I hear that gmail is now doing the 'invite' thang. So who's gonna send me an invite? (joshmarotti {at} yahoo.com).I hear that gmail is now doing the 'invite' thang. So who's gonna send me an invite? (joshmarotti {at} yahoo.com).

Maybe we should setup an invite list?

A friend of mine IM'ed me today (internal IM, damnit...s till can't do outgoing). He asked "What's up with GMail? How can they give away a gig of space?" I proceeded to tell him everything (I've read up on it quite a bit), then asked him why he asked "Oh, I just got an account." Bastard... aparently, you can't invite until after a while, but ars technica has an invite list setup, and he signed up for the hell of it.

There's actually a site where people are shilling for an invite. I forget what the stakes have been, but some are like $100, I think I saw one guy give someone a week in a Hawaii house or something.

Here [gmailswap.com] is gmail swap. Check it out.

They're going for less than $5 on eBay now.

And me with about 5 e-mail accounts now. No, not at GMail.

Besides, who wants version 1.0? We all know how that turned out with Orkut. ;)

Re:invite me, too! (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399576)

I thought the problem with Orkut was the users -- are they still under development too?

Re:invite me, too! (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399180)

I got the ability to send three invites yesterday and used them up quickly, as you might imagine.

FK, you would have got one from me if you were on AIM at any time yesterday

Em, I'll keep you in mind for next time (if there is a next time)

Saige (53303) | more than 10 years ago | (#9398826)

Think how much press it would do GMail for this person in the employ of the evil empire to drop hotmail for GMail?

So I must have an invite, clearly! :)

I will say this much, the folks over at Google know how to make a site desirable to so many people - just make it so you only start out with a small number of people using it, and let them slowly get other people to join. They managed to get a lot of people wanting on Orkut by doing so, and now the same with GMail.

Reminds me of the Simpsons where there were all the banners and bilboards for the product that had not yet been delivered so all the people wanted it because it was so mysterious.

I think the product turned out to be gum, but I can't remember. Any one? Try looking through The Simpsons Archive [snpp.com]

Still need a gmail invite? (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9430561)

Still need one?

Re:Still need a gmail invite? (1)

FortKnox (169099) | more than 10 years ago | (#9430768)

I just emailed her a few minutes ago (I have 4 invites I'm trying to pass out).

Had any trouble emailing/inviting people with hotmail? I hear they are blocking gmail accounts (my bro never got my invite through hotmail)... and yahoo pushes the invites into the 'spam' folder. Crazy, eh?

Re:Still need a gmail invite? (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9434245)

The invite appears in your "sent mail" in gmail, so you can always get them the URL some other way.

1 gig of mail (1)

Aggrazel (13616) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399182)

Think of this. 90% of email is spam. But this spam may be repetitive. Gmail could deliver spam to people and then just link to an inode of where the one spam is for billions of accounts. Think of the compression! :)

I have 3 invites (1)

neverkevin (601884) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399241)

I have 3 gmail invites but I can't tell who on this thread has got them and I don't want to send an invite to someone who already has one. Did FortKnox, grub, Abm0raz get an invite yet? (thoes were the first 3 I believe)

Re:I have 3 invites (1)

neverkevin (601884) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399277)

PS I have been using gmail for a while now, and by far it is the best free web email out there, and I am not really a fan of their search engine.

Abm0raz (668337) | more than 10 years ago | (#9399422)

As of the posting of this message, i haven't gotten an invite.

Got the second invite to my work account. Thanks. Now I have abmoraz@.... for 17 different free-mail systems. :) Though, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that uses this moniker since I made it up myself.

-Ab

ps. the reason i don't have it here is that I created an abmoraz account and forgot it's password and the email account associated with it is no longer valid (my old college email).

I have 2 gmail invites up at my site ( http://overcaffeinated.net [overcaffeinated.net] ) and will award them to the most amusing personal stories/jokes. So, if FK or some other of this journal's visitors want one, feel free to drop by and leave a story. =)

Yeah, I'd take one. (1)

TechnoLust (528463) | more than 10 years ago | (#9400658)

slashdot [AT} bellsouth )DOT( net if anyone is feeling generous. I'd let Boo have it because she keeps having to delete stuff from her Hotmail account because of the 2MB limit. I've got like 6 email addys anyway. Good grief, I'm willing to give her my GMail invite, I must really love her. :-)

Re:Yeah, I'd take one. (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9400999)

When you set up your gmail account, you are automatically added to the addressbook of the person who invited you -- so this would reveal Boo's identity (or at least her e-mail address) to at least one slashdotter. Just so you're aware.

Having said that, you're on my waiting list :-)

Re:Yeah, I'd take one. (1)

Re:Yeah, I'd take one. (1)

turg (19864) | more than 10 years ago | (#9403790)

Sure. But it's getting longish. I just got the ability to send invites for the first time the other day, after using gmail for about six weeks, and I only got three then.

I'll just use the one FK sent me and by the time I'm able to get the info to her, I'll probably have received invitations myself. Thanks, though.

and here I stand (1)

sparky4 (695739) | more than 10 years ago | (#9423690)

off to the side wondering what all of the hullabaloo is about. I have just made a second email account for myself ( hubby helped by doing it for me while I watched and learned ). What does a person do with multiple accounts I wonder ... is this the computer version of never having enough purses or shoes. ( of which I have 3 and 7 pairs )

Re:and here I stand (1)

FortKnox (169099) | more than 10 years ago | (#9428936)

I have a 'home account' that I recieve at home, and a webaccount that I can get emails from people for work (my work email is strictly for the biz, not for personal emails).
