User Journal 9

The fact that slashboxes have stopped working and I didn't see links for writing journals in the beta has me thinking that the site will move away from the level of personalization that it had before. So I'm thinking through what I'll do as a replacement. The idea I keep coming back to is I may go ahead and use a subreddit as my new journal. It would be a place I could post - people could follow it and respond if they were interested. It's possible to set one up so that people can read and co

It would be a place I could post - people could follow it and respond if they were interested. It's possible to set one up so that people can read and comment but they can't submit posts themselves - basically what the slashdot journal is.

That seems the easiest. I have my blog too - but I've always liked having a 'spot' that is part of something bigger where I can post like this.

Clearly angling for a federal bailout here (1)

But I'm not sure /. can deliver the needed votes.

I never did that reddit thing. Didn't really check out the beta either.

Does http://slashdot.org/journal.pl... [slashdot.org] not work either?

Writing journals is not set up in the beta. If I go to my profile - there are links for comments, submissions and journals - so maybe they plan to implement it.

But I'm just not sure of the future of the overall platform. These changes make me wonder if the days for the site are numbered. I'm backing up all my journal entries so I don't lose any and then making sure I have a place to go if things come apart.

Backup, good point, i ought to do that.

Slashdot has been around almost two decades now. While it isn't what it was, it is something. A major change will likely hurt, but i don't think will kill it. Nerds are younger and different, maybe they need the change.

I hope you are right - I just want to keep my options open. I'd much rather just keep doing my thing here.

I am mostly inactive here. I stopped reading the front page [slashdot.org] some time ago. As to JEs, "I sometimes write them to write. I many times write them for replies."/A> [slashdot.org]

It's come up before, how to backup JE posts. Maybe i should do that now. Do you have a script you are willing to share?

I never think the Journal thing works (1)

Taco Cowboy (5327) | about 6 months ago | (#46453413)

I have posted some journals, but for one reason or another, I can't see my own journals, and I have no idea if anybody else could see mine either.

I do see others' journal, occasionally, so I have no idea if what I see represent the entire collection of journals posted by the users, or only a very tiny portion of the total journal population.

I see a bunch of journal entries under your account. If you go to https://slashdot.org/journal.p... [slashdot.org] but put in your user id instead of mine you should get a list of your entries. I do think there is a limit on how many will show up (or how far it will let you look back) if you don't have a subscription. With a subscription you can go back through them all.
