I am running out of old games to play. I tried BG2 again, getting a little farther than the first time, but ran outta steam. Tried Fallout2 again, but lost steam. I jumped into Deus Ex:IW again, but it doesn't really have a lot of replayability. Thought about DX1, but played that too many times (and too recently), SS2 is too boring in the beginning, and I've played it FAAAR too many times. Tribes2... too much of a learning curve and I'm waaaaaay behind everyone else.

I want a game I can just jump in and start killing things. The two online games I've been playing recently have their problems, though.
AVP2 - great fun but most servers have people that are crack shots with the sniper rifle (1-hit kills), and its got hackers all over the place.
Infiltration - since its a UT mod (not UT2k4), there are only 2 servers that ever have people on it, and its old enough that the only people that still play are the best, and its kinda boring for someone who hasn't played in enough months to be very rusty.

Of course, I'd like to go get myself a newer game, but I really don't want to drop anything over $30 for it (especially when I'll be dropping $40 on Theif3 soon). Any good online game that's simply a fun fragfest? Don't say CS... far too boring (played it from Beta 6 until a year or so ago... it just got boring, and I'm sick of de_dust). What'd be nice is a good co-op game... the original AVP had a game where you play as marine or pred and the computer just sent hordes of aliens at you. Instant stress relief in seconds...

    *warning, even though it's cartoonish and all in good fun, I don't recommend this as being work safe.
    • I don't think the title is that misleading... I need more carnage, but can't keep up with the kiddies to make it fun for me (I used to be good at pretty much any game). Best choice is to get a new game, and at least be in the middle of the pack.

      Also, the mortgage, wife, child, carpayment thing makes it difficult not only to find time to play games (most evenings I get an hour or so), but to afford dropping $50 on something I don't have a lot of time to play.

    • That's what I used to do... was looking at UT2k4... mostly because UT is known for having a good amount of mods I could install and tryout...

      But if I drop the cash on UT2k4, I'd have to wait like a month to pickup theif3.... tough choices, but I mess around with demos tonight. Thanks for the idea.
      • it's down to $34 shipped [newegg.com] from newegg. i guess that's still over the $30 limit, but it beats $40 or $50.

        if you just need something to tide you over, the demo might be enough. you only get one map for each of the game types, but that can provide a lot of good gaming.
  • May I suggest the excellent Enemy Territory? It's free, and the sniper rifles are not one shot kills, unless you get a headshot (which is quite hard). Objective-based, teamplay (kind of co-opish), based on an updated Q3 engine - what more could you ask for? I'm not sure what the online community is like in the US, but you could always play on 202.61.227.145 if you can stand the lag.
    • Iv'e played enemy territory before. Heavy learning curve, but as I started learning how to play, I kept getting stuck in games where the enemy had so much control, they were spawncamping. Happened all day one saturday. Got annoyed, stopped playing.

      I'd give it another whirl if they stopped the spawncamping.
  • have you tried tron 2.0? these days it's only about $20 most places. i got it from an amazon zshop seller for $10 + shipping, for a total of something like $13.50.

    i haven't played multiplayer, but the single player experience is great. you get to throw discs and race light cycles. it really feels like being in the tron movie. you get to de-rez programs all over, but there's more to it to keep the plot interesting as well.

  • I appreciate the "just wanna kill stuff" urge and whenever it strikes, I fire up Doom II. Kill some imps, get the shotgun, chainsaw and rocket launcher, get to level 2, get to that little building/ourtyard cluster -- and it's all shooting from there. Strictly single-player these days, though.

    As an aging person, I do suck, though. My thumbs are sore from spending a few hours Saturday trying to land a 50/50 to 180 off in Tony Hawk that I can actually do pretty smoothly on skis in real life.

  • You might want to check out Delta Force: Black Hawk Down [novalogic.com] ($30) and the Expansion Pack Team Sabre [novalogic.com] ($20).
    They also have a 'Platinum Pack' with both games and the demo of Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising [novalogic.com].

    Anyway, with BHD, the online play is pretty good. It will take a week or two to figure out which character you'll want to go with (Medic, CQB, Gunner or Sniper) and which weapon you'll want to use.

  • Natural selection is GREAT. I just got off it. Half life mod, based on aliens. Part FPS, Part RTS. Faitly standard teams, the nano-armoured Frontiersmen and the organic ship infesting Kharaa. it gets interesting as the teams fight for control of resource nodes to collect nano-assembler goo to build weapons.   • i am at work and can't download it, but i just read something about a game called cube [cubeengine.com]. it is an open source game with quake like gameplay. at least that's what they say.
