Journal Frater 219's Journal: My question for John Kerry 7

From time to time in our nation, religion and religious faith have become contentious political issues. While we may prefer (as I certainly do) that religion remain a private matter and outside of politics, this is not always possible. Important political movements such as Abolitionism, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Civil Rights movement, and more recently the Religious Right have all sprung from the nexus of religion and politics. We cannot, therefore, ignore or set aside candidates' religious views and practices when considering them for the Presidency.

My question is this: What religious view were you and President Bush expressing -- what religion were you practicing -- when, as undergraduates at Yale University you both bowed down to an idol of the Prince of Darkness? As members of the Brotherhood of Death, or Order of Skull and Bones, you both participated in rituals explicitly Satanic in tenor and content. Does this fact leave you prepared to govern a nation whose populace is majority Christian, most of whom believe that the Devil is quite real and active in the world?

We can all see from every day's headlines the result of electing one member of the Brotherhood of Death to the presidency. Why in the world -- or in the underworld, perchance? -- should we suffer another to ascend to that seat?

My question for John Kerry

  • I wouldn't put much faith into the Skull and Bones Society's existence, as well as any alleged list of its members. Neither of those reference in your journal entry are really that credible: The first reference contains expletives and treats sarcasm by Bush and Kerry as facts. The other reads more as entertainment than good, dry journalism). In fact, I haven't seen any article about the Skull and Bones Society that holds up to scrutiny; almost everything was written with entertainment-prose, vague or un

That's hilarious. Yale University [yale.edu] seems to think that the Order of Skull and Bones exists. But then, its "crypt" is on Yale property, so what would they know?

      • Admittedly without citing any references, I have read a little bit about the Order of Skill and Bones, and I think there is ample evidence to suggest that they do exist; however, Frater I am not sure how relevant your question really is.

Reason being, you make the assumption that The Order's "devil" is in fact to be taken literally and seriously as "the devil" and that the majority of American Christians would be concerned about the musings of some college-age boys in any event--nevermind the fact that they
      • I stand corrected on the club's existence, but I am a little hurt by you thinking it is hilarious that I was wrong. It's not nice to laugh at others for something so minor. Especially, when your journal references were of such poor quality. What's wrong with you? :-(

On the other hand, the CBS article does little to persuade me of the conspiracy theories about the secret society. This piece is little more than an interview of a moderate, an "insider," and a journalist who is self-described as obsessive.

        • Yes, this is a fallacy - attacking the source

OK, you admit it. Now, quit it.

There are facts here which nobody seriously disputes: John Kerry and George W. Bush belong to the same fraternal organization, which even its host institution (Yale) describes as a secret society. That organization's members swear oaths of loyalty to each other and the organization. They also, according to all available reports, participate in particular rituals. The symbology of these rituals is such that the religions which

Are you seriously suggesting that GWB's faults (which IMHO are grevious and numerous) stem from his supposed membership of this supposed occult group?

No. But (to be snarky about it) people who play at necromancy usually have other character flaws. I suspect that, as with Hollywood's infestation with Scientology, certain American political families get the religion they deserve; one which is symbolic of their actual -- dare I say it? -- family values.

What are you asking? In order to be a good presiden
