Your $rtbl Story

Well, as I've been browsing around it seems that more and more people are dealing with the same situation that I am. So, if you've had experiences with the $rtbl, or just feel like talking about it, you might as well do it in my journal. It's as good of a place as any, really.

Explain $rtbl please... (1)

All I know is that there is a strong leftist presence amoungst moderators on slashdot. ANY opinion, no matter how clear or insightful it may be, iffin it deviates from views of the green/f*ck the man/Bush=Hitler crowd, you are guaranteed to get a flamebait, or some other negative rating.

Anymore, I just charge ahead into the subject and post my (conservative) views and let the chips fall where they may. On another end of the transaction, I try to moderate thoughtfully as possible, but I also pay very close attention to posts which were modded as flamebait or some other negative category, and as long as they aren't too over the top, I fix them.

The $rtbl is a tag that the editors put in their user database to revoke moderating capabilities and +1 karma bonuses (despite leaving the checkbox titled No Karma Bonus under the comment text area), regardless of karma rating. On a side note, mine has been rated as excellent for quite some time now.

Basically, it's a sneaky way for the editors to try and keep users that they don't like out of the mix without banning them or letting a user know that they don't like what they have to say.

I think that it's one of the most underhanded tactics that they use to maintain the strong leftist presence that you mentioned. It's rather sad of the editors, because I've even had leftists tell me how they think that what they're doing is wrong. It would seem that using the $rtbl tag goes directly against their principles, considering that they claim to be all for free speech.

They won't blatantly censor you, but it's apparent that, if you go against the grain, they will do everything that they can think of to hinder your participation.

Sounds like "73h 5ux0rz".

I'm currently a foe of CmdrTaco, I post right-wing stuff, and I still have my Excellency and my bonus.

Probably not forever, but hey... it comes to pass.

Maybe it's time to move to another site...

Auto-rtbl (0)

I haven't looked at slashcode either but there are rumors of an auto-rtbl if you get modded down too many times in a certain time period. No matter how much you reraise your karma you never get +1, mod, or m2 again. Looking at your posting history you made posts at the following times that were all modded down,

Monday January 12, @10:16PM
Monday January 12, @08:51PM
Monday January 12, @07:16PM
Sunday January 11, @05:18PM
Sunday January 11, @05:14PM

There's 6 downmods in just over 2 days. I can't see any further back than the 11th. But if this is indicative of your general posting history, or if something similar happened in a short period before you noticed something weird was going on, you probably made the auto rtbl from downmods.

I know for a fact there was (and may still be) an auto temp IP ban if you get 4 different posts modded down within 24 hours. The system figures you're a troll and gives you the pink page of death for awhile.

Well, if my memory serves me correctly, I started out posting in the positive-good range, then dropped down to the bad-terrible range (mostly because of having posts modded funny along with overrated mods). That stayed a bit, but then I started to get a good amount of recognition for my serious posts, bringing me up to excellent. I've been at excellent for a good while now.

Often times, however, many of my individual posts' fluctuate in point value quite a bit. That mostly occurs when I post something having to do with political issues.

Also, I'm pretty sure that I've had four different post modded down in a 24 hour period, yet I've never received the pink page.

I really can't confirm whether or not I fell victim to an auto-rtbl because I've never been able to receive the benefits of having excellent karma in the first place. I am asked to metamoderate, but I doubt that it has any affect considering the other factors.

Regardless, if the rumors are true, the auto-rtbl would have to be in contention for the worst thing that Slashdot has done with their service.
