Journal Planesdragon's Journal: Dean elected DNC Chair! 11

And the whole country breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that the only political party that could take on the Republicans has been handed over to someone who showed he knows how to remake a campaign. 2008 starts looking more and more interesting, to say nothing of the mid-term 2006 elections.

w00t!

(Even if you're a Republican, you must recognize the importance of a strong opposition to ensure that no party rules by defalt, but instead retains the will of the people to stay in power.)

Dean elected DNC Chair!

  • I certainly think this is good news for the Democratic party. The idea of toning down our arguments, moving toward the middle, and therefore closer to the republican point of view was frankly distasteful. We now have a dynamic personality who will bring in new ideas to a stodgy old party that hasn't dramatically changed in 30 years. I look forward to seeing how they bootstrap the party from the grassroots level.
    • I'm hoping that this is a sign of a bottom up approach instead of top down. Certainly if the DLC had had yet another choice, Dean wouldn't be at the top. BTW, you do know that Dean is much more centrist than his backers would have you believe, right? I'm not saying he's Joe Lieberman, but he certainly isn't... Oh, wait, I'm having trouble thinking of a true left winger. Well, any Frenchman, anyway.
    • While the democratic party needs to stop relying on the "we're not him" strategy of negatively defining themselves, they also need to avoid being "The Angry Party". Republicans already have that ace sewn up with Fox and their ilk, and more anger isn't going to draw anyone to the DNC. Given Dean's perception (not that I believe it's fair) as "The Angry Guy", it's going to be interesting to see where he takes the party to.
      • We can't back down in the face of angry politics. First off, it makes you appear weak. Conservatives detest weakness. If you display weakness, then you'll never get them to change their argument. Secondly, if you back down, then you appear to lack conviction. The conservatives hate that as well.

I personally like the tit-for-tat strategy. If they stay civil, then you stay civil. If they get angry, then you get angry. It makes you appear strong and full of conviction. And if anyone bitches at you
        • We can't back down in the face of angry politics.

I didn't say back down, I said we cannot counter them with their own weapons, not effectively. There has to be a different response that isn't the pansy-assed crap they've tried so far, but doesn't try to out-angry them either.

you can always say they started it.

THAT always works so well. No wait, it doesn't, it reminds me of a 4 year old.

          • Me: ...you can always say they started it.
You: THAT always works so well. No wait, it doesn't, it reminds me of a 4 year old.

This is politics we're talking about.
            • I like Clinton's "Art of the Possible" quote, whatever else I may think of the man. Having arguments at the level of 4 year olds does nothing to bring anyone closer to what's possible.
  • "*SIGH*"

What's sad is how some Republicans [slashdot.org] seem to long for a one-party state. They don't want there to be a political group with different solutions to the country's problems. They want there to be two camps of Republicans with differences in implementation of *their* solutions i.e. Wingnut Republicans and Moderate Republicans. Th
  • Even if you're a Republican, you must recognize the importance of a strong opposition...

The Donks' selection of The Scream [about.com] is a sign that they don't want the voting public to take them seriously. It's a guarantee of continued Republican dominance for years to come.

I suppose I should be grateful for that. :-)

    • The Donks' selection of The Scream is a sign that they don't want the voting public to take them seriously.

Or that they're going to evaluate themselves based on the truth, and not the media's thin layer of lies.

Kind of like how the Republicans elected a man who can't even speak English. ;)
  • The problem is Dean isn't it. He represents the blog left. The "I Hate Republicans" left. He couldn't get enough votes to be his parties candidate and the person that beat him lost the election. He's popular on the internet, but thats it. A Dean, Reid, Pelosi DNC looks even weaker personality-wise than what was before, AND more fringe politically to boot. Joe Lieberman is 10 seconds away from switching parties. Without W to kick around in 2008, how do you expect them to pull ONE SINGLE VOTE to the de
