It's cold comfort to be three fucking rocks away from beating Sokoban, only to have a fucking OWLBEAR show up out of nowhere, and whack 70 fucking hit fucking points right off you in one fucking turn.

Gods, I love this fucking game. >:-)

  • What the hell are you talking about?
  • It's been a while since I've played Nethack. I'll probably start again next month, after I'm finished moving - if I start before, I'll never get packed.
  • In that case, maybe you'd like Porrog [angelfire.com]?

OK, so maybe you wouldn't (it is pretty alpha right now and has no point whatsoever yet). Sorry to spam, I was just passing through and saw the references to the genre of genres... (plus I was bored; couldn't help myself; the moomins told me to do it; I'm from a deprived background; unreasonable provocation; something)

  • ...a holodeck port of nethack?

That would have been pretty cool!

Maybe I am just a Nethack neophyte (true) but how in the hell did you manage 20k points? The best I've done is about 12k.

I usually play a human male neutrally-aligned Wizard. I have problems, though, making it past about level six or seven (the gnomish mines). I'm hoping to find a "playing a Wizard in Nethack" type FAQ. As I read more FAQ's I'm slowly learning useful things, but it's still frustrating to die by level three or four (usually).

BTW: Thank you for getting me re-addicted to Nethack.
    • Set up your defaults.nh to autostart you with a neutral human healer. When you start, check \ to see if any of the potions (other than full healing, which you don't yet have) are smoky. If so, quaff them all & hope for a wish. Wish for blessed +3 silver dragon scale mail. Blessed fixed +3 speed boots if you are lucky enough to get two wishes (unlikely). If you didn't get any wishes, play until you die (not long at your skill level) or just start a new game. This should make it a tad easier to surv
