I think that you can get mod points if you have positive karma, and then throw in a bunch of messed up algorithms to determine when you get them. At least, that's what I've noticed, I may be wrong.

As for spending your mod points? Do what I do, fight groupthink! Whenever I see a genuinely insightful post that goes against what everyone else thinks (MS isn't evil in the ways you state, Apple isn't the second coming of Jesus, GNU/Linux isn't ready for the home user and most likely never will be, etc), I upmod

Can I post yet? Yes! No explanatory letter from the editors, but I think writing to Cowboy Neal and Taco definitely helped. I wrote to Taco before when themes.org changed to themes.freshmeat.net and Slashdot sadly didn't update their link for months until I wrote in and told him some of us still *used* Linux and would he mind fixing the link since it had been broken since 07/12/02 or whatever; he fixed it the same day or the day after he got the email.
