Journal FortKnox's Journal: The Greatest Question In The WORLD! 32

You know when you are walking down the hall, or through the cube farm, you are always hugging the right side, letting people pass you (going the other way) on the left?

In England, do walk on the opposite side in the hallway (do you hug the right side)?
Ethelred... do you guys[1] go as fast as you want, usually running just cause you can??

[1] - Ethelred, when I refer to you and "you guys," I, of course, mean Germans (yeah, I know your American, but you ARE living out in doich land).

  • How do you know Ethelred's American? Is Ethelred's American also known as subgeek? :) (Yeah, the grammar nazi is in da howse)
  • I run down the hall jumping from side to side, seemingly randomly, until I get behind someone, who I follow from 5 inches away, and keep waving my hands until they see me and move to the side.

I also give dirty looks to anyone who walks out of their office without waiting for me to pass.
    • I will share the secret to avoiding those awkward (which is spelled awkwardly, don't you think?) instances where you are heading right towards someone and you both try to avoid each other and end up doing a dance.

The solution is simple: look one way and walk the other. Why does this work? I am not sure, but our feet have a tendency to follow our eyes and our eyes tend to look at the same thing someone else is looking at. So if you look in a direction the person facing you will look towards the same spo

      • Cool, this is like some kind of freakish mind-control thing. By looking to the left, I magically make the person heading towards me move to my left! Personally however I always walk on the right and just shove people out of the way if they are too stupid to walk on the "right" side. Maybe I should get a hat that has an arrow pointing to my left with the words "move right" on it.

Hmm, I wonder if this trick could be used to get people to walk en-mass out into the street, say by first getting their attention (

      • In fact, I'll deliberately get into that situation so that I can try it. I definitely would feel like a ninja.

What about the more awkward situations, where the person you are walking towards recognises you and you recognise them, but neither of you know whether or not you are too far away to actually initiate eye contact or talk so you both sort of raise your eyebrows and end up making funny faces at eac
    • You'd fit right in with the people in my office who never use their TURN SIGNALS when they walk down the hall.

I almost took out about 10 people in Heathrow before I learned that the answer to the question is yes.
    • AHA! I knew it! Sweet... I guess I can die knowing the answer to the greatest question in the WORLD(tm) :-)
    • You mean you survived crossing the streets and always looking left before crossing? ;-)

(Damn, does that always mess me up. Of course, in the heart of London they helpfully have LOOK RIGHT painted on crosswalks for the benefit tourists, but still...)

      Cheers,

      Ethelred

      • Actually the airport was probably a really good warning. I stopped at every street crossing and carefully looked both ways before crossing no matter how confident I was that I was looking the correct way.

Someone (while I was there) told me that was probably wise due to how messed up London's streets were anyway (with a lot of one way streets and all).
  • Here in Australia people generally walk on the left side of the corridor/footpath/what-have-you. And the protocol on escalators/travellators is to keep to the left if you are just going along for the ride, but if you are a weirdo in a hurry and insist on walking when there is a perfectly good machine doing the walking for you already, then you huff and puff your way on the right hand side. It can cause great confusion and bottle-necks if someone stands on the right hand side of an escalator at the train sta
  • Having just got back from 4 nights in Texas, I happen to know the correct term is "Y'all."
  • On a motorcycle, is the cluch hand and/or the shifting peddle on the "other" side?
