develop your tasting and appreciation skills (mine have slipped over the past 18 months, and I really need to get the tastebuds back in line).

My wife belongs/ed to an online group that is a major hen party. Now I have to read the notes to Angie. It always makes me feel unclean. These people would make sailors blush. Bethanie would be par for the course in that group.

As far as being 'bland' or whatever, who cares? I started writing my journal for me, not for the audience.

Re:I'll bite... (1)

SamTheButcher (574069) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436701)

I'd go for brewing my own, but like I say, I wouldn't have much chance to enjoy it with my colitis. Alcohol is an inflammatory and that's what I don't need where that is concerned. I'm pretty much looking at giving up one of my favorite things in life. :(

I started writing my JE's sort of to see who'd respond, but in a "this is what I'm doing" sort of way. I wasn't surprised when not many people did respond. ;) I guess I did my Europe journal earlier this year for myself... I don't mean "bland" in a "we're boring" way, but in a "I'm just putting this stuff out there, whatever" way. I'm aware of the audience when I write, but I'm also aware of my wife's wishes to not be an online topic of discussion. I don't write purely for me - I don't even know what that would look like. Probably like the stuff I wrote back in high school, because that was purely for me to get feelings and thoughts out. I don't use /. like that, I guess I just realised. :)

Relax...Have a Home Brew (1)

RevMike (632002) | more than 10 years ago | (#7437102)

I read down this thread, then got confused about who homebrew's and asked Same this instead of you. D'oh

Do you have a decent recipe for a "holiday" ale for someone still doing malt extract brewing? I'd also like a recipe for a Marzen or Festbier that I can do in the spring with extract and an ale yeast. I don't have the equipment for lager.

Re:Relax...Have a Home Brew (1)

gmhowell (26755) | more than 10 years ago | (#7437540)

The recipe [hbd.org] for this [refundersrefuge.org] . (Boy, HBD is incredibly slow today). Oh, you will need some specialty grains. If you haven't done them yet, it is incredibly trivial. You just need a hop bag (about 50 cents each) and a collander, preferably stainless (I've never tried my plastic strainer). Plenty of guides online, or you can shoot me an email, and I can tell you how to do the specialty grains.

The recipe says that I hadn't made it yet, but I have since. A few modifications and clarifications: The cardamom should be crushed (and I would increase it a bit) and it definately needs more cloves (also crushed). If you get fresh spices, YMMV. Also, note that the hops are a bit on the low side, (I think a brown ale calls for 25-40 ibu's, depending on whether British or American) but that is because the spices will do much of the work of the hops.

There's different ways to do the spices. I made a tea and added it to the fermenter after the wort, but before topping up. If I do it again, I might make a tea out of the priming sugar liquid, or do something to get the spices as late as possible. Hmm, I should print this message for myself and make it this weekend... Five weeks is cutting things close, but I think I could get it done.

If you're ever looking for a recipe, or someplace to start, the recipator is good for almost any style. If you search on my name (is that possible??) you should be able to find recipes for every beer I've made, which is only a half dozen or so.

Re:Relax...Have a Home Brew (1)

Forgot about a Marzen. I've made one, but never got to bottle it, so it's 'kicked'. Sorry:( FWIW, all of the beers I've made lately I start with three sources and collate them. I find recipes from my LHBS, which are pretty close to type. If they don't have something for a certain style, I look in BYO magazine. Then I look at the recipator for good 'twists' to the standards. Finally, I punch the numbers into a calculator (the recipator one works fine) and compare to standards from the Classic Beer Series. I'll also take this time to make substitutions depending on what hops I have/like and what grain I already have around. I'm not married to the standards found in the Classic Beer Series, but some of the volumes are very good on what substitutions are good or interesting.

These are the recipes [mdhb.com] from my LHBS.

As usual, Sam, you are right on the money. For the record, TL's blathering about his girlfriend is of zero interest to me. When a JE on that subject comes up, I hit delete and move on with my life. Likewise much of Sol's fiction. I don't "get" most of it. I hit delete and move on. I miss Glamkowski's recipes. I like the "news roundups". I'm pretty far right, but I don't even mind when lefties post their stories (though I insist that both left and right stories be factual).

Please, a show of hands. How many of you don't like the fact that most of my contribution is wise-ass comments? I thought so.

PS: Sam - do you have a decent recipe for a "holiday" ale for someone still doing malt extract brewing? I'd also like a recipe for a Marzen or Festbier that I can do in the spring with extract and an ale yeast. I don't have the equipment for lager.

I've never brewed...unfortunately. Talk to gmhowell, or...there's someone else here who's a brewer, but I forget who. Was it bubblegoose? Someone else out there back East. Write to george about it and he'll likely point you in the right direction(s).

And I agree...I read TL's girlfriend stuff, because interpersonal relationships are interesting to me, and having a friend find love is grand. Sol's fiction....I also think I don't get. Her "Harvest" journal was awesome, I think she's a very talented and articulate writer, but I'm a bit lost on the fiction. I guess that's where that whole "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" thing comes in. :) Well, that's not entirely true. I've done some critique of Oculus Habent's writings, but because he seems to be starting out with it and genuinely interested in criticism. First, I think Sol's self-critical enough to handle that and probably has some other good editors around to help with that. She doesn't seem a stranger to the writing world. Second, the things OH writes about is more in my realm, the kind of writing we covered in my "Creative Writing" classes in my college classes at SDSU. Things I think I can comment on with some authority.

So....yeah. There's that. :)

Hehe...well, you're enough of a writer that I would say your self-editing skillz are up to par more than most who would dash off fiction.

I was flattered you wrote me into it! I just...didn't really...get it. I'll check it out again, but my recollections are like reading really loopy script-calligraphy, to the point where you almost can't read what it says. Does that make sense?

If you want criticism, I'll be happy to do that for you!

I'll go back over them sometime...hopefully tonight...and see if I can't/don't get more out of it. Oke?

Wow, you're right I DO feel better. What's that... oh, this isn't Em's journal? Wow... no, FK, you're pretty kewl. Especially next to Em.

(Just kidding Em, I'm only picking on you because I know you can take it.) Oh, and FK, how's about we put an end to the Photo Contest II now, huh? I don't think anyone else is waiting to vote. Thanks.

I wish we had a better granularity to the relationship thing as I find your posts to other JEs interesting, but I got tired of reading what I considered to be OT JEs. I know it's just my opinion, and the journals are for whatever you want to do with them, so that's why I just read what I want to read. Don't take it as a personal statement or nothing, we just see the same thing differently, and that's cool.

Oh, and while we're ranting I would like to state, for the "record," that Blackneto just needs to calm down and take a pill. He can continue to think whatever things he wants to think about me, true or otherwise, it doesn't mean anything to me, but if he wants to discuss the truth I welcome that. I am not the devil and he can stop trolling me now, it got real old real fast.

I wish we had a better granularity to the relationship thing as I find your posts to other JEs interesting,
I know how you feel, I have several people on my friends list that I delete the JE messages without reading because I don't have time, and it never interests me, but I like their comments enough to friend them. I leave them friended and delete the JEs. I assumed that's what was going on, and I'm cool with it. I'm writing more about my girlfriend now than religion, so I'm sure I'll lose some people over that. But it's all good. ;-)

Don't take it as a personal statement or nothing, we just see the same thing differently, and that's cool.
No, man, I like hearing what you have to say. I think you are a great guy and I could probably hang out with you and have a blast. We're both mature enough to realize that there ARE other viewpoints out there and someone having a different opinion is not a bad thing. I have nothing against you, that's why you are still on my friends list. People's opinion of me has little bearing on how I feel about them. I still have someone friended that showed what I consider huge immaturity by basically saying he didn't want to listen to anything I have to say about anything becuase of my views on religion. My response to that is: why don't we just avoid the topic of religion. Don't read the JEs that are marked "Religious" and you'll be fine. He preffered to not respond, so whatever...

You know my feelings. I think that LG was venting some RL stress and felt comfortable in unleashing on her /. friends. I think it was immature of her to insult you, SafetyCap, and Bethanie.

I don't think she really cares what anyone (outside of her core /. friends) think. She's taken her ball and gone home.

As far as what's wrong with you? Or /. Journals? Nothing. We all have our own lives and opinions and agendas and honestly if there is something you don't like or don't want to read, then you can DELETE it or Un-Friend someone.

Personally, I have had people in the past ask that I not post multiple JEs per day, because they are unable to read so many JEs in one day and wish to give everyone a fair reading. I have made an effort to condense my JEs in order that those people may continue to read my JE and other's. Constructive criticism is ALWAYS a good thing and for me always positive.

Change is inevitable and none of us can say if we'll be posting to /. tomorrow.

Just my 2cents.

When I read what she wrote, I got hot for a minute (well, more like 5 minutes). It hurt. Not because I know the site is butt ugly - I've never made any pretentions about being a graphic artist - but because she could neither know nor apprciate the effort that both FK and I put into getting it done; about the folks who supplied suggestions; or about everyone who participated.

What's unfortunate is that she chose to take the unhappiness in her own life and "spread it around" to everyone in her circle. That's not what I think friends (real or imaginary) are for.

That being said, you are right about change. People will come and go from the amorphous blob of FK's friends -- heck, even one day FK will go -- and I'm not sure this exact mix of folks could be reproduced anywhere else. So like it, hate it, or indifferent, /. was able to bring us all together...

THE PHOTOSHOP CONTEST DELAY.

Now, i'm no one to talk, and i'll admit that i flinch at the things people must have stored up to say about me. Yes, i'm opinionated, vain, self-centred, and pretentious. I'm also stubborn, liberal, lonely, and whine a lot without making the things that i whine about my number-one-top-priority to change.

All that aside, where's me freaking photo contest answers????

Is it too much to ask? *sigh*

I want to know to whom i'm yelling. I want to know who LG is so i know who's gone.

That aside, i don't see anything wrong with you that needs hollering about, although it's possible that you're too freaking popular and i'm annoyed that my imperious bearing doesn't translate well through cyberspace. (For that matter, it's possible that i'm really a sentient chihuahua who's hitting the keyboard with her cold, wet nose, but who's counting?)

Other complaints: 43 % of sol says, "Not enough funny," 89% of sol says, "Not enough photo contest results," and 22% of sol says, "Oodles of poodles jump over noodles in der strudel..."

78% insist that they don't even want to know what that means, much less which comic it came from. (hint: think subliminal advertising, ackphhbbt, and "Rhi-nocerous!")

And 100% of sol says that you're 100% doing just fine.

Currently FK's poll ratings seem to be at about -10% and falling. However, when asked about the effect that releasing the photo contest answers would have on FK's approval rating, Ethelred Unraed was quoted as saying, "Wobble."

22% of sol says, "Oodles of poodles jump over noodles in der strudel..."

Unfortunately this happens with most such communities. Over time they change, grow, evolve. Just as in "real life", new people come into the group, old people leave and those who remain change in time too. It's just life.

It is a shame to see LG go, but she has shown signs of change over the past few months, and it is time for her to move on and become something other than what the "FK circle" was turning her into.

Oh, and FK? You suck for being tardy with the photo contest results, but apart from that you're still pretty cool. ;-)

gmhowell (26755) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436516)

Like *mumble, mumble, the AC* said, you, personally aren't around much anymore. But that's no big thing. Participation ebbs and flows depending on RL. As far as friending/foeing and annoying each other... Here is a list of people who have pissed me off [slashdot.org] . If you haven't pissed me off, you're not likely to be interesting enough to be on that list.

Cyrano annoys me more than others (and on at least a few occasions, vice versa) but even when he's wrong, he makes me think. Brent is a nut with opinions reminiscent of Torquemada, but he has a conviction that I find lacking in many, so he's on my list. I could go on and on, but I won't. I learned long ago that just because someone pisses you off doesn't mean you can't be friends with them.

To paraphrase Frank Costanza, "I've got a lotta problems with you people!" Perhaps I'm atypical. Even as an adult, I've had arguments with my mother over politics that have resulted in us not talking for a week. No big whoop.

As far as an exodus, I doubt it'll fly. Marotti.com never took off, and it was arguably on a better foundation.

Is /. the right place for a blog? Who knows? Not sure what makes it better/worse than a billion other choices. One thing I would like to do is set up a journal/comment scraper so that I can keep a local archive, should something happen with /.

no problems (1)

blinder (153117) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436611)

No problems to report here. I've been a lurker of your journal for a while, and generally enjoy the what you post. While JE's don't provide any real indepth insight into who anyone is, I figure you're a good egg :-)

As for LG... I have no idea who that was until all this hub bub, but good grief... I love being told off like that "The rest of you can, in the great /. tradition, go fuck cowboy neal." Hey thanks! But hey, that was the intended reaction she had in mind... its a "fuck off" in the grandest tradition. I for one, generally just like the "just leave, don't say a word" method. Its worked for me lots of time... like after graduation.

Oh... I got off the point... I guess that was bound to happen, cause, well, I have no criticism (constructive or otherwise) to offer.

My thoughts (1)

glh (14273) | more than 10 years ago | (#7436849)

I'm kind of sick of slashdot myself. I think it was Keith Russel [slashdot.org] who summed it up quite well in his latest JE.

It kind of reminds me of "groundhog day". The same old stuff keeps happening over and over again. Hey, I'm as guilty as the next guy, I looked at some of my JE's and a bunch of them were the same old stuff with a different date stamped on them.

Regardless, I've had many good discussions with people on slashdot, and it's really fun to catch up and see what is going on in other people's lives when I don't really even know those people per se. On the other hand, I've also been insulted by trolls, AC's, and even people that I thought were friends on slashdot (you know who you are). Boo hoo! I guess I'll just have to get it over it. And I have. I've seen the concept of online relationships evolve over the years, and no matter where the forum sits it still boils down to the same old issues.

Slashdot is is just one "chapter" in our lives, one more evolution of the virtual relationship scene. This may be the beginning of the end, at least for some of us. We will move on to the next best thing. Some of us will move en masse, others like LG will cut themselves off completely and move on. I personally have been looking around at other blog type sites, but they just aren't quite as focused or personal as slashdot so I'm still in the "waiting for the next best thing" mode. The one thing I like about the slashdot blogs are the tight community. For the most part I like the community, though it is definitely changing. at times I feel closer, at other times I feel further away from it.

Why we should never change (1)

Some Woman (250267) | more than 10 years ago | (#7437023)

You can't please everybody, and if you try, you'll just wear yourself out in the process. I, for one, like the blog-style, story-telling entries. I confess that I skip over the techie entries that don't incorporate large chunks of chemistry. Others would prefer that you stick to rants about Linux Kernel 2.5.3.4.5.6.4.6.6.9.1 and the occasional SciFi flick. All you can do is make your journal pleasing to you. If people like 'em, they'll read; if not, they won't.

You don't have breasts.

Today was the first time I read LG's journal. A woman on a site with a male majority constantly bragging about her breasts. Sounds like someone wants some attention and doesn't care what kind of attention she gets. IME the bitching about stalkers, the talk about hair and costumes, the maturity jibes, it's all part of the game. Don't take it personally, it's just business-- the business of ego-stroking. When the worshippers start moving on, so does she. Only one day the costume won't fit anymore, everyone will leave, and that whole pasteboard world will collapse. So don't second-guess yourself over this, consider the source.

And that includes those who worshipped. Do you really want to change to please anyone in the Breast of the Month Club? No offense to, well, the rest of the entire site. I'm sure you're all good folks, but you're still not getting my address.

seeing as i usually don't have anything bad to say about anyone, and you are really looking for something bad about yourself, here goes:

tired of wasting time on the stupid lameness filter, so you're missing the first part.

**** THE PROOF THAT FortKnox IS EVIL **** [coredump.cx]

...

Thus, "FortKnox" is 5495.

Multiply the number by 002 - this is the symbol of greed, from right to left. It gives 10990.

Add 69, the symbol of perversion and pleasue in sin - the result is 11059.

Turn the number backwards, subtract 1986 - the year of the Chernobyl "incident". The number is now 93025.

Subtract 1895, the year Rudolph Hess was born. The result will be 91130.

Turn the number backwards, subtract 1666 - the year of the Great London Fire. The number is now 1453.

This, when read backwards, gives 3541. This is 1889 in octal, the year Adolf Hitler was born...

Evil, QED.

I have this great solution (1)

If /. is no longer interesing, cruise other sites. That's what I do on slow days (i.e. Sunday at around 10am). There are a lot of net communities out there.

I think it's a cabin fever thing: if you stay stuck in this one house you'll go bananers. And I'm not saying go outside and read a book because I realize that webbrowsing is a nice catharsis during work (which going out for a walk isn't). I read a lot of Janes [janes.com] if I'm sick of /.

Really, this is only a website. Nothing here save a nice little bit of R&R. That's why the trolls and the ACs don't bother me: my e-persona isn't worth getting into a twist over. It's hard to remember that when JE's et al can become quite personal.

That's the point where you get up from your desk and take a walk to the water fountain.

You know what I'd say to you if I didn't like you? Nothin'. Absolutely nothin'.

If I HAD to pick something ... it'd be that you don't live in Pittsburgh ... that that's my general beef with everyone. :)

Wow, I am just now imagining a world where everyone but me lives in Pittsburgh. You are a happy soul with so many you love there (except for me) and I am a happy soul due the the better traffic conditions in my area.

Great, now the practical side of me kicks in and ponders how to cram the entire population of the world into Pittsburgh and I start to see that going up won't work and thus you'd probably have to go out and you may soon envelope me as I'm just a few hours drive East.

Great, I can't even escape Pittsburgh living this far away!

Due to the population mass you would create Pittsburgh would become like a black-hole and I would be drawn in.

oh and LG was an attention whore.
Um so is FK & TL. :)

As far as /. goes I pretty much only read the dev threads. I get news quicker from other sources.
Developers is the only place where its mostly Old School /.

I'm glad someone noticed that. Thank you for putting it concisely. Funny that she seeked so much attention, then when she got it she was somehow amazed. Did she think people wouldn't look at her when she kept advertising her web-cam?

You know, FK, there's something I've been meaning to say for a long time and I just have to get it off my... ahem... chest.

You're just too squeaky clean. You need to get a little naughtier... you know, loosen up a little and engage a bit of innuendo yourself. 'Cause you just come off as this really uptight Christian family guy afraid of being misconstrued as a dirty-minded pervert.

You need to hang out around me more. :-)

....Bethanie....
This was mostly meant in jest. You can guess which parts. :-)

Put it another way: he lives too far away from me (or banky) or his morals would be so corrupted ... he'd be fun!

I just know a couple of strippers that would love to play with him. Most of them female.

83 comments, as of this posting. And how fast is the slashdot community going downhill? Apparently, not as fast as y'all can post!

And FK, if you didn't have LG's undying envy, you will when she sees how many more people replied to YOUR entry about her departure than to hers.... *shaking head*

You know, I *do* hope she's gone and has had it with the 'dot, and it isn't some psychological exercise like the ones JtS has done. I don't think she would, but I didn't think he would either.

It is interesting, though, how many people have written about it today. I never thought it would take the direction it has, but it has generated a lot of posting here in the circle. Over a couple hundred (few hundred? More?) posts related to the whole thing.

So, for LG's leaving... +1, Interesting.

I'm hoping it's not -1, Flamebait or Troll.

;)

Well, Jorg just dropped out of sight for a couple of weeks, whereas LG decided to fire a parting shot. In a way, Jorg's approach made it easier to return, whereas LG will find it easier to stay away (at least for a bit longer than JtS's stint) because if (when?) she has an urge to pop her head back in, she will think about the fallout from her JE.

It's good to have you around. In fact, I might create a journal entry doing what you did.

i hate that you're not exactly like me in mind, thought, and body. that was a joke. i have nothing against you. don't see you around much,

i remember a long time ago when you were thinking of doing some sort of video game mod thing and then ended up getting into something else instead, but i've been over that for years (and i was only irritated a bit, not even angry). truth is, i'm the same way sometimes where i get all excited about some project and then change my mind. you've got a kid, and i appreciate it.

truth be told, you're a really decent person. i don't know if we'd get along IRL or not. it doesn't matter.

i also think i'm more irritating than other people in the circle.

Safety Cap (253500) | more than 10 years ago | (#7441036)

You have a life, or something, so you can't be a slave to ./ and keep the JEs coming.

Oh, and you still haven't provided me with the names for the #$(& photo contest... or the extra picture for that guy (#31?? I forget).

Well, I take it back, because I never finished writing the "answers" part of the code; it is just hanging there, and if you said, "Okay SC, here's the answers," then I'd actually have to write it, but I have like a billion other things I'm supposed to do, so I write it when I'm home, but then the wifey gets mad and I have to sleep in the garage. Again. So it is getting cold now, so I couldn't get to sleep on account of the flimsy sheet I get, so then I get on the freeway tired, and pass out, flip my car and end up in heck.

THANKS A LOT!!!!!!
