Five Hour Maintenance... Where???

I'm seeing something on the front page that I presume is some sort of google adsense joke. It says this site will be down for maintenance from 8pm tonight through 1am tomorrow. That doesn't make sense, as we all know this site isn't maintained. I just can't figure out who gains from this ad, and I'm not sure I want to click on it.I'm seeing something on the front page that I presume is some sort of google adsense joke. I clicked it and it went away. Slashdot's slashdotting itself tomorrow.

Oh, and that five hours is probably accounting for unexpected shit, because shit happens. They may only be down for half an hour.

I mean, how long does it take those NSA guys to install shit in Dice's infrastructure?

Or maybe it's just a couple of bad routers they can't find that's screwing it up somehow, who knows?

You guys tone it down.
WordPress is challenging to some people.
Be mindful.

Smitty that is one of the funniest bits I've seen from you in some time. Can we work it into a burma shave troll as well? :)

I honestly don't remember the last time I read something on slashdot that someone wrote which truly honestly made me laugh out loud (not just stupid "OMG LOL" but honest real laughing).

We need more laughter in these dismal days, my friend.

I hope it's some "bad routers" being replaced that have been causing Slashdot's:

        * rejection of all but one HTTPS connections, site-wide, per user session;
        * banning of connections from Tor, within 1-5 minutes, even from logged-in registered users;
        * continuing lack of support for Unicode in... what is it now... [checks clock] twenty-fucking-thirteen? Wow, man.

Otherwise, I hope it's some bad admins being replaced.

Of all of the sites I frequent, this is the only one with more than one of the above issues — most have none of them.

I think many of us would agree that we come here for the comments, in which case Dice Holdings, Inc. is making money off of what we write here. I'm considering to attempt rallying up a temporary boycott of Slashdot in order for some users' grievances to possibly be addressed. Someone in charge knows about these problems, knows that many of us want (at least one of) them fixed, and know that they personally don't give a shit as long as those Benjamins keep flowing their way.

Replaced with what? I don't know that slashdot has any admins of their own anymore; I think they canned them some time ago. The place has just been on autopilot for some time from my vantage point.

I mostly come for the pie. That, and to see what conservatives are bitching about this week. I could of course accomplish that with the AM frequencies on my car stereo but the conservatives are slightly less loud here.

In my case I don't even have to go past the front page.

Use slashdot to organize a boycott of slashdot? I've certainly heard of crazier ideas on the internet. The challenge is getting the ACs to not post. That, and the fact that only a couple dozen people (at most) frequently read journal entries, so you don't have a very good recruiting tool for such an effort here since there is no direct user-to-user messaging and even if you can be the first post on every story for some time you still won't get that many people to read what you wrote.

Slashdot's slashdotting itself tomorrow.

So in other words slashdot will see 5 extra visitors and pat itself on the back? I'm not sure that any site of any consequence has been slashdotted in several years now... I've seen more sites taken down by google plus traffic in the past couple years than by slashdot traffic.
