Journal Cliff's Journal: The Zen Garden of Content Style Sheets 7

So maybe I'm just behind, but I've found the CSS Zen Garden to be one of the best examples of what CSS can do. Why more websites haven't embraced CSS (let's not mention Slashdot, please) amazes me. Of course, CSS does look more verbose than HTML, and I'm wondering if there are any editors out there that can generate compliant CSS that validates while providing a visual interface to the user.

What CSS sites have you seen that push the envelope and make good use of the technology?

With CSS having this kind of capabilities, do you think XHTML/CSS will bring anything new or useful to the table?

It has some very cool stuff on it. Some of them are not completely cross-browser compatable however.

Short answer to your question on editors. I've found none that can quickly work up a good CSS style sheet in any type of intuitive manner. Dreamweaver does kinda ok, but you're best off just setting up your style sheet, making some content and loading it in a browser.

I think /. will eventually move to CSS just to cut down on bandwidth usage and server load, when that will be, who knows. Tables
  • I've actually (since the zengarden came out) been thinknig of setting something like this up for the slashcss theme.

    Anyone want to help?

Now c'mon. Did this really surprise you? ;)

Oops! Forgot the NAVY rule. Ah well, I'm a masochist for this kind of stuff.

      • Ok, head over to lottadot [lottadot.com]. I just posted a story about the latest slashcss incarnation. Checkout the info and let me know what you think so far.

  • Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 works quite nicely with CSS, I've heard. The best way is still to hand-code it, though - easier, IMO.

As for good CSS sites, check out this article at mezzoblue [mezzoblue.com]. Stopdesign [stopdesign.com], SimpleBits [simplebits.com], and A List Apart [alistapart.com] are also great resources.
  • Here's [cheveril.com.au] a ton of links from my bookmarks. The first section are design-related blogs that I read regularly, the next section is just a handful off useful CSS/XHTML/Design links. The large chunk following the "Colours" section is unsorted and may contain some crud - it's just what I pulled from my "Explore later" bookmarks folder.

Hope some of this turns out to be useful...
