IE Popup Spam

Chacham (981) writes | more than 10 years ago

User Journal 8

Just got a call. Someone got one of those popup porn spams, that puts itself in the favorites, takes over the homepage, redirects the active page every few minutes, and so on. I've actually cleared it from his computer before (by finding the resident program), though of late, they're getting tougher to beat.

He's tried AdAware and Spybot. Another friend had this and i tried and tried. Even reinstalled IE. We tried AdAware, Spybot, and others. None worked. XP's task manager didn't show anything suspicious running. He finally switched to Mozilla.

I'm scheduled to go and try to help this guy tomorrow, though i doubt i'll be able to do it, (unless the newsgroups help). I will probably switch him to Mozilla.

After searching the newsgroups last itme, all the resolutions didn't help. I wonder what they are exploiting.

Something else to try (0)

Did you try Spybot Search & Destroy? Good freebie that does a lot. Maybe this'll take care of the problem for you. HTH.

some of the newer malwares (1)

Coventry (3779) | more than 10 years ago | (#7900851)

Install themselves as part of the winsock stack - as a 'Layered Service Provider' - thus you don't see anything extra runing, since they are just a library called by the normal winsock services. These malware can act like a selective proxy, causing behaivor like you describe, and be tough to get rid of.

Whats worse, if you get rid of them the wrong way, they can fubar your winsock stack and cause all sorts of problems, such as preventing dhcp renewals.

I found a util that can remove many of these, don't let the urls fool you, its not a sex site, its a counter-exploitation site (antimalware, basicly), and the util checks out for virus free from mcaffee.

http://www.cexx.org/

The util you probably want is located at:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

The site also has a lot of links to anti-popup proxies and other software that may be useful.

I just found the site this evening while troubleshooting a problem of my sister's.

Thanx. Ran the bottom program for XP that it listed. Seemed to do the trick! (Except it didn't remove the search entries, but that was easily taken care of.)

Thanx so much.

Just got a call.

No subject.

He's tried AdAware of Spybot.

Is "of" supposed to be "and?"

Another friend had this and i tried and tried.

This one might be forgivable, as I believe most other languages capitalize "you" and and lowercase "I," but in English we are silly and capitalize "I" and lowercase "you."

I shouldn't throw stones either, since my home is mostly glass too. ;-)

On topic, if adaware doesn't get it, I usually just say reinstall, run windows update, and install mozilla. Relegate IE to the windows update only tool and use mozilla for web browsing. I had a friend from church get hit with something similar to this, but adaware cleaned it up pretty quick. I introduced her to mozilla and openoffice.org that day, and she has been pretty happy with it.

That's why it's a JE and not a story. :)

It gives it a more personal flavor when the subject, that refers to the writer, is missing. As if it a thought, and not just a story. And this isn't an excuse, it was intended.

Thanx! Corrected.

I wonder why i use different words when writing what i am thinking.

This one might be forgivable, as I believe most other languages capitalize "you" and and lowercase "I," but in English we are silly and capitalize "I" and lowercase "you."

I decided to give up on that. Unless it's at the beginning of a sentence. Discussed here [slashdot.org] and here [slashdot.org] .

I shouldn't throw stones either, since my home is mostly glass too. ;-)

Actually, that makes it so much more fun. :P

i bet /. editors would give a similar excuse. to them, slashdot is basically their journal. they see the millions of hits as meaning that their journal is very important and well respected, not as indication that /. has grown beyond being mr. malda's personal blog.
