Unread: Are we there yet?

If I don't post about Unread, I have a fear of cyrano ripping my face apart with his epee...

I have the requirements down but am completely unsatisfied with them. I'm not the best at requirements gathering, so I'm doing what I feel is best. Making a rough (and I mean rough) prototype of how I want the pages to look. Granted, it doesn't have pics or layout... just what I want on each page and how I want the pages to flow.If I don't post about Unread, I have a fear of cyrano ripping my face apart with his epee...

Once I have this working out well, I'll post it to my website, and be able to pull use cases out for them. From there I can complete my requirements and start coding.

Just keepin yens all informed.

When we can start helping you. There are more than a couple coders in the group and I think we'd all be more than happy to help you out. Have you thought about opening / installing bugzilla for this beast?

Yeah, as soon as you are ready for us FK, I'll ditch those remaining 3 hours of that pesky "sleep time" and help you code. That's what caffeine is for, right?

Spring Framework (1)

I was up last night reading the intro to Spring Framework documentation, and especially this article on "dependency injection" by Martin Fowler [martinfowler.com] which answered the burning question "why the hell would you want to use Spring in the first place?"

So my question is: Spring offers a lot of tools. What do you envision using and why (global picture here, not specifics)?

I have picked up the basics of hibernate and ant thanks to the phun tutorial linked in my journal.

I'm pretty eager to get started on something even if it is a "proof of concept" site (nothing wrong with a small test site, right?)

Are you familiar with Session beans? Spring replaces them. Its for the business logic layer to handle transactions is the short of it.

If you want to do a 'proof of concept' I can hack something together for you to play with this weekend. Just need to get hibernate, spring, struts, and XDoclet working together and in an ant script, then you can plus away with a login page and stuff.

What's wrong with Tapestry? I was reading up on it last night and it Just Makes Sense.

It does, and I truely like the concepts, but I don't have the experience in it to design a whole app in it... plus the URI's it produces are waaay wacky (though I've been told that will be fixed on the next major version).

I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but if I don't try, they'll strip my PiMP cert. :P
Classic Programming Mistakes (
McConnell [pslashg.org] ):
#20 Shortchanged upstream activities. Projects that are in a hurry try to cut out nonessential activities, and since requirements analysis, architecture, and design don't directly produce code, they are easy targets. On one disaster project that I took over, I asked to see the design. The team lead told me, "We didn't have time to do a design."
While you've been messing around with your Fantasy Foosball (just kidding), I've been getting the requirements documentation in order. I'll try to finish it up and get you the draft this weekend. It is already at sixty pages, but I'll try to get it down around thirty.

Cheers and Bob's your Uncle.
