Journal bhtooefr's Journal: Voting Software for a Mock Election 3

I'm looking at setting up a mock election for my school, and am wondering what I should do as for voting software. Supporting approval voting would be a plus, and so would supporting mixed voting types (read: one page of approval, one page of plurality, maybe even a page of IRV or something). Also, running on Windows would be a plus, but is not necessary. Free, especially open source, is almost a must.

Is there such a program that can do all of this, or am I better off whipping something up in Visual Basic, or even tracking down a Florida Vote-O-Matic and a reader?

  • if your school has one of those bubble sheet readers, some of them have interfaces to Computers.
    • My school is muy cheap ;-)

No, they don't have a Scantron reader.

They can only do five candidates, last I checked (then again, when are there going to be more than five? Presidential election is the only case, and in my state, only five made the ballot). Also, how well do they do when there are multiple selections (as in Approval Voting)?

Also, can a Scantron just print a sheet saying what the most popular answer (even if there were multiple answers) to a question is?

      FWIW, could I get a Scantron + cards f
      • Something tells me no. A BubbleScan OMR reader was over $2000.

Granted, if I could get a nice, fast sheet-fed scanner (or flatbed with ADF), and cheap, there ARE software OMR readers that work with TWAIN.

Suggest you just sit there and wait till life gets easier.
