Well, there was this thing called Beta... (Score:2)
...which, if you're still in classic mode, you can lay eyeballs on by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.
And there was considerable reaction to it, much if not most of which was negative, and there was a very corporate-speak laden reaction to that by the editors here or the people who sign their checks and tell them what to write, and that led to the Slashcott and the creation of some new "Slashdot-ish" sites by some of the refugees from here.
And that was just in February.

The RSS feed is pretty light on bandwidth, too.
And Opera's Turbo mode, or similar bandwidth-saving proxies do a pretty good job these days.

...then we had the Slashdot beta, which kinda sucks.
On the bright side, I don't see any GNAA trolls anymore. And just this week, I read someone mention Natalie Portman and hot grits in the same sentence.
Although, lately, I find io9 to be more fun than Slashdot (which, unfortunately, has indeed jumped the shark, thanks to dice).
