Bug Fix [Updated!]

User Journal 10

I'm a little behind in my current project, which isn't cost prohibitive, but schedule prohibitive (like... this needs to come into compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley by July 31st, no exceptions!). Of course, a bug from something I fixed months ago pops up. Worked ALL DAY LONG on it.

Just fixed it.

I changed 1 character.

I literally cost this place a ton of money for my time.... to change 1 character.

I'm just glad today isn't monday.I'm a little behind in my current project, which isn't cost prohibitive, but schedule prohibitive (like... this needs to come into compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley by July 31st, no exceptions!). Update: Many asked what the bug was:
There was a date array. I referenced date[1] when I should have referenced date[0]. So I changed a 1 to a 0.

One of those bastard quotes? Or a =? The equals will nail you every time... :)

Semicolon is my guess. Those little rascals just are incorrigible!

Yeah, I had one of those bug fixes Wed. I changed a '' and saved us about $30,000 (on paper). :-)

Ganked from the web but still applies (1)

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical. After serving his company loyally for over 30 years, he happily retired. Several years later the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multi-million dollar machines.

They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past.

The engineer reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small "x" in chalk on a particular component of the machine and stated, "This is where your problem is."

The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again.

The company received a bill for $50,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized accounting of his charges.

The engineer responded briefly:

One chalk mark $ 1. Knowing where to put it $49,999.

It was paid in full and the engineer retired again in peace.

So you may have cost the company a lot of money, but knowing what character to change is where the value comes in.

What they didn't tell you... (1)

The check made payable to the engineer had "PAyed under protest" written on it, and he was the ntaken to court in a long and drawn out battle. All of his $50,000 was spent in a whirlwind of legal bills. The day before he died, the court found in favor of the Big company.

Yeah, I wish he'd tell us which character it is. Then we could go remove that character from all our programs too. It's like FK wants us to go through the same frustration that he did. Sheesh.

Had us crazy all day Friday.
'Fixed' it by putting a n=Math.random() string at the end of the URL.
Fucking Internet Explorer.

You always gotta screw up some little mundane detail, like putting a period in the wrong place!

Heh. I do the same shit from time to time. I blame working ahead of my fingers in my mind.
