Journal jdifool's Journal: Questionning the system 5

At some point reading too much of /. becomes expensive for your health.

So you decide to spend 15 minutes on /. some days in the week, and nonetheless you can fall on awkward moments.

So as today.

This guy is a f$%&ing karma whore. He posted some comments with a sig pointing to tubgirl.com. The cunning troll decided to post some well designed and mainstrean thought messages that immediately got modded up. Fine ; some moderators are stupid, and that's it. We got stupidity everywhere. Some alert users detected the trick. I guess I was one of them. Not that much reaction from moderation, and obviously the guy decided to remove the sig. He keeps posting, and my anonymous warnings are modded down flamebait.

Today it's raining. Sometimes I would say mankind is bound to fail, and that very type of event is the hell epitomy of our little weaknesses that make boulders, boulders, boulders, nukes, and boom. I'm sick of this site where too few want to accept that complexity is to be taken care of.

Some volunteers for building up a new site ? :_)

  • Just wondering, how serious are you about setting up a new site? It sounds like a fun project. I would suggest, however, not creating a slashdot clone and limit the topics a little more. I don't have any monetary resources (or servers) to dedicate, but I can dedicate my time if the project seems worthy.
    • Hi,

this is a big deal to build a new site, I admit. And this is even a bigger deal not to cave in because of /. popularity. Look kuro5hin.

I think most people can cope with the albeit huge mistakes and drawbacks slashdot developped in time. The fact is that I can't.

If I could find some people interested in the project and that can help me learning to do, and doing the thing, why not. It would be fun, indeed.

      • But this is to be thought thoroughly. Share some ideas ? Mine would be less American-centric, with some good newbie documentation, and an automated anti-troll thing. Those are all interesting ideas. However, I beleive the most pressing issue in creating a new site is creating a more intimate venue with a small number of members. I think this would foster more extended discussions and individuals would tend to be more respectful as everyone would remember you if you're not. I would also like to be able t
        • One more thing... I have some time I should be able to devote now, but that might not be the case in a couple of months as the semester gets into full swing. Of course, my schedule will be calmer again in mid May. Just FYI. Have you though at all about how you might go about setting such a site up?
