It's cold comfort to be three fucking rocks away from beating Sokoban, only to have a fucking OWLBEAR show up out of nowhere, and whack 70 fucking hit fucking points right off you in one fucking turn.

Gods, I love this fucking game. >:-)

What the hell are you talking about?

Don't worry ericdano, he doesn't know either. Funny thing though - if you pay attention the only time he really writes a JE is to call attention to himself and about something 'elite' he's done. Wil is nothing but a washed up elitist child star and nothing else. He has to post something every now and then to boost his own sagging ego. :) Truth hurts doesn't it Wil you bitch?

Hmm. You think a person with a handle like "UnCleverNickName" could possibly be a little too obsessed?
I mean, I greatly dislike the perceived personality of Jim Carrey, even though I like the majority of his movies; If I adopted a nickname on the lines of JimCarreySucks, a normal person would think I was FUCKING NUTS.

Whereas you are nothing but a washed up crack whore.

Moderator: If the parent is flamebait, then what was *its* parent? You are unworthy of moderator privilege. Don't expect to be granted it again.

It's been a while since I've played Nethack. I'll probably start again next month, after I'm finished moving - if I start before, I'll never get packed.

You do? (1)

Tomble (579119) | more than 10 years ago | (#8132095)

In that case, maybe you'd like Porrog [angelfire.com] ?

OK, so maybe you wouldn't (it is pretty alpha right now and has no point whatsoever yet). Sorry to spam, I was just passing through and saw the references to the genre of genres... (plus I was bored; couldn't help myself; the moomins told me to do it; I'm from a deprived background; unreasonable provocation; something)

Was there... (1)

D-Cypell (446534) | more than 10 years ago | (#8134066)

...a holodeck port of nethack?

That would have been pretty cool!

Just wait until you find a wand of wishing on level one (first room, even) -- then you'll have a real top ten list ;)

Hmm, speaking of which, I have a neutral human wizard somewhere around the castle with everything he could possibly want (+Poly, tons of food, -42 or so AC, several "oLS, neutral with all the good Quest Artifacts, full ascention kit, etc. etc. etc. ...)

It's not my first ascention any more, though, so... (soon, the top 10 should be nothing but ascentions.. and maybe that illiterate valk who died of brainlessness [mmf] at Moloch's... *ugh*)

How?! (1)

Exocet (3998) | more than 9 years ago | (#8159619)

Maybe I am just a Nethack neophyte (true) but how in the hell did you manage 20k points? The best I've done is about 12k.

I usually play a human male neutrally-aligned Wizard. I have problems, though, making it past about level six or seven (the gnomish mines). I'm hoping to find a "playing a Wizard in Nethack" type FAQ. As I read more FAQ's I'm slowly learning useful things, but it's still frustrating to die by level three or four (usually).

BTW: Thank you for getting me re-addicted to Nethack.

Set up your defaults.nh to autostart you with a neutral human healer. When you start, check \ to see if any of the potions (other than full healing, which you don't yet have) are smoky. If so, quaff them all & hope for a wish. Wish for blessed +3 silver dragon scale mail. Blessed fixed +3 speed boots if you are lucky enough to get two wishes (unlikely). If you didn't get any wishes, play until you die (not long at your skill level) or just start a new game. This should make it a tad easier to survive.

Also, when choosing cloaks, you should wear any cloak you can get at first, but when you can, make sure you wear one of these: cloak of magic resistance, elven cloak or an oilskin cloak. I prefer the last one since I usually have stealth + magic resistance from other sources (stealth from praying, MR from a quest artifact I've wished for, like they Platinum Yendorian Express Card, or the eye of the Aeothica [sp?] ... I wish for the Orb of Fate, too, when I can get it for the half damage [and thus I avoid creating artifacts via prayer until I have the castle wand]).

Read the spoilers if you want the nitty-gritty details of why that strategy is good (it doesn't hurt to play an older version of NH where #invoking those quest artifacts you wish for doesn't hurt you, either...). Suffice it to say that I have several ascentions under my belt, even though most were the result of early wishes, and I owe most of the strategic insight to spoilers and comments from the r.g.r.n newsgroup.
