Games Announced, Dated, and Delayed 77

The year is finally picking up some steam, with new game announcements, ship dates confirmed, and delays expected. Besides the already announced Zelda delay, Nintendo actually has good news to offer. New Super Mario Bros. is slated for a May 7th release here in the states. Fallout 3 will not be at E3 this year, despite the highly anticipated nature of the game. Oblivion, Bethesda's upcoming RPG, doesn't quite have a release date yet. It should be coming out 'soon', though. NCSoft is apparently working on a dungeon crawler themselves, with the City of Heroes publisher announcing Dungeon Runners at the Taipei game show. For those of you who (like me) loved the title, there are sequels to F.E.A.R. on the way. They won't be carrying the stupid name, thankfully. There will also be a sequel to God of War, slated for release next February. Finally, for classic gaming fans, the GameTap service will be offering the Ultima series of games for play in the near future, probably around the same time that Street Fighter 2 will be on the Xbox 360 Arcade. Looks like we've got a 2006 worth looking forward to. Update: 02/22 20:18 GMT by Z : Changed the God of War information link to Gamasutra; Eurogamer pulled the info after legal threats from Sony.

Games Announced, Dated, and Delayed

  • Didn't the God of War guy just slam sequels less than a week ago?

Woot to even seeing the phrase "Fallout 3" mentioned, even if it won't be at E3.
  • I have been making a habit of buying games that support Linux out of the box. NeverWinter Nights, Unreal Tourney, etc..

Considering how linux-centric this site is, would it be difficult to add the titles that are 'supposed' to work with linux in the summary?

    • "Games Announced, Dated, and Delayed" has nothing to do with what platform they are running on. You'll notice that the only platform listed in the summary is the 360 but that's only to point out that the title (SFII) will be on the XBox Live Arcade. If they didn't mention that, it would look a bit silly since SFII is over 10 years old. Not to sound harsh or anything since I do enjoy not having to reboot just to play a game, but whether or not the game runs Linux is probably best left to another discussio

Duke Nukem Forever is promised to be out shortly after the sun expands into a red giant and destroys the Earth and the entire population of gamers left on it.

That soon??!?? I always thought that the ship date for that game will be right about the time the entire universe is destroyed.
      • Actually, the development of Duke Nukem Forever is going to destroy the universe. When it's finally released, the enthropy backlash from all those carefully hand-crafted bits will result in the heat death of the universe.
    • Meanwhile Duke Nukem Forever is promised to be out shortly after the sun expands into a red giant and destroys the Earth and the entire population of gamers left on it.
Wow, DNF will be one hot title! (groan)

God of War II. Game to include new features: More boobs, more blood, more boobs, more bodies, more boobs. Also, seeing as Kratos has slain basically every mythical creature in The Illiad and The Odyssey, you will now be up agains legions of Nintendogs and Pokemon. Borowing from Don Quixote, you will have to take down the evil windmills and kill random "sorcerers" to cleans the lands. Also, Mario will make an appearence for the GameCube version as Zues, God of Thunder.
    • I was going to suggest that Kratos takes out the Abrahamic Pantheon, with all the saints and prophets and angels and demons and Satan standing between Kratos and God, but I don't want to see my local game shop being burned down by rabid radical fundamentalist dudes.
      • Whatever it is, you can be sure Jaffe will cover it in rusty armor and tribal tattoos... then immediately upon the game's release, he'll lapse into self-loathing.
      • I'd be more concerned about Church Ladie [danacarvey.net]. Besides, Kratos would expire in a fight versus God and Satan. It's like being stuck between two poles. Pure, unbridled evil darkness vs. Pure unbridled good light. He'd be frozen on one side and fried on the other. Besides, biblicaly speaking, those who have sinned cannot see God without being destroyed... Kratos may have a few stikes against him :).

Being a Christian who doens't like the idea of a game in which the whole point is to take on God shouldn't exactl

        • All he needs to do is repent prior to meeting God, and all of his sins will be forgiven.....
          • That only works post-Jesus. Kratos is an ancient greek so he'd have to deal with the old testamentarian God that vaporizes entire cities, orders his followers to exterminate tribes and floods the Earth. At least he didn't destroy all the stars and demand that Jesus roll up some crap to make new stars...
    • Nah, the only enemy he hasn't defeated yet is: time. He'll be whisked away to a modern-day Liberty City, where Kratos must fight rival gangs through dozens of missions in order to rule the underworld. He'll be able to jack cars, slash tires from a distance with his blades, throw opponents for miles, and use any one of a few dozen melee weapons and guns while he evades police.

      I'd buy it.
  • Oblivion, Bethesda's upcoming RPG, doesn't quite have a release date yet.

I recently recieved the following E-mail from Amazon:

We are pleased to report that the following item will ship
    sooner than expected:

"Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Collector's Edition (DVD) [CD-ROM]"
            [DVD-ROM]

The new date listed in the order details is 3/20/2006.

Perhaps it's only the 360 version that doesn't have a date yet...
  • Please don't tell me Cryptic Studios is developing Dragon Runner? That would be so beneath them to create something with such an utterly blatant copy.
    • It said the "City of Heroes publisher", not "City of Heroes developer". You might be able to safely stop worrying, although NCSoft could still probably hire them for it. I would think they're probably busy with City of Heroes and Villains, but I don't know the size of their workforce. Although I do know that they've had Junior Programmer postings on their site for more than a year now. Maybe they're trying to develop some good talent from the ground up.
      • Yeah, noticed it said publisher, but Cryptic Studies isn't a publishing company, so I figured they meant Developer. ;)

Looking over the sites talking about Dragon Runner and I couldn't find any connection to Cryptic Studios; so I have to question why was CoH even mentioned in the first place. The submitter must not be too keen on the seperations of developer vs publisher.
        • Re:Dragon Runner (Score:3, Interesting)

They probably mentioned CoH since NCSoft has published (or planned to publish) a fair amount [playtr.com] of different [cityofheroes.com] MMOs [cityofvillains.com] in recent [guildwars.com] years [autoassault.com], with CoH (arguably) being the most recognizable/successful.
          • Oh, I get what the submitter meant. I got stuck on "with the CoH publisher" (implying a third party). I guess they meant was "as the CoH publisher". Yeah, I'm away of their arsenal of published games and small shack of developed games (Lineage, Lineage II). I see from a translation of the site NCSoft NA will be the developers of this game (well, that explains why it's so similar. ;)).
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online is slated to start this Friday for pre-release purchasers. I found myself missing the NPC-PC collision detection physics in DDO (among other things) after my beta ran out and I returned to my regularly scheduled MMORPG.
  • Considering that Bethesda is finishing up Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, it's no surprise that their next project, Fallout 3, is not going to be at E3. In fact, last time I checked, it was still in pre-production. It is hard to make a demo booth if you don't even have an alpha build.

Might as well pitch this rumor here too.

May 7 is a Sunday. Nintendo doesn't release games on Sundays all that often. One of the more recent big titles they did release on a Sunday was Super Mario 64 DS — as a launch title for the original Nintendo DS.

Draw your own conclusions. I have, and hope to get a DS Lite on May 7.

    • I just finally bought a GBA... but I may have to swallow my pride and man up for a DS. I need my fix of good side-scrolling mario action. I haven't sincerely liked one of them since Mario World.
      • Heh. Definitely at least hold out for the Lite -- it sounds like it's worlds better than the original. Just perhaps more fragile... of course, for Nintendo, fragile means "like any other piece of hardware". My classic DS has parking lot marks on it and still works great. :)

        • World's Better? It looks exactly the same, just lighter.

I just recently got a DS, and my ONLY complaint with the system is its ergonomics. It's like if you put shoulder buttons on an NES controller! After about 5 minutes on MarioKart DS, my right hand starts to fall asleep. This is due to the shape of the controller (completely rectangular), not the size or weight. The size and weight are perfect the way they are, it's no heavier than a GameCube controller or a DualShock 2, and the size seems just fine to

          • Nope, besides being lighter and better-engineered (the lid closes shut firmly rather than smacking up against the main unit like the classic DS), the screen also has four levels of brightness and has, as far as hands-on reports are saying, much better color. Try here for the brightness [n-sider.com] and here for the color. [n-sider.com]. And here for a hands-on [1up.com] in-store. Battery life is also rumored to be better.

I like my classic DS, but there's no denying it was a bit of a rush job from the development model seen at E3 2004 to w

      • Agreed. There really haven't been any "normal" side-scrolling Mario games since Mario World. Although Castlevania has some good titles. Oh, and I hear that there's this small, unknown series called Metroid... supposed to have some good scrollers ;)
    • Thanks for mentioning what was explicitly stated in TFA:

Many people have pointed out that May 7 is a Sunday, but nearly every other Nintendo title is always released on a Tuesday. What gives? Can't help but notice that Sunday is the preferred day for hardware launches, and May 7 -- just before E3 -- might be an opportune time to have the DS Lite take its bow.

Now if only we could get some copies of Animal Crossing to stay on shelves for more than 2 hours, I might finally buy myself a DS!

"The information that previously appeared here has been removed under the threat of legal action from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe."

What's going on? Did anyone get the chance to read it before it was pulled? Can't imagine this pretty obvious news provoking such a threat!

(Oh yeah, and nice one Sony, your PR machine pulls another great move)

There's been a lot of talk about it, but I haven't seen a release date for the DS Lite state side. I know that the Japanese gamers get it in the middle of March, and I believe Reggie said it would hit stateside in the summer (and the original DS would be phased out), but have they stated an actual release date for it?
    • I don't really think it is that big of a deal. to my understanding the DS doesn't use any region encoding so if you want one that badly, buy one from lik-sang when they drop in Japan
  • I can't wait for that new super mario bros game to come out! I'll probably buy a DS specifically for that game. It's great to see a new sidescrolling Mario game come out again; those were the best!

Anyone have any links on information about this game? The only thing I've been able to find are a few old previews from last August.

  • Of course, Galactic Civilizations II [wikipedia.org] is out right now . . . and yes, I work for Stardock, but it's still a great game. ;-)
  • I'm excited that they are carying on the fallout line. I still have Fallout, and Fallout 2, though admitedly i didn't like 2 as much. Both were still great games, hope the 3rd is as good.
  • I don't mind a game getting pushed back by a few months to work out the bugs. What I really hate is the way media is released based on what is 'hot' at the moment. Perhaps it's that they realize the quality is not exactly up to snuff on the majority of what is released.
  • Hey, where is the Duke Nukem Forever?
  • I just want them to hurry up and secure a US release for Mother 3! I'd rather not have to play a fan-sub ROM two years later, though I will if I have to!
