Journal Xerithane's Journal: Seattle, here I (may) come! 28

I have an interview up in Seattle for a company I would love to work for. Cars + Code = Heaven. Good stuff, and I'm really excited about it. Interview is on Wednesday, and I'm already pretty amped about it. I think it will be a really fun position, and the guy I spoke with on the phone sounded pretty cool, and he likes Toyota/Lexus, too.

Moving to Seattle will be a transition that will take a while to get used to. Luckily it's only 2 hours north, so I can still come down and visit my friends. Being unemployed is just way too boring for me.

Seattle, here I (may) come!

  • You must drive fast. More like 3 and a half hours for normal folks like Mrs. Obvious.

If she had her druthers, we'd live as close to the Woodburn Outlets as possible.
    • It's about 160 miles from Vancouver to downtown Seattle. I think like 167. I go on average around 80, until Tacoma then knock it down to 70.

Down to Woodburn it's a good 3 hours. That's where I'm going today, woo.
      • The Polo outlet almost makes the trip worth making.

        Almost.

I could do without wandering around the damn Calvin Klein bra shop for an hour with the wife, though.
        • I will be feeling your pain in a few more hours. Although I gotta say the Calvin Klein boycot underware isn't a bad thing to spectate.

Perfumania is the place that pisses me off. So are you going to make it back to Seattle or are you staying in Japan?
          • Staying in Japan for the foreseeable future. We were watching a travelogue on one of the cable channels here for BC and thought about how nice it would be to move to Banff or somewhere 'up there'.

But that's just a pipe dream for now. I'm going to ride this job out until the end of January when the company dissolves this division and then reassess what I really want to be doing.

I'm not sure it is going to be computers, though.

What's the process for immigration there? Your wife is Japanese, right?
Not been there, but I've been to Victoria and it was quite nice...

I don't blame you one bit. I was thinking about getting out of the IT world, but I don't have a college degree and that is
              • I'm pretty sure the immigration process to become permanent Canadian residents is just a matter of showing up at the border with your suitcases.

Try taking some trips up to Vancouver while you're living in Seattle, there's some fun stuff to do up there.

Definitely will do once the GF gets her greencard. I20s are ridiculously annoying.
                • I believe moving to Canada is more complicated than that. A couple of friends of my mom's are trying to move to Vancouver for political reasons (and to be closer to their son, who moved there in political protest) and they're having to do some jumping through hoops, proving that they are capable of working, not too old, etc. I will ask my mother next time I speak to her for more details.

I am jealous of anyone living in the pacific northwest - that was our original target, we ended up in Denver instead.
      • I've only driven between Portland and Seattle a few times. One was late at night and took about 2 hours.... The other was on a Sunday afternoon and took 4 hours. There was a ton of traffic, moving about 50 in a 65 zone or something between Olympia and Seattle.

Was that a fluke or do you just know when to travel and not hit traffic?
        • It's all about knowing when to travel, and then getting lucky. I left today at 9:30 and didn't hit any traffic. I wasn't sure when the interview would be done and caught some on the way back... Wasn't back except for an accident south of Olympia, which I'll write about.

I'm tired now, gonna just chill for the rest of the night.
  • What's the job involve? How is it car-related?

And what's to say in the positive column about Toyotas or Lexuses (Lexi?) ? I ask as I am in the market for a vehicle of some form. I personally am pretty much ignorant in such matters. All of my friends have strident opinions however, all of a sudden ... but Lexus hasn't come up yet.

I'be been waiting for a progress update on your project.

Btw, I just brought my laptop in from the car, I left it in the car overnight so its very cold, the screen seems really faded, I assume from the cold... Interesting, and yet a level of paranoia that my screen will crack like a windshield as it heats up... But man is it distracting right now...

Project is going good. It's in a biz dev stage, for the most part. I'm writing a WYSIWYG editor in HTML/JS which is a pain in the ass, because it's a better solution. I'm still going to work on it, but I decided that I really will need a job to get this off the ground. I'm playing around with a lot of new ideas with nerdfarm, and will be pushing a new nerdfarm site out probably in December (depends how things go)

Btw, I just brought my laptop i
  • Cobalt Group? That's the only auto/computer related company I can really think of up here that's recently been hiring. Still, very cool. I'll have to take you out for a drink once you get settled (assuming you get the job). Good luck!
    • I'll let you know the name if I get the job :) It's not Cobalt Group. I don't post the name of companies I work at publicly, just personal policy.

Thanks for the offers on the drink. We're thinking of moving downtown so we don't have to drive as much. The company is located in downtown, and the GF hates driving (and I worry something fierce about her driving) so I think that's going to be the plan.
      • Yeah, I've posted my employer's name in my journal a couple of times, but I don't usually do it that often.

Downtown's not a bad place to live if you want to be close to work, (I lived in Belltown for 18 months) but I thought it somewhat sucked for finding grocery stores you can walk to (the ones I did find were very expensive for me at the time while I was a student). And of course, I'm cheap, and I don't like sharing a wall/ceiling/floor with others, so blah. I prefer house living in-city where possible
        • We're going to shop at Uwajimaya mostly, and for the other stuff a local grocer should be just fine. Thanks for you info though, need more opinions from the residents.
      • If you're going to be working downtown, than you definitely want to live there as well, if at all possible. I work on the Eastside, so live in Issaquah, and I get to laugh at all the people heading downtown every morning as I cruise into work. Depending on where you work downtown, Queen Anne might be a decent place to live.
  • seattle is on my short list of places to potentially move to eventually
