Journal moncyb's Journal: Trolls murder CowboyNeal's blog 9

Very interesting.

Oh, BTW, it appears some trolls have been cutting and pasting old posts to build their karma. People mod them up anyway? Trolls also seem to be organizing on anti-slash.org. When you see them, foe them and throw them into the dungeon to be eaten by a grue. We'll have a barbecue! ;-)

  • Isn't foeing them rewarding them? Pissing people off is their goal, isn't it? This would let them know they are successful.
    • I don't think so. If you foe them, it is a hit against their posting score for you and everyone who is on your fans list (depending on prefs. I set foes to -6, and foes of friends to -2). If they have a lot of foes, people won't see their posts as much and they will be ignored.

Posters will notice the foe of friend marker and think "oh, that guy might be a troll, I won't feed him." Sometimes trolls will use a reasonable looking message to bait people, and if no one checks the guy's posting history, they wo

      • Here's the thing you're missing. People are inconsistent animals - from time to time, they will be assholes. Other times, they will have something insightful or interesting to say that isn't anywhere close to being what an asshole would say. By foeing someone, you are declaring that they will never have anything of importance to say to you. Since you obviously read at a threshold, why not just let typical moderation do the job?

Your foeing system is guaranteed to lead to you missing a foe's insightful commen

  • Isn't half of the fun in blogging getting replies? For me it is... A blog without comments has not much sense IHMO. The occasional Troll or AC that wanders through mine doesn't bother me at all. Hell, it's fun to reply sometimes.

Of course, CowboyNeal is well known personality and is probably assaulted by Trolls/Spammers and Flamers. I do understand his point (and I didn't even know he had a blog...)

Yeah, I don't see the point of it without feedback. Unless you just want a captive audience. The internet is not television. ;-)

I also don't get MsGeek at all. She claims she doesn't enable comments because of trolls, but if she just set posting to friends and friends of friends, trolls wouldn't be able to bother her.

and I didn't even know he had a blog...

He also made some music...don't remember where it is though...

  • ...there is hope for me yet. :-)

  • Well... i don't mind comments in my slashdot journal... except that if it got overrun by trolls, i'd feel about the same, a bit bothered, y'know? so i sort of agree.

I like it when people comment. Yes. And feedback is good. On the other hand, too much noise, and i'm too ticked to really hear what i want to listen to. I browse the comments on the front page stories with filters because the trolls really bother me.

I guess all i can say is that i'm glad that there are relatively few troll comments to my JEs.

  • I guess I don't worry too much about trolls, or at least not as much as the posters here. Thats the whole idea of moderating. I read at 0 and can filter down as I go. If an area is particularly trolled, I just temporarily set threshold to 2. I guess I EXPECT all the noise, being a free speech area, and focus on getting the most out of it, instead of trying to change it.

Ironically, I have gotten moderator points 3 times in the last month. As usual, I try to mod up 4 points, and down no more than 1 po
