I'm hungry, I'm tired, and my father's sitting there, half pissed because it's been 3+ weeks since graduation, and I haven't written thank-you notes, and half laughing his ass off, because I can't get CUPS to print properly on a custom size. Goddamnit.

Humiliation, or, Is CUPS still too complicated?

  • You should try to make XP Pro share a printer over the network with an XP Home, 98SE and 95 box. The XP Home sees it and prints just fine. The 98 and 95 sees the XP Pro machine itself, but no shares. Accessing the machien give an Error 55 - "The network resource you're trying to reach is not talking to me and it makes me sad". Tried \\name\printer, tried \\i.p.add.ress\printer, tried simple filesharing, tried fucking complex filesharing, tried NetBEUI, TCP/IP and even IPX/SPX. No change.

    I'm leaning towar

    • The official driver has only a few paper sizes hardcoded. I had a better chance of making CUPS work. The solution I used was to find paper that actually fit a traditional or ISO standard size.

      You don't realize how complicated going from screen to paper is until you look at what's involved in its entirety.

      At one point I was so frustrated, I was about to try to rewrite the whole document in raw postscript.

Always draw your curves, then plot your reading.
