Journal Pii's Journal: What should go on my Christmas list? 11

It's that time of year... My wife has formally requested my Christmas list, and I'm having trouble with it.

So far, I've got:

That's it... Looking over it, it looks mighty damn boring to me.

What should I be adding? What are the single biggest items that everyone else is looking for?

    • I'm afraid that my knowledge of authors and genres is lacking at the moment.

I just read my first non-Cisco related book in two years, for pleasure, on Friday.

For the record, it was Poker Nation [amazon.com], by Andy Bellin. If you're a Poker fan, like I am, then you'd enjoy this book. It wasn't exactly what I expected, but that's allright. It dealt a lot with degenerate gamblers, and the lifestyle of people that play poker for a living (or attempt to). Interesting read.

(I bought it because I heading out to Veg

        • Home Media is ok, but the DirecTivos have dual-tuner capability, and that's a feature that trumps Home Media hands down.

I have two DirecTivos already, but I have a couple more normal receivers that I'd like to get replaced.

What I really need is a HiDef sat receiver. I have two HD sets (A 42" Samsung, and a (wait for it) 65" Mits), and I've never viewed true HD content on either of them. If my cable company gets their act together on HiDef, they may win me back as a subscriber.

      • I had a Sig 230 that my Dad bought me as a gift. The thing constantly jammed on me, couldn't trust it. Plus .380 is a little small for my tastes. Sold it and bought another Glock .40, the small one (model 27), I already had the medium one, the Model 22.

The guy who bought my Sig filed down the front lip of the magazines and it worked fine after that. The feeding round would catch on the way in. They were the mags that came with the gun. That isn't the typical experience with Sigs, but I'll never buy another
        • That's a disappointing Sig review, not to mention surprising.

I can't help but wonder if perhaps the buyer might not have been better served by getting the feed ramp polished, rather than by modifying his magazines. There's no good reason that factory magazines should have been the problem.

It's something for me to think about, as I think of that particular model as the "Lady Sig." I'd been thinking of getting one for my wife. She really likes the feel of my Kahr, although she hasn't fired it yet (That

          • My pistol experience started with my dad taking me out to the range with his police issued .38 service revolver. I think I was about 8, we shot gallon jugs full of water to teach me how much damage it could do and not to mess with his pistol. He used to get buckets of low powder charge wadcutter ammo for it for free.

I bought my Glock the day I turned 21. 40 cals were only out for about a year or so and I thought it would be a great compromise between the heavy hitting .45 and the high capacity 9mm. The tri

  • How about a DVD burner? The price on those is screaming down.

    • Hey, that's an idea...

That reminds me. I saw that Pioneer has a Tivo/DVD Burner combo box on the shelves right now. I'd have put it on the list immediately, except that I have DirecTV.

Is anybody making a DirecTV/Tivo/DVD Burner combo yet?

      • The Pioneer unit is very expensive, around $1100 right now.

Plus it has the 120 GB limit that all Tivos have, so at super high quality it only handles about 11 hrs. You can hack it and add a second drive, but still that's pretty limited.
