Journal orthogonal's Journal: Microsoft MSN Slate Columnist: Drop IE for Firefox 8

(This was rejected by the Slashdot editors when I submitted it. It's not a dupe is it?)

Slate, the flagship "webzine" of Microsoft's MSN website, has published a column by Paul Boutin advising Microsoft Internet Explorer users to drop IE for Mozilla Firefox because "hackers continue to find and exploit security holes in [Internet] Explorer". Boutin isn't planning to go back, either, he says: "I've been using [Firefox] for a week now, and I've all but forgotten about [Internet] Explorer." He even helpfully links to a Firefox .xpi to make installing Sun's Java VM easy for new Firefox users.

Microsoft MSN Slate Columnist: Drop IE for Firefox

  • [microsoft] won the browser war, so why keep fighting it?

I think this really highlights the MS thought process. They don't care about improving the user experience, merely crushing the competition. To me this reveals the value of OSS, which strives for self improvement not simply from monetary gain but from actual desire to provide a compelling solution.

    • Also, why are MS apologists so quick to theorize that they're targets of security issues because they have majority marketshare, but fall silent when Apache vs IIS is brought up?
  • I read it yesterday and was thinking of submitting it, but I changed my mind, because I thought "for sure someone else has by now". It was too juicy to ignore. Maybe they will post it later.

I must see a good half a dozern a day I'd like to see posted, but I DOUBT I will get one posted until after I have been given mod points. I did try to get the japanese super magnetic motor article posted, but I did it as an ac, and it didn't get talked about for a few weeks after I first read it. I wonder what happened

      What are mod points?

Despite have had "Excellent" Karma for the last two years running, and generally having more than 10 "+5"s in my last 24 comments, -- and being a subscriber -- I haven't gotten mod points since January.

January was when I criticized Cmdr Taco [slashdot.org], for supporting DirecTV (and thus DirecTV's baseless lawsuits), in a comment on an "Ask Slashdot" Taco himself had written, asking for advice [slashdot.org].

      That comment got modded down,
      • Hell, I've been on here for years and I've only gotten mod points twice the entire time.

I figure there'sa random factor involved. I've never been sucessful at games of chance.

      • Seriously, this is my biggest gripe about slashdot... I hear this kind of story all the time. Maybe it's time to give technocrat.net a chance, but I would miss the excitement here. It would be like going from the House of Lords to the US Congress.... I'd miss all the shouting and invective. :-)
      • I even posted an entry in my journal about mod points (or serious lack thereof) not too long ago. I seriously used to get them all the time. It got to the point where I would end up not using them since I got them so often, perhaps that hosed me forever? Either that or I pissed off the wrong person (or people, since I at least seem to have attracted some folks who without fail mod my posts down). Oh well, es la vida (or somesuch crap like that).
