ScoopFlash writes to tell us that TechEBlog has assembled what they consider to be some of the strangest computer mice ever put to market, complete with pictures. I just hope I don't need to answer the phone in the middle of an important instance.

    We have finaly found some mices which are worse than Apple mighty mouse. Good job!
    • Here HERE! i'm using mighty mice at work for the excellent X&Y scroll ball, but am daily amazed at the complete and utter madness of form over function in this instance.

      1. Left click: to achieve a left click, simply push your index finger down.
      2. Right click: this one is a little trickier... first lift your index finger so that no part of it is touching the mouse. Then push your middle finger down.

      This feature is apparently because when the engineer showed jobs the first design with independent buttons,
      • Worse.. try using it in your left hand. While the mouse *looks* like it can be used in the left-hand, don't be fooled. The brilliant space-age design of this mouse prevents it from functioning properly in a left hand.
    • I've never used a mighty mouse but I find it hard to believe that that one is even worse than the circular mouse that came with the first iMac. I've got one of those. In a box under my bed somewhere. Not only will it give you RSI after about 3 seconds, you never know which way it points when you grab it, and it has the infamous one button Apple loves and the rest of the world hates. How can a mighty mouse beat that when badness is the deciding factor?

      any geek worth their salt can type one-handed just through practice. I mean, I can. because. you know. sometimes you need to.

    • I made something similar to the powerglove thing for an embedded systems design class recently.

      We had an 'enable' button on the glove so that the cursor only moved when it was being held. Ours worked by detecting gravitation acceleration (tilt) as opposed to a gyroscope, but it was still pretty damn cool, and much more 'homebrew' than simply pulling apart a gyration mouse and hacking it onto a powerglove.

    Designer Mice Made to Order is about genetically engineered mice, not computer input devices.

    Okay, the cursor shaped mouse is just stupid, as is the one with the keypad where you rest your palm. The only one of those that I'd even consider using is the skype phone, but for the reason the OP said even that one's not good.

    The powerglove picture didn't load, so I don't know exactly how that one works, but I can guess. Yikes.

    I got a laugh out of the "Related Story" link, to the designer mouse... it's about flesh and blood mice, instead of computer mice... Whoops. (:
  • I know this list is for mice that already exist, but I'd really like a mouse with a track-ball instead of a scroll wheel (probably sat on the left hand side where my thumb rests), it would be brilliant for navgating large Excel spreadsheets etc, and maybe even during games, I got excited when I saw the "designer mice made to order" link, until I realised it wasn't about computer mice. I'm sure if such a mouse existed it would be a contender for the list, but if anyone knows of such a mouse I'd like to hear

      There are mice out there with trackball-like devices instead of a scroll wheel. The Apple Mighy Mouse among others does that, although all mice I've seen have placed the scroll-ball where the scroll wheel typically is.

      Personally, I like two-finger scrolling on my Powerbook's trackpad. :-)

  • The ergonomics - they do nothing! Many of those mice make my fingers cringe preemptively.
  • So, a lot of these are actually really strange: the helmet, the giant arrow, etc... but the winner being a foot mouse? There's nothing strange at all about a foot mouse, have the authors completely forgotten that not everyone has arms or has control of their arms? I know the article is supposed to be humorous, but when I see a foot mouse I don't think, "haha what the hell?!" I think, "ugh... that's kinda depressing."
    • Perhaps "unusual" would have been a better choice of words.

      As soon as I saw the footmouse I looked to order one for my aunt. She has cerebral palsy, and has had very poor control of her hands and arms since birth. For the past 10 years she's been using a trackball with her feet, but she has to replace it annually because it gets so crud-filled. Yes, it's unpleasant to contemplate, but she has to do something that works for her.

    As you roll your desk chair around, the cursor moves likewise.

    Now if I can only think of a way to keep it from clicking everytime I sit down.
    • I've thought along similar lines, except that you install a trackball in the armrest of the chair which you roll with your elbow while keeping your fingers on the keyboard. Clicking can be done at the keyboard similar to the trackpad mouse buttons on laptops.
  • I loved the zursor mouse. That is something that MS should have invented: a cursor-shaped thing to move your cursor! Wicked. Almost as shocking as the powerglove mouse.
