i had my first downmod in ages, and it dropped my karma below 50. apparently somebody thought i was trolling. i had finally had enough of the complaints of "it's not news for nerds/it doesn't matter" when an obituary gets posted, so i went off on a rant on somebody.

my guess is that the parent was modded down (and it was), and somebody saw my post out of context, and moderated it stupidly. either that or somebody thinks that using the word jackass in bold type makes you a troll. hopefully they'll get theirs in M2, though.

  • When you start trolling an article, what do you expect a free ride/? If the moderaters didn't mod you down now who knows what you would have done with an account at the +2 bonus? You deserve it, i hope they mod you down so you can't widen pages or post goatsex links or whatever it is you trolls do when you abuse your karma bonus.

    • WTF are you talking about? i wasn't trolling. that's the bloody point. i've never widened pages, posted goatse links, or anything of the like. my worst slashdot sin was feeding a troll once when i was sleep-depped enough that it seemed funny. and i paid the karmic price for it, too.

      i've had this slashdot account since '98, and i've had the bonus for a while too, but not nearly as long, since i don't generally post all that often. to my knowledge, i've never done anything that would count as abuse of that bonus, although i did have one comment that was modded down as overrated when somebody decided that i didn't deserve the bonus.

        Of course you weren't. Most of the replies on this thread look like people trolling you because they think that you over-reacted to being modded down. You're not the only person who has been modded down as a troll because his posting was misread.

        Thing is, I look at your postings and notice that you very regularly get modded up, so (although this has no effect when your score is at 50) the overall message you're getting is that your postings are very valuable. Nobody else can see that you're at 49 rather than 50 (albeit very briefly) and you still have your +1 mod bonus to use when you want to. Karma points have no intrinsic value.

        If I had been moderating your posting, I would probably not have modded it down, then again I might have because it was a flame that added nothing useful. It didn't look like a troll. There, happy?

        • but it's really inconsequential. i was just bored last night. i've never posted anything remotely close to important in this journal. i have my livejournal for that, so if it actually bugged me, it would have been posted over there. this is just a play area.

          when the guy who started this thread posted, i checked. he didn't seem to be a conventional troll, just a belligerent asshole. i knew what he was doing and i played along. and those other trolls are just funny, in a sort of surreal sense. they can't find something intelligent, so they post about anal sex, assuming that i find the idea repulsive.
