Journal Chacham's Journal: Slashdot Habits: Moving foes, profanity filter. 22

So, i had to remove more friends to make room for more foes. Too many foes. I wish this place had a profanity filter. Oh well.

Anyway, time to set up another user or two as profanity filters, and mod down foe of friend. I wonder if there's an easy way to transfer foes. Perhaps a perl script will do. I just wonder if /. will mind me doing a few hundred db queries, adding new foes to new users, and removing all mine.

I guess it's not just the profanity that i don't want to see. There are three types of profanity users. Some, just to bother the user. The annoying ones. I don't want to see them at all. There is no point. Then, the proverbial "potty mouth". People who just use it all the time. Like the old Eddie Murphy, or Robin Williams. Unless i am told they are clean in a specific area, i think it best too keep away. The third, is the occasional. The occasional uses logic sometimes, but gets carried away in an emotional argument and starts using profanity. I don't want to see their profanity, and, i guess, i don't even want to see their argument, a profanity filter on some specific words won't help, because their entire post is just of no interest to me. Even blocking all their posts is fine, because as they get more serious, to the meat of a good argument, they get emotional and incoherrent.

There is another type. Similar to the occasional. However, they use profanity simply because it's there. They usually try to not use it, but it happens in conversation, and it doesn't bother them. They are not so much a "user" of profanity, more likely a slip. To those people, just having some plugin cover their words would be fine for me. I wonder if such a thing exists.

  • ...any reasonable being can tell whether or not there's an idea beneath the surface of what someone is saying. I tend to be put off by people that embrace what society deems as "wrong" just to question that moral judgement, since there are better ways to do so, but refusing to hear harsh language does turn you off to a lot of reasonable ideas.

I guess my big question for you is, what do you have against profanity itself?

    • I believe that everything affects everybody, big or small. Hearing profanity, affects me to become more coarse overall, and even to think in such degrading terms. I know this because i used to use profanity a lot. When my sister stopped, i got jealous and copied her. There is a *big* difference.

Profanity is not the only thing. When i hear a radio commercials degrading others (Franklin Bank being of the worst offenders) i change the station, or turn off the radio. I don't watch TV anymore (except episodes t
      • Gotcha. You know, my older brother used to be a staunch atheist, and has since converted to becoming a very, very devout Christian.

At first, he really refused to interact with society as a whole, fearing that worldy influences would lead him astray. The older he gets, the more he feels confident in his beliefs, and the more comfortable he feels around others who do not share those beliefs, and often encourage 'sin.'

I agree that profanity can have a subtle influence. My position is that the more you thi

        • My position is that the more you think about what you say, the less profanity comes to mind.

Very true. Though, i'd like to get to the point, where even if i don't think, i won't.

Perhaps at some point not swearing becomes a habit and you can enter the unclean dialogue of the masses without your speech degrading. Of course, perhaps not.

It's not just that i don't want to do it myself. It's that, speech reflects our thoughts. I don't even want my *thoughts* to be that course! (Even if i can't do that all
      • I agree with the TV part. It seems that we got bored of seeing actors feel pain, so we needed to watch real people feel pain.

I especially love reality shows that bring young people together (actually, at 19 I'm younger than most of them heh), make them bond with eachother, and then make them vote one off at regular intervals. The writers don't want you to feel sad along with them...they want you laugh at them, and think that the show is really for people stupid enough to get wrapped up in it, and that yo

        • Yep. That's about it.

I wonder why. Does TV lead the people in coarseness and stupidity, or do the people lead TV. Or....do people dream about it, have TV make it seem real, and then mimic it so it becomes real.

Either way, TV is so degrading now, i'm lucky i *finally* got away from it. Next on the list (and it may be far, far away) is to stop watching movies......
          • Movies are different. Many movies actually do demonstrate rather fruitful ideas.

The point is to get away from baseless filth. You can safely cut the cable, but I would draw the line there.

Let's just face it...Survivor is more enticing than Gilligan's Island.

If it weren't for the massive swearing and violence, I'd reccomend the move The Running Man to you (maybe you've already seen it). Really, television is starting to look like that movie (and that's a bad thing).

            • Well, i think Gilligan's Island is better. It's a comedy, and people are people, yet everyone respects one another. Perhaps that's part of the lasting quality.

Movies are different. Many movies actually do demonstrate rather fruitful ideas.

Granted. They are different, and do have good ideas. However, influence is influennce....
        • I refuse to watch those shows because,

          quite frankly,

          nobody bleeds.

*shrugs* I am of the "survivor means face to face battle with a bear, no weapons!" school.

Practically speaking, if the perl script is coming from an "expendable" IP address (you don't mind if the IP gets banned) then it doesn't matter

OTOH, it's got to be a perl script that can log in to slashdot and return the correct cookie with each HTTP request.

i thought i'd find more, but it looks like it's easier to block sites rather than actively filter content. there's also a lot of stuff for message boards and chat clients. maybe you can find more.

That is usually the case. However, at least sometimes, the messages show me even filtered out messages. Even thgough, messages are only supposed to show me +1 and higher.

So, i saw the title, and decided to take a look. :)

Thanx i'll take a look. Looks neat at first glance. Perhaps when i get home.

what a rip-off. i'm not even making fun of you. i feel cheated that you're being cheated. plus you try to ignore my presence. it's disappointing to find out that you see my posts without meaning to. i say if you want to ignore me you should be allowed. i don't run into that particular slashdot "feature" but at least in this case it might do you some good.

        • i'm not saying it's always appropriate, just that sometimes it does give a meaning that is incredibly close to the intention. that's my opinion on the matter.

That i agree to. However, there are others ways to express the same thing. With the same emotion, yet some thought first. Filtering means there is fore-thought. When emotion is thought out, i actually would like to read it.

but i do appreciate that you are making your own path to an improved chacham.

          Thanx. :)
