Journal cptgrudge's Journal: Update 7

I thought that I should update my journal since the ebay auction for mfh's account is over. Perhaps I should clarify my thoughts on this somewhat, since other slashdot users seem to think that I believe that low UIDs have some sort of "power", "authority", or "credibility". I do not. My problem is that low UID accounts are being sold with the notion that the account actually gives "street cred" when it does not. Maybe for new users to slashdot this is the case in their mind, even if it's subconscious, but most of them wise up quickly. All slashdot users know that this is the truth. Something about the irony of it all irritates me.

Dougman is one of my foes. Here is why.

I think the purpose of the Zoo is to make friends/foes based on the content philosophies of you and that user... kind of like a compatibility meter or something to that effect.

If you know me and dislike me, make me a foe.

If you make me a foe because you are jealous of my tiny UID, then you are a fool and you likely belong on my foes list. I've been slashdotting since day one, and I only made an account in the late 90's. I've always wanted to have a smaller UID just for the hell of it... I have always thou
  • I posted another story last nite that was accepted today. Intel Sued for Patent Infringement [slashdot.org] has just gone live.

I guess the problem I have with your crusade against people buying low UIDs, is that it's an entirely uninformed opinion. I think it's baseless to suggest that anyone who buys a low UID will only use it to seem important, because these accounts are part of slashdot history. The previous owner of my UID wasn't using his acct at all, and when he was, it was primarily in the Apple section. My intere
    • It isn't personally against you, or the current dougman. I don't have a problem with the person that bought the account, not at all. I have no problem that you as a person can make a worthwhile contribution to the slashdot community. I'm doing it so that in the future, a person may think twice before trying to sell or buy an account, because the account will acquire a bunch of foes. There's no way for me to "retaliate" in some small way against the original owner of the account, so unfortunately the onl

You just want it to be apparent that the person bought the acct? Well I can see how that would seem like the right thing to do for many, but the best slashdot users tag friends & foes based on merit alone, not fan-clubs/foe-clubs. I personally think it's lame to foe someone because of some side note, that the Zoo is more or less meant for how you feel about the peopl

          Yes, maybe...more on that later.

Yep. This is correct, most of the time for me too. Everybody has their own uses for the system.

I'm going to answer this all a little out of order...

            > Did it occur to you that I'm generating discussion about this topic for another reason? That I might have another account that I'll be selling?

CmdrTaco? Is that you? Tee Hee!

            > Yep. This is correct, most of the time for me too. Everybody has their own uses for the system.

I agree and so it should be. No system should have only one methodology behind it, or it's too constricting. I think it's neat you've decided to use your Zoo to raise the i

I wonder how much my UID is worth. :)
